When my husband's niece slipped and fell in her bathtub while taking a shower and broke her clavicle, I thought it would be a good idea to buy a bathtub mat. I couldn't find a white one in our town, so I bought one online. Our bathtub is white inside, the mat which came was off-white. It didn't look bad in itself but somewhat dirty and ugly lying in the white bathtub. I'm mentioning this here so that you can watch out when buying a white mat and avoid disappointment. I endured the off-white one for some time but then decided to splash out and buy a new one even before the old one had reached its end.
I searched on the net for a clear white mat, looked at photos with a magnifying glass and found the 'Papillon Bathtubmat' at last. It comes from the firm IFC Papillon Oosterhout which sounded Dutch to me. Indeed, it is. It's a Dutch firm dedicated to provide 'bathroom pleasure' by producing excellent bathmats, shower curtains and safety mats. The choice is enormous as you can see on their homepage (www.ifc-papillon.nl). The mat I bought was made in Italy, though. Surprising when now nearly everything comes from Asia.
It measures 75.5 x 35 cm. It comes in the colours white, light blue, light green and pink. You lay it in the bathtub and press it firmly onto the bottom so that the more than 100 small suckers underneath cling to it and you don't slip when standing on it. A special feature of the Papillon bathtub mat are the over 900 soft massage knobs on its upper side. Taking a shower you massage the soles of your feet at the same time. The mat has an open structure, that means it looks like a grid, the knobs are at the points where the horizontal and the vertical stripes cross. It's made of 100% Polyvinyl. It's easy to clean, you can put it in the washing machine.
After using it I don't leave it lying in the bathtub - a mistake I made with the mat I had before. It became kind of mouldy underneath with time. I roll the new one tight and stick it behind the hand rail on the wall.
The instruction leaflet mentions that the 'Papillon Bathtubmat' is sold in seven countries, from Spain to Russia. Amazing! Amazon sell it for 6.50 GBP.
