Anthony Horowitz is probably best known for his series of Alex Rider books for the older children and his Stormbreaker book was recently made into a film. This book is very different to this, as the author retells over 30 myths and legends mainly from Greek mythology but also from Roman, English, Norse and other cultures. Characters that you will meet include well known ones such as Achilles, the Sphinx, the Gorgon and Narcissus and also ones that were new to me such as Geriguiaguiatugo, from a Bororo Indian tale. My son (aged 11) got this as a prize for doing well at Classics at school and we are reading it together at bedtime. I must admit that it is great fun (it is much better reading to him now that I can start enjoying the books as well - see the reviews of the Percy Jackson books). The stories, as far as I can tell, stay close to the original myth or legend, but make them easier to read and understand. They are mainly quite short, so you don't lose interest before each one ends. It was fun to read what Mr Horowitz decided came out of Pandora's Box, including graffiti, advertising, muzak and other modern day hates. Well worth looking into as both a fun and educational book.
