I was looking for a budget laptop that would do the basics without frills. I had heard stories about the build quality, but decided to take a chance and was not disappointed. I bought an external USB CD/DVD as it does not have one due to its compact size. The hard disk is not huge, but unless used to store many image or music files, should suffice. It has a good amount of RAM and (to me at least) seems to manage windows 7 with ease. Boot up times are acceptable and once up and running, the screen size and keyboard are more than usable. Pound for pound, the specifications are good and the processing power more than adequate. As advertised, the sound is very good. Although this was not a consideration when purchasing, I enjoy listening to the radio on it when working.
I don't understand why people go for tablets -this is a much more capable option at a great price.
Here is a summary of its specifications
1. Weight only 1.8 Kg
2. 4GB Ram
3. 320 GB hard disk
4. Windows 7 Home Premium
5. 2.3 GHz Celeron processor
6. Dimensions 24.1 x 34.4 x 2.6 cm
In summary, it is hard to fault. I have heard people say that the Asus after sales service is not the best, but the build quality seems good and it is likely you are not going to need it.
The lack of a CD/ DVD drive is a compromise for it's size. With so much being downloaded directly nowadays from the internet, this is not much of a problem, but an external drive is not expensive if you really need to use disks.
This little beast is absolutely amazing!I bought was looking for a laptop/net-book for syncing my ipod to itunes playing minecraft and a little bit of college work, apart from that i wasn't really expecting that much much more out of it, but i've managed to get a few more games running on mine like team fortress 2, counter strike and garry's mod, they may not be the most demanding of games but you'll have difficulty finding another machine that falls into the netbook category that is capable of playing them.obviously this means the the asus x401a-wx074v is good at multitasking and running some of the harder to run programs that would kill a normal netbook that you would prbabably pay about the same for.I've only had mine about two weeks but I havn't had any problems with it so far.
I'm not very technically minded so when our laptop died I had no idea what I was looking for. I went online and found a great deal on the Asus X401A WX074V so I ordered it straight away and it was delivered the next day. We paid £340 including delivery.
When we opened the box up the laptop came with a charger and all the relevant instruction manuals. The laptop itself has a 14inch screen and a 4 GB ram and comes with windows 7 home premium. It is light weight and fairly slim. The only problem is that it does not have a DVD reader, but it does have a 2 in 1 memory card reader.
The windows 7 takes a bit of getting used to but once you have the hang of it it becomes easier. We have had one slight problem with it, which is that when we are using the internet all of a sudden it will loose connection to the wifi and takes a long while to come back. We thought it was our wifi box, as it is getting old, but other laptops in the house weren't loosing connection and it has done it when using other people's wifi, so we think it is the laptop. It isn't really a big deal as the connection does come back after a while but it can just be really annoying. This might just be a fault in our laptop but when I googled the problem to see if there was anything we could do there was quite a few other people that have had the same problem.
Overall for the money we paid for it it is a great laptop. It is easy to use and easy to carry around. If you are looking for something cheap and basic I would really recommend this laptop.
This 14" laptop comes with 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, Intel Pentium B970 / 2.3 GHz and original Windows 7 Home Premium in the 64-bit version. It has no DVD reader, only a 2 in 1 Memory Card reader. The dimensions of the laptop are 34.4 cm x 24.1 cm x 2.65 cm, it weighs 1.85 kgs and has a 6-cell battery.
The price usually includes a charger and mine had a mouse and a laptop bag too.
I have been using the Asus X401A WX074V for quite some time and overall I am satisfied with it, for this price I couldn't expect anything more from a laptop. The screen is perfect for me since I am not using any programs or games which require bigger resolution and watching movies on it is surprisingly pleasant. The battery life is really long for me, though I usually use it with low energy settings, once I had gone for 10 hours before recharging it so if battery life is important for you, this laptop is great.
The Laptop starts up quite quickly and the Windows 7 is working perfectly, never had a problem with it and the whole interface looks great. The installation was really easy since the operating system was already installed mostly and I just had to register and set up a few things. The webcam is standard and a bit slow but the quality of the speakers and the high volume level is impressive, it is definitely a pleasant surprise.
In the first few months the laptop worked perfectly. I had many tabs and programs open at the same time (I am kind of a multitasker) and it ran pretty smoothly, however by now it can't really cope with more than 3 programs at the same time. And sometimes, if I have the browser open while watching HQ movies, the player starts lagging which can be resolved by closing and then opening it but it is definitely not too pleasant during a gripping scene of the movie. I tried computer cleaning programs, uninstalling all the programs I rarely used, deleted most of my media to free up some space but it didn't really help.
This is my first laptop, I had a PC before so I don't have a lot of experience with it but from what I have heard from others, laptops tend to get slower in time so I guess this is just how it goes with everyone.
I faced the most annoying "mistake" of this product (though it is partly my own silliness that I didn't think about it thoroghly) when I tried to solve the slowness by wanting to reinstall the whole operating system: it has no DVD reader. I knew it when I bought it (and I even got the DVD for Windows 7) but I never thought that it would be a problem since I have never had many DVDs or games and, and to be honest, it is absolutely possible to live without it, it is still annoying, since an external DVD player is not cheap and carrying one with you everyhere when you need it is not the best option. I believe not thinking of this is my fault mainly so I won't take it into consideration when rating the product but I thought people should know that it might be a problem that they don't really expect.
I mostly use my laptop for surfing the internet, writing essays, studying, watching movies and for a few months I even played World of Warcraft on it, though it did not run without some glitches and lagging, it was ok.
Other than automatic restartfor Windows updates (I really hate it, it only asks you 15 minutes before the restart and it doesn't pop up, only runs in the background and you can easily miss it and be annoyed when the laptop randomly restarts) I have never had any problem with the laptop crashing or turning off randomly so it is really safe to write on it since it is highly unlikely that you can lose your data because of a sudden blue death.
This machine is great if you are looking for something to use for school or just for fun but don't expect miracles from it. It is cheap and really worth the price, though next time I might look for something from a higher category, but I can definitely recommend it for casual use for everyone.
Exclusive ASUS sound enhancement turns the X series into highly capable multimedia notebooks, with the best sound in their class: more power, wider range, and improved clarity combine to offer a more satisfying multimedia experience.
