This airport Travelodge has only opened relatively recently and so we've only just had chance to sample the delights it offers. Even though Sheffield isn't far away from EMA, the wife and I still prefer to stay in a hotel the night before a flight - it extends our holiday for another day and for just £19 per room, it really is good value.
This particular Travelodge is located at the M1 motorway services at junction 24 around a mile or so away from the airport. The hotel is built on top of the services, but noise wasn't a problem at all when we were there (despite what we'd read online beforehand - perhaps we just had quiet room or were lucky to pick a quiet night?). We didn't see a restaurant or bar, but I presume you can just get a bite to eat/drink from the services below... although expect to be changed an arm and a leg for that!
The room was a pretty standard Travelodge affair with a nice large double bed and good-sized en suite bathroom. It's one of the newer Travelodges and so was nice and clean inside with relatively new equipment.
The only disappointment was the lack of channels on the in-room TV - only the 5 terrestrial channels were available which is pretty poor in this day and age. I expect Sky Sports News as an absolute minimum! My only other complaint about the room is how creaky the floors were! They made a heck of a noise when you stepped in certain places and I'm sure the room below was cursing us when we got up just after 6am! But we didn't care cos we were going on holiday! :))
As with all Travelodges it is fairly basic with only 2 pillows and no turndown service, but you only have to ask at the front desk and they'll bring you whatever your heart desires! But if you want a cheap bed for the night, you really can't go wrong - especially at £19!
We had an early morning flight from East Midlands airport and despite only living about 45 minutes away we always like to stop near the airport the night before as it means it's much less hassle on the morning and there are no worries about getting stuck in traffic.
I have to say I booked this on a bit of a spur of the moment straight after I booked the flights as it was only £19 for a room so grabbed the deal. I then read some reviews on another review site and began to get a little worried. I have stayed in many Travelodge's before and have only had one bad experience (in London). As a general rule all Travelodge rooms are the same, if you stop in a newer one they are definitely nicer with more modern features but overall they are very similar.
Now I really needn't have worried...I can see where some of the complaints have come from - this hotel as well as being near East Midlands airport is very close to Donnington Park and when there is an event on becomes full very quickly as it is the cheapest option in the area (apart from camping!). Like any hotel I can imagine on these weekends it will get very busy and noisy. When we stayed it was reasonably quiet and I would say empty and therefore we didn't have too much of a problem - however the floor boards were very very creaky! I'm please we were getting up early as the people in the room above us were up early too! Our floor was just as bad so I don't know if it is a common theme!! You can hear people in the corridor and doors banging so I can see this being a problem on busy weekends.
Everyone knows a Travelodge is basic, so it really annoys me when people moan when you don't get the little luxuries of other hotels! It clearly states you don't get them!! If there is anything you want it is usually available at the reception.
The rooms were clean and tidy, nothing to complain about. The shower was really powerful and soap provided. I don't really need anymore than this for a hotel before a flight - I don't look for luxury I look for ease and convenience.
The location of this Travelodge is at a service area and the entrance is inside the main service area which has the usual shops, cafes, games areas etc. The service area is like a massive atrium and the Travelodge rooms are at either side of this, half the rooms overlook the service area (no natural light) and half overlook the surrounding area - the motorway/car park or petrol station.
The website does warn people that not all rooms have natural light, so if this is a problem for you avoid this hotel. We were lucky and got an outside facing room the opposite side to the motorway, therefore I can't comment on whether the other side suffers from motorway noise.
Your car can be parked in the service area free of charge - just make sure you give your reg number to reception when you arrive to avoid the fine for staying more than 2 hours!
Overall, this hotel was clean and served it's purpose, it's nothing fancy but was fine for what we wanted. I would probably avoid it on race weekends and wouldn't recommend it for a romantic weekend away, but for a cheap stopover en-route along the M1 or before flying out of EMA it's ideal - especially at £19!
Nottingham EM Airport Donington Park M1
Date of stay: 13th February 2009
Number of nights: 1
Number of guests: 2
Reason for stay:
A stop off before travelling to Yorkshire for a holiday on Saturday.
We paid £9.00 for the room only no breakfast, we actually booked this months ago when the sale was on! Booking was easy with no problems!
The hotel is situated in a service station near Donnington race track. Its perfect for track days (or when the grand prix starts there). Its very near to Loughborough for restaurants and bars etc.
Quick, easy and free. You can park right in front of it in the service station. They take your number plate and add it to their list.
Very friendly man who greeted us, asked us our car registration and gave us our key. Quick easy check in.
At first we were worried because we were told our room had no natural light so we thought it wasn't going to have a window! But instead we had a window that looked right into the service station which in the end became very amusing. We people watched for ages it was great lol!
The room was a palace compared to Birmingham. It was clean, we had 2 pillows each, clean towels, clean bathroom and it was very cosy indeed!
Perfect, friendly lady greeted us and asked how our stay was!
This is definitely one of the better travelodges we have stayed in. It was so clean and tidy it was a really nice stay. The staff actually looked like they wanted to be there and made you feel very welcome from the start.
Don't let the fact its in a service station put you off its very convenient actually and a very clean smart hotel!
Due to it's location there are a limited number of rooms are available with natural day light.
