My daughters had had the same old beach towels since as long as I can remember and they were definitely a bit shabby and on the small side for my six and eight year olds. As we were going to California last July, I decided that it was about time to get some new ones. Therefore I took a look on Amazon, not even quite sure what type of towels I was looking for.
The girls had previously had towels that went over their heads and had hoods. I couldn't qite find any like this that were suitable but I did spot poncho type towels that have a hole in the middle for their heads to fit through. There were three other reasons that I chose these towels as well and these are reasons that are likely to appeal to many young girls. The first reason is that they are pink! Now I don't mean any ordinary pink but a very bright pink. Not only would my girls love the colour, but being so bright, they would be likely to be easily spotted on a crowded beach or in a crowded pool. The second reason is that these towels are Barbie towels and my daughters love anything to do with their favourite dolls. The third reason was a bit special to s as on the towel in big letters it says 'California Girl' - just right for our holiday to the West Coast!
The towel measures 75 x 150 cm which is a very good size for my two girls. They tend to walk around in them and the towel comes down to about their knees. The towel feels that it is very good quality. The outer side with the pattern on is soft and fine and then the inner side, which goes next to the skin, is plain and that side is highly absorbent. The towel is made from 100% cotton too.
I had not told my daughters I was getting them new towels so it was a surprise when they saw them and they were highly delighted. They absolutely loved the design which I somehow knew they would. The towels did come rolled up in a plastic drawstring pouch but, as it was a bit fiddly, trying to role it up and put it in each time, this was soon discarded.
The girls wore the towels a lot on our holiday and they did a fantastic job of drying their skin after swimming and for keeping them warm when playing out of the water - particularly in Monterey where it was very chilly. They also looked quite cute wearing them and they got many admiring looks. They have also used them virtually every week since then at their weekly swimming lessons so they have had a lot of use which also means that they have had a great deal of washing! So how do these towels fare after being washed at 30 degrees each week. I am actually very impressed at how well they have kept their colour. They are pretty much the same vibrant pink colour as the day that I bought them. The softness is also pretty good although I would have to say that they are probably not quite as fluffy as they were. Overall, they are lasting pretty well with constant use and I can't think that I will be replacing them for a while yet.
The towels can be bought through Amazon for £5.95 each (February 2012) but as it is an amazon seller I did have to pay delivery costs of £2.95. Even so, I still think that this is pretty good value and I would definitely recommend these practical and attractive towels.
