Stratford Upon Avon

This hotel is located wonderfully for visits to Stratford Upon Avon as it is literally across the road from the world famous (and currently closed for refurbishment) Swan Theatre right next to the river Avon and within spitting distance of the main shopping street and some of the best restaurants in the town.
I have stayed here a number of times when we have visited Stratford for the theatre and on specific theatre breaks where the hotel and tickets are included as a package.
Such is its close proximity to the Swan that (when the theatre is open) the hotel bar fills up with theatre goers during the interval as it is usually less busy here than in the theatre bar itself, it is also a bit cheaper for drinks. It is amusing to see the looks on the faces of other, non-theatre going guests as for a 15 minute period the bar becomes absolutely rammed and then just as quickly empties again!
The food served here is very good and there are bar options as well as a proper restaurant to choose from. Both are pretty reliable and the bar menu in particular is very reasonably priced and offers some tasty options. Service in both bar and restaurant is very good, most of the staff are not British and a lot are foreign students on gap years trying to spend some time in this historical town, needless to say they are efficient, polite and speak very good English and the same can be said for reception staff at this hotel.
The rooms are pretty good although I have stayed in one or two that seem a bit tired and good do with a bit of a refurb. Usually rooms here are priced between £80-125 a night depending on whether you book in advance etc, it is well worth shopping around on the internet via different providers (ie hotels.com and tripadvisor) as you will frequently find it is priced differently on different sites.
Rooms are fairly spacious with en suite bathrooms and I have always been impressed with the showers in these rooms, they do seem to have spent decent money on these which is a plus. I have stayed in both twin and double rooms and always found the beds to be comfortable. You do get some noise from the street but not so much that it is a problem.
There are some superior rooms with four poster beds I believe but I have never stayed in these, they are advertised on reception as being around £150 a night so may be a nice idea for a romantic break or a special occasion perhaps.
There is high speed internet access available here, I have used the terminal in reception but I do not think there is wi-fi, I have certainly never seen anything advertising it within the hotel. There are conference facilities however and it does seem that most weekends, especially during the summer, the hotel is booked out for weddings. This does sometimes mean that the restaurant is out of bounds at weekends.
All in all this is a pretty good value hotel and cannot be beaten in terms of location, especially in relation to its proximity to the theatres of Stratford. Well worth looking at as a place to stay if you are planning a theatre break to this charming town any time soon.
