Beautiful hotel/reception, not bad rooms but BAD views and even worse customer service skills! We stayed at the Thistle Bloomsbury Hotel in July this year, they have just refurbished some of the rooms. First of all we were located in an old room located at the back of the Hotel with no views or basically a view of a window. The room was very dark and we asked for a non smoking family room and it was definitely smelling of smoke. Being a non smoking family we immediately pick up on these smells. We went down to reception whom were obviously too busy to deal with us! Snooty receptionist treated us like dirt. Everything we said seemed too much hassle to her. We paid a lot of money to stay in this hotel so wanted moved from our dark hole. Eventually later in the day when we arrived back from town we were moved, this room wasn't any better really but they explained they had no other rooms to give us. At least the new room didn't smell of smoke! But the views were very poor and to top it off we had a view of a roof net and a dead bird trapped in the net, disgusting! I think we were just unlucky with this Hotel as it is really nice inside if you can get a front view room, but obviously there's no family rooms until you get to the back of the hotel, facing air conditioning units and roof nets with dead birds staring at you!! The rooms were nice enough, comfortable beds, nice enough furniture and most importantly very clean. So we won't be going back here but for anyone that can get a front view room it is a superb located Hotel bang in the centre of London, a stone throw away from all great attractions.
Over the bank holiday weekend my mum and I went to London to visit my sister who lives in Russell square. We wanted a hotel near to her flat so searched all the prices of hotels around there, obviously with it being central London the prices were high, but luckily the thistle hotel accept tesco club card vouchers! The cost was £270, for two people for two nights, which over a bank holiday weekend I thought when booking that it was quite reasonable. The hotel is in a fantastic location, about a 20 min walk from St Pancreas/Kings cross. A 5 min walk from Russel Square tube station. And only costs about £5 in a famous London black cab to get to the West end and Trafalgar square. When we arrived at the hotel, the foyer was very nicely decorated and the receptionist was very polite and helpful. The dining room looked lovely, although breakfast does cost an extra £15 which we didn't opt for (next door there is a restaurant that does all you can eat breakfast for £6.99). We were allowed to check in early (10am), and shown to our room. Unfortunately we had a ground floor room, which was not very nice. There was wallpaper hanging off the walls, a damp smell and mould in the bathroom. This was disappointing however the Hotel is undergoing refurbishments at the moment so hopefully after this has taken place the rooms will be a lot better.
I stayed here a couple of years ago and although the location is great for theatre and shopping the hotel badly needed a refurbishment. I note now from their website that this is currently happening and the hotel has been renamed The Kingsley. It would appear that the refurb is due to be completed in June 2009. The building itself would have been lovely in its day, it is Edwardian and I do hope that they manage to keep the character and features from that time whilst updating the rooms to a high standard. The hotel was clean and comfortable, but the ensuites were quite small and had cracked and missing wall tiles. The rooms were not huge but of a reasonable size for central London. We were not disturbed by any outside noise, again a plus for the location. It was competetively priced for the location, but the shabbiness did let it down. Breakfast was the usual buffet and we had no complaints there. The staff were very friendly and the concierge in particular was exceptionally helpful. They stored luggage for us as we had arrived pre check in time and were not leaving until later in the day on the departure day, so no faults there. We did eat one night in the bar and again no complaints with that. I have given this hotel 4 stars as other than the need of a refurb there was no other faults with the hotel, and as this is currently being addressed I would say it should soon be an excellent hotel to stay in - as long as they dont massively increase their rates.
