This was yet another book that was handed down to my daughter from her older nieces. She has done ever so well out of her well-read cousins!
This small book features the ever-popular Maisy Mouse, who helps us count up to ten. You can currently buy a version on amazon for around a fiver, which comes complete with numbered blocks, so quite a good deal.
This is an incredibly simple book. Each page features Maisy Mouse and a number from one to ten, and that number of a certain item on the page. So on the first page, Maisy has one ladybird on her nose, and the second page she is inside a house with two flowers, and so on. Each page has something different to count and when my little girl was just learning to count, she really enjoyed counting up the objects. At the very end of the book is a full list of numbers from one to ten, with rows of flowers to count.
This is such a simple idea that I do think it encourages counting in a basic way that is good for young children. My daughter has grown out of this now, but she really did like it when she was just starting with her numbers, and the simple, colourful pictures were very appealing to her. However I must confess that I don't really like the pictures - as with all Maisy books they are scruffily drawn and very basic - but I don't find them particularly nice to look at! Having said this, it is a great book for educational purposes and my daughter enjoyed looking at this and counting along with Maisy which is the main thing I guess! So I will give it four stars.
If you have a little Maisy fan at home who is learning his or her numbers then I would definitely recommend this book - especially if you can get the version with the blocks as I think this would be lots of fun.
