In the summer, my local Budgens often has mangoes on special offer. My whole family loves mangoes, but I was reluctant to buy them, or once bought would procrastinate over preparing them, because they are difficult to cut up. So, naturally, when the same shop had this little gadget for £1.50 each, I had to give it a go. To use the gadget, you hold it at the end of your mango, so the oval is the same orientation as the mango. It sounds complicated - and I had never realised that mangoes weren't spherical! However, despite my misgivings, my first mango was perfectly stoned, and so has every mango I've bought since. The fruit really is shaped like the stoner, making it super easy to use. Once you've lined up your cutter, you just gently push it down through the fruit, and are left with three bits - two outers, with the flesh and no stone, and one stone with a couple of small pieces of flesh on the ends. Those are cooks perks, at least in my house. The other parts can be removed from the skin by simply running a sharp knife between flesh and skin (I use a grapefruit knife) or by scoring into cubes and pushing upwards, which is very decorative for parties. Then you pop it in the dishwasher and it's sparkling for the next time. All in all, extremely easy to use, easy to clean, and we're eating a lot more mangoes.
I love mangoes and buy them every week, but as you probably know they aren't the cheapest things in the world and they aren't the easiest things to cut up thanks to the ridiculously slippery flesh and the huge stone in the middle. I muddled through though and have the cuts and (strangely enough) bruises to show for it, that is, until the mango splitter came into my kitchen. I've had a few OXO products before and they are all gimmicky type things that serve one purpose only but they are quite handy for what they do and this is the case with the mango splitter too. It is really easy to use; you just put the mango stem side down and place the splitter on top and then push down. It is much easier to use than things like apple corers, mainly because the fruit is softer. This has an added advantage that the blades don't have to be overly sharp, in turn making it safer to use. The handles of the device are coated with a soft rubbery material which serves two purposes - firstly it makes it much more comfortable to hold, even when you apply a bit more force. Secondly, it gives you a bit more of a firmer grip when your hands are slippy from the flesh of the fruit. I sometimes cut a tiny bit off the bottom of the fruit (the bit where the stem is) so that it stands flatter on the cutting surface. You don't have to do this, it works with or without doing it, but I find that it makes it a bit easier for me. The splitter cost me about £6 from a local cooking equipment shop. It is available on amazon for under £5. It may seem quite pricy for a gimmick, but I think it is completely worth it because it makes life so much easier. You'd make your money back in no time anyway thanks to the amount of fruit that you stop wasting by cutting it using the splitter rather than doing it by hand. You do get a lot more fruit from the mango by using this - it is great. Cleaning it is equally easy because the gaps between the blades are big enough that you can get a washing up sponge through them easily. It has lasted well too. It gets used every week and still looks as good as new even though I have had it for a few years now. Overall I would absolutely recommend the OXO mango splitter because it is easy to use and such a great gadget to have.
I love Mangoes and so do my little girl and boy but they are so hard to prepare that it sometimes used to put me off. They have a rounded shape to them and so peeling was often very hard as was trying to get to the stone in the middle of the mango. I found that the fruit around the stone is also quite tough even if the rest of the flesh is quite soft in the rest of the mango so I always ended up chopping off lots of good fruits just to get a couple of slices out of one mango, not good as these are quite an expensive fruit too. With the OXO mango splitter all that changed. This is such an ingenious tool and one that makes cutting up mangoes really quick and easy with minimal fruit loss. The OXO good grips mango splitter is much like a cookie cutter in a way. It is round in shape and has a blades in the middle of it that goes from one side to the other. THe centre of the blade forms a sort of oval/tear drop shape. The blades are quite sharp and made of stainless steel and I think they need to be as the skin on this fruit is quite tough and needs something quite sturdy cutting into out. The outer ring of this splitter has gripped handles so it makes holding onto it really easy and you don't hurt your hands in any way pressing down and plus the gripped effect makes it very easy to hold onto this cutter easily and means it will not slip when you are cutting. To use you basically just stand up the mango if you can, I always look for mangoes in the shop that I know this tool will find easy, then make sure the little oval shape is over the stem of the mango at the top of it and press down. The cutter will slice through leaving you with a section in the middle where you find the stone and two bits either side ready for you to eat. It will not take the outer skin out but you can either eat this with a grapefruit spoon which I find helpful to cut through the flesh or slice the mango off the skin with a knife and then eat it. I purchased mine from Amazon for less than £5 if I remember right and its a really easy way to stone a mango and a kitchen tool I recommend.
OXO Good Grips Mango Splitter is an ingenious device which allows you to neatly, carefully and expertly split a mango and be able to remove the hard nut in the middle without any effort at all. It cost just under six pounds and we bought it online about a year ago. It saves a lot of money if you enjoy mango but do not like to prpeare a fresh one yourself and therefore are tempted to buy the pre-sliced packets, which can cost a fortune. Our little lad loves fresh mango and we all eat a lot of it as a family but it can be a real pain preparing the fruit and my other half usually leaves it to me. This gadget is like using an apple slicer and it is so easy to use and requires hardly any effort. al you do is put your mango onto this gadget and place the splitter at the top of the mango, and gently push down the fruit. If the mago is not very ripe then you will have to put in more effort and push down a bit harder. The blades are sharp so be careful. What I personally love about this great gadget is that there is absoulutely no wastage of mango flesh like there is if you try to do it yourself. I have to say, personally speaking, there is very very little flesh left on the stone afterwards, especially if the fruit is at the correct ripeness. It is easy to keep clean - just rinse under hot water and you will find that no debris stays on the blades as it just rinses off as it is quite a clean fruit to use. Or, if you want to, then you can pop it into the dishwasher with your other stuff and it will come out looking great. It is possibly a bit expensive but if you work out how much you could spend on pre-sliced mangoes then it is worth it. This review is also published on Ciao under name of sorehead.
I love mango, absolutely love it. What I definitely don't love however is peeling and chopping the bloody things as even if I don't lose a finger trying to slice the flesh from around the stone, I'll definitely lose cash as I waste aforementioned flesh when I realise I actually have no chance of getting it all off. So around five years ago I wasn't particularly surprised to find an Oxo Good Grips Mango Splitter in my Christmas stocking, as my family aren't known for their exciting choice of present - if my mum notices a need for something she'll buy it (however mundane) for them. It's actually turned out well, the same Mango Splitter being in regular use and showing hardly any signs of its relative old age. I know some people will be looking at my review and wondering what the hell a Mango Splitter is, so I'll explain. It won't take long. You basically get your mango and stand it stem-end down on a plate, position the Splitter over it and then push down until it slides through the mango. When the Splitter has done it's work you'll be left with two fleshy 'cheeks' of mango and the large stone. Eat the mango, wash the Splitter and your work is done. It's so easy to use. The two handles which jut out have a rubbery 'sleeve' which makes the Splitter comfortable to hold and also prevents the risk of your hands slipping once they have become coated in sticky, slippery mango juice. The metal part isn't really sharp so you have to use a bit of force to get the Splitter through the first stage which is when you are breaking the skin at the top of the mango, however once you're through that you'll find the blade will slide very easily through the soft flesh. The stone will still hold a little mango flesh but nowhere near as much as when I attempt to hack into one using a knife - and anyway, providing I'm on my own I'll then happily suck the rest of the flesh and juice from the stone and sod the sticky face afterwards! Washing the Mango Splitter is a piece of cake; a quick swish and wipe in hot soapy water will remove all traces of this very sticky fruit - although do take care with the inside edge of white plastic as I find if this isn't cleaned scrupulously you'll be in for a sticky and tacky time next time you come to use it. It's dishwasher safe up to a certain temperature, although as I don't have a dishwasher I can't comment on the effectiveness of this. I'm completely happy with this low-tech kitchen gadget, the plastic is looking a bit discoloured now but that's to be expected from a five year old item which is used at least on a twice-weekly basis. Not only does it make life easier but over the years it has actually saved me money - I'm sure fellow mango lovers will relate when I say that before owning this I've actually thrown away over ripe mangoes simply because I couldn't be bothered hacking away and by the time I *can* be bothered the mango has gone rotten. This no longer happens and I can hand over my £1.49 (which is a disgusting price for a single fruit, but that's a whole other review!) safe in the knowledge that preparing and eating the thing will not be the drama that it used to be. £6.50 (ish) from anywhere that sells the Good Grips range.
The product This is a 'good grips' mango splitter. It is basically a small device that is used to de-stone a mango with ease. How to use This really is very simple. Take your mango (not over ripe), place it stem side down, line up the splitter so it is sitting on the top of the mango. The oval shaped blade in the middle of the plastic circle (with black handles) should be in the middle of the mango. Then you just simply press down and this will literally slide through the mango. It's very simple and will you may need a little bit of force initially once it slides through the mango it is incredibly easy. Once this has slide down to the bottom of the mango you will have three parts. There will be two almost half moon shaped mango pieces and then there will be the seed left with, hopefully, minimal flesh around it. Where can I buy this & for how much? This can be purchased from Amazon.co.uk for £6.35 (August 2011) with free super saver delivery. This appears to be available from John Lewis & Lakeland stores for £6.95 if you prefer picking it up in store. Overall opinion This is a fantastic little gadget! Before I purchased this I was spending a few pounds every week on a little tub of sliced, cubed mango. Now I am able to purchase them when they are on special offer, ripen at home and enjoy them whenever I want to with very minimal effort. The price for this was reasonable, it is not the cheapest kitchen gadget but I thoroughly know and trust the OXO Good Grips name as I have been using their products for a couple of years now and so far I have never found a bad one that does not live up to their claims! This mango splitter does cause a little bit of mess when it is used and I still have to peel the fruit away from the skin but it takes all the hard work out of the worst part of enjoying a home prepared mango. This cuts down on the time it takes to prepare a mango and the chance that I am going to slip with a knife and cut myself. This is reassuringly simple to use compared to slicing my mango myself and it is dishwasher safe also so can just be thrown in the dishwasher after use. The black silicone style handles on this make it very simple to hold and I don't have to worry about it slipping when I am using it.
