The Famous Star Hotel
The Famous Star Hotel is in Moffat, A lovely little picturesque town in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is one of hundreds of hotels in Scotland but this one is different. Although it is 162 feet long, it is only 20 feet wide! It is listed in the Guinness Book Of Records as the "worlds narrowest detached hotel". It sits on Moffat High Street; a lovely old brick fronted building with two big bay windows, one on top of the other and dates back to the 1700's. There are two small steps up to the front door which may prove difficult for some.
The Hotel has a first class restaurant and two bars. It also has eight en suite rooms. Although I didn't stay in the Hotel I did visit their restaurant. It is comfortably furnished with lovely dark wood tables and chairs and crisp white table cloths.
We were shown to our seats and our drinks order was quickly taken. We were given a while to browse the menu and the waiter took our order; we were not rushed in anyway at all. I chose broccoli and cheese bake which came with a choice of jacket potato, chips or salad and my fiancé Mark chose steak.
The food was served and it looked lovely, really well presented. Everything that was supposed to be hot was piping hot and the salad lovely, fresh and chilled. Mark assured me his steak was excellent too. I can not comment on the desserts because we were so full by the generous main course we couldn't manage any! I was upset about this because they sounded really delicious.
The staff were helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. When we finished our meal we ordered coffee and were invited to either drink it in the restaurant or take it through to the lounge bar, we chose the bar. This was equally as pleasant and comfortable. The bar had a warm friendly atmosphere with a mixture of both locals and holiday makers.
I did visit the loos and they were clean, and smelt nice, I could not fault them at all.
The drinks, coffees and main courses we had cost roughly £30.00, very good for what we were given, as the main courses as I have said were very generous!!!!! Originally we went into The Famous Star Hotel because of the novelty factor, just so we could claim to have been in the narrowest dethatched hotel in the world but it turned out to be a very good restaurant that serves first class food.
Well worth a visit if you are in Moffat!
