      Ideal for a student

When my trusty Compaq laptop finally died after five and a half years' loyal service, I was dreadfully disappointed but managed to pull myself together and start searching for a replacement. After searching in several places and having several telephone consultations with my dad (who knows far more about these things than I do), I settled on the Acer. My primary consideration was price, and at under £400 this laptop was less than half the price of my previous laptop. Acer has a good reputation, or so I'm told, and this was another important factor. When I received the laptop I was very impressed with how it looked. To be honest I really wanted a purple laptop from Dell, but couldn't justify the extra price. However, the black surface is smart, smooth and sleek, and the greyish-white keyboard and screen area looks a lot nicer than you might think. It is a lot lighter than my previous laptop too, despite being a couple of inches wider - this is very handy when you're going home on the train and need to take it with you. This laptop comes with Windows Vista Home Premium. I have heard mixed reviews about Vista, and would rather have gone for a laptop with XP, but now that I've been using the computer for a few months I really feel that Vista is an improvement in every way but appearance - I preferred the way that XP looked, and the way files and folders (especially music folders) appeared with XP but I accept this is just a personal preference. While at home, for example, I was able to connect to my brother's Vista laptop (shared files and music) using our home wireless network very easily - when I tried to do the same thing using our family's desktop computer with XP I just couldn't work out how. The laptop has built-in wireless capability, which I understand is pretty standard these days but after using an annoying USB-connected dongle with my old laptop I'm enjoying the novelty. The laptop has four USB 2.0 ports, which is great for connecting your camera, mp3 player, mouse etc., and a great improvement on my previous laptop which only had two. The Dolby surround sound is great for watching movies, and you can adjust the sound for when you're listening to music. A webcam is built into the computer, which I must confess I don't use, but it's a nice touch if you want to be able to see the person you are speaking to on Messenger. The only downside is the graphics card - I don't know anything about computer graphics but even I can tell that these aren't so great. However, I think this would only be a problem if you are a serious gamer, which I certainly am not. Overall, this is a great budget laptop if you use your computer for browsing the internet, writing letters and other documents, storing photos and music as well as watching films or listening to music. It would be ideal for a student who didn't want to take loads of CDs or a DVD player away to uni with them. The hard disk is massive so most people would be able to fit their entire music collection on here, plus their digital photos. On the basis of my experience with this laptop, Acer definitely deserve their good reputation.

The 5920G is better and the same price...

Well, what can you say abou the Aspire 5920? Well, we could talk about its Core 2 Duo processor, which is speedy as hell. We could talk about its 250Gb HDD for all your music, programs, pictures and so on. We couldnt talk about the 2Gb memory, which allows Vista to perform at an optimum performance. Or we could talk anout the Doly Home Theatre Sound technology the Laptop has. Maybe the CristalBrite LCD Display, Widescreen. The really thing to talk about, though, is the Graphics card and the DVD Drive. No Call of Duty for this little Baby, because Intel cant make a decent Graphics Card for the life of them. No Far Cry, nothing. Dont expect to play anything but the basics. GTA Vice City, Football Manager 2009 play fine. The DVD Drive, which some websites advertise as being Blu-Ray... well... isnt. Its a basic Dual Layer DVD Drive which is specified as a Multi-Recorder. So, now my gripes are out of the way, what is good about it? Well, its great. Its fast, looks sleek, and is made by the best Laptop specialist in the world - Acer. But, its for the basic user. Possibly a reliable business computer. But if its gaming you want, at the same price as this, then the 5920G is a better alternative. With an nVidia Graphics card, that makes the 5920G a better spec'd Lappy than this already. Not sure about the DVD Drive on that, but its certainly worth looking at the 5920G before committing to this one. And its always better to enquire about the specs before buying... something I know now, and wish I had done before buying this one. I want some gaming, and this doesnt offer that. Also, I recommend Windows XP. Vista takes up memory!

      4/5

i managed to snap one of these up online for £399.99 i added an extra 1gb RAM stick to up it up to 3gb. Speed. it features the Core 2 Duo T7300 processor at 2ghz with a very nice 800 Mhz FSB, i tried several things to determine how fast it can perform with several things opening, i fired up windows media player and Age of empires both at the same time, they loaded quite slow and i wasnt sure why but i then found out from reading the manual that there are 3 different performance settings that can be enabled on the power options which are Balanced, Power Saver and High Performance so obviously i kicked it to high and loading was about 5x faster but noticably the battery life drops incredibley low. ill give it 4/5 for speed. Graphics. My version features 358mb Mobile Intel Graphic Media Accelerator X3100, its very basic and cant run any fancy games like Bioschock or Oblivion but it does do well on Age Of Empires or old FPS' like Delta Force, for anyone who enjoys picture editing running Photoshop can cause problems, i read that for applictions such as photo or video editing a good graphics card is essential but i always thought it was just about speed for those but it turns out you will need something alot more basic, the programme does tend to freeze and lags when inserting text or adding brushes and once you get more in depth on the picture it will respond very slowly even on High Performance. Sound. It features an in built subwoofer which performs well on high bass music but when listening to lyrics from the laptop itself with no output speakers it does have that tinny effect and the sub bass does drown out the lyrics. Extra Features. Nice little extras include the inibuilt webcam which has a good resolution but you cant adjust the angle without adjusting the screen as its fixed, the added WLAN is standard in todays laptops but not all of them feature a/b/g/n frequencys and is handy for larger homes. The dvd-rw does what it says on the tin. the LCD display seems clear and bright with acer's CrystalBrite technology but i dont have another laptop to compare it to to notice any differences. The Look This is what attracted me the most, the glossy black top lid with a silver Acer logo built in the middle and primarily all blue lit from the inside, the keyboard is a nice white but after a while will obviously become dirty but nothing a damp cloth wont fix. Overall Im very impressed for what i got for 399. its fast for what i need and nothing has failed on me yet, the only downside is the chunkyness i would say roughly 6-8cms when closed and it does have a bit of weight to it.

        A good budget desktop replacement

Purchased through 'Amazon Warehouse' was described as 'slight cosmetic blemishes' when recieved there was nothing of the sort. Laptop was in pristine condition. Excellent value for money, but make sure that the model you purchase has the GeForce graphics chipset to make it more usuable in a modern gaming context. Whilst this laptop is quite large and is not great for someone on the move it is quite light for the size. I would consider this if you are looking for a desktop replacement rather than something inherently portable. One of the USB connecters now seems to be faulty, however as there is 2 others this is not much of an issue. Comes with HDDVD drive which functions perfectly well as a standard DVD/RW drive. Screen can get very dark when not plugged in and the battery life is nothing to write home about but the abundance of features and with some tweaking, performance make this a good buy for someone on a budget.

Would Recommed to anyone who doesnt mind an ugly laptop

DESIGN This is an ugly fugly laptop, I'm serious! When you first see a laptop, what do you see? The answer the laptop itself and you better hope that this one was closed because on the exterior it looks like an average laptop with an average glossy screenback but when you open it it up all you see is beige beige beige. Its rather off(white). As I manage a chain of computer superstores I can pretty much review any laptop that takes my fancy and after spending half a day on this one I can get a pretty good Idea on it and peoples opinions. Everyone I asked instore said that if they were to purchase a laptop on looks alone they wouldn't buy this one. Did I mention the size of this laptop? Its rather big if your wondering which adds to the ugliness. It also wont appeal as portable. Another thing which I find hilarious about this laptops design is its dummy button. If you ever have had a car which doesnt have all the extras you will find a few blank buttons. Yes this has one too. Enough about the looks though and I apologize to anyone who likes this laptops appearence and dummy button. PERFORMANCE This laptop is designed as an entertainment PC and it is one of the first to feature the Santa Rosa chipset from intel. For those not in the business that is the processer and it is the 4th version of the Intel Centrino processers. By buying a laptop with Santo Rosa means your getting a bit more than a flash processer, oh yes. By buying this laptop you will get the newer form of wireless internet (N) and a Windows Vista Ready graphics card ( although I strongly recommend against windows Vista as it isnt very good) This is also a Dual Core processer meaning alot faster management of applications. We didnt test the battery but I'm told it can do 130mins during ordinary day-to-day tasks. GRAPHICS I tried playing a few games on the Acer and I was pleasantly suprised. Although the speed wasnt a fast as on really high end machines the graphics speed was acceptable and would run most games without problems. MEDIA The Acer is a media PC and it has a great screen, although it is a little to glossy. The screen is 15.4Inches standard for a laptop of this caliber. The sound quality is very high due to the fact Acer included Dolby Surround in this laptop. Something which I havent seen before. This laptop is perfect for DVD's EXTRAS Like mentioned earlier the Acer is fitted with superfast wireless with the inclusion of 802.11n. It also has bluetooth, a card reader and a camera. CONCLUSION Although really ugly and not too portable the Acer 5920 has some great features for a good price. I would probably reccommend this PC as it has some great media applications and is designed with everything in mind.
