“ Address: 8-10 Esplanade / Scarborough / England „
I have just returned from two days in the Crown Spa Hotel, Scarborough, and whilst it is fresh in my mind, am providing you with a comprehensive review.
I travelled with my husband, 10 week old daughter, and my mum (in a separate room).
**Why the Crown Spa?**
I chose the Crown Spa initially because I wanted to stay in a Hotel rather than a Guest House, as my husband finds Guest Houses a little too familiar (based on an experience where the landlady of one in Blackpool sat down next to us and told us all about her divorce..!). I also wanted a pool, so my baby daughter could have her first swim, and a lift, so we didn't have to carry the buggy up and down the stairs.
The Hotel is the only four star in the area, so we knew that standards would be high.
The Crown Spa is located on the Esplanade which is over on the South Cliff area of Scarborough. This is the slightly quieter, and slightly more residential end of Scarborough, which overlooks the beach and attractions whilst being far enough away from them as not to be noisy. It's only a ten minute pleasant walk through the gardens down to the attractions, or into Scarborough town centre. You can also take a lift down the cliff for 70p.
I booked our rooms only a week beforehand as I wanted to be sure my husband would be able to get the time off from the office, and also I wanted to book the days with the best weather. I called the hotel and was advised that as I have a baby they recommended the family room as they are larger, and for £10 extra we could have a sea view - I decided to treat us and go for a sea view each.
Prices for us were £129 per room per night for a superior family room with sea view, and £80 per room per night for a standard single with sea view. This price includes a full English breakfast. The prices on the website may vary - we were advised this is a late availability (and non refundable) price.
The lady on the phone was helpful, pleasant and very efficient.
One great thing about Scarborough and the Crown Spa Hotel is that they offer free parking for zoned areas (ours was 3L). You scratch off a panel and leave it in your windscreen and can park anywhere in Scarborough in that zone for the duration of your stay - we were lucky enough to get right in front of the hotel. There are also 18 bookable parking spaces to the rear of the hotel but we opted for the street parking as it made it easier to access the boot and side door with our daughter.
Booking in was efficient, we were a little early so we went to the cafe 'Taste' where complimentary tea and coffee is provided for guests. Unfortunately this didn't seem too well appointed to as there was a lack of milk, spoons and hot water, but it was a decent gesture.
The superior family room was excellent, but on the phone I was told only that it was bigger - in actual fact it had a room off to one side with two single beds in it. If I'd have known that, I wouldn't have needed the separate room for my mum, I could just have paid £15 for her breakfast. Presumably they don't allow this, and the beds went unslept.
The room itself was lovely, however. The bed, a Queen sized double, had good quality bedding and cushions (and even a teddy bear!) The facilities included a large LCD screen with Freeview, a telescope to look over the bay, tea and coffee making facilities and a folder of local information.
The bathroom was very highly kitted out with a nice bath with waterfall tap, and a centrally mounted rainfall shower. There was mood lighting in pink / purple as well as regular lighting. There were plenty of towels and two robes for our use, and complimentary toiletries which were of a good quality.
One disappointment is that there was no air conditioning. We visited the Crown Spa on one of the hottest days of the year - 26 degrees and counting. It was so ridiculously hot, and the windows opened only five inches. There was an ice machine down the corridor which was temperamental to say the least. So our night's sleep was somewhat interrupted by the extreme heat - when my daughter woke up for a feed I was unable to get back to sleep due to this. The bed was extremely comfortable - it was just the heat.
My mum's single room was very nice too for a standard - smaller, but same high quality finish and a good sized bathroom too.
The sea view was spectacular - there's the South Cliff Gardens, the sea, and very far away the curved coastline. Stunning, and well worth the extra cost - I'd highly recommend it.
It being a spa hotel, there are plenty of facilities for use by the resident, including a swimming pool, spa jet pool, sauna, a gym, nail bar, and beauty salon. It's all newly refurbished and in the basement of the hotel and I have to say our experience was first class. The pool allowed children from 7.30am to 9.30am and then from 4pm to 6pm. We took our baby daughter in for a swim and she loved it. We then had a go in the spa jet pool and it was hot and relaxing - lovely.
We enjoyed both an evening meal in the Crown Spa as well as the breakfast. There is plenty of variety in the Taste restaurant, I had a spaghetti carbonara, my husband went for the lamb burger, and my mum had an afternoon tea. All were very nice - though at 8pm the staff seemed a little absent minded due to the amount of work and we had to continually call for them (and questions regarding the menu went unanswered). So apart from that, a good experience.
Breakfast was very nice though we were advised to go early as it gets busy - we went in at 8am. There was a good choice of pastries, cereals, fruits, breads for toasting and fruit juices as well as tea and coffee. The cooked breakfast had vegetarian options if required or could be substituted for a smoked kipper. We went for the works, which came with baked beans (some don't - sacrilege!) and it was very nice indeed.
Overall our stay at the Crown Spa was overwhelmingly positive. Our issues with the lack of air con were more to do with the extreme heatwave Scarborough was experiencing at the time, and the staff were very polite and helpful - just a bit busy and forgetful now and again.
I have no doubt that this is one of the best Hotels in Scarborough - if not the best Hotel - and from looking on Trip Advisor, it's rated number four overall. Of the top five this is the only one on the front, so if you're looking for the luxury experience in a good old fashioned seaside town, then go for the Crown Spa. It might not be the cheapest but it's facilities, overall finish, food and experience more than show where the money goes.
I don't think I will (or can!) stay anywhere else in Scarborough now!
The Crown Spa Hotel is the only 4 star hotel on the Yorkshire coast and when you stay there you certainly know that its 4 star. The hotel is located on the cliff top above the Scarborough Spa Theatre Complex. The front of the building looks great and stands out in the Victorian terraces that it sits in. The large columns and balcony give it a special look.
To get to the town centre and you have to take a short walk along the quiet South Cliff Esplanade and the Spa Pedestrian Bridge.
It has won Yorkshire Moors & Coast Tourism Awards Hotel of the Year for 2007 and 2008.
Also situated in the hotel is the Crown Spa Health Club. This is a private members fitness club that boasts a fully equipped gymnasium with qualified fitness instructors. The Club offers a range of activities and the friendly team can provide inductions to the gym; personal training sessions, lifestyle sessions and classes both in the pool and studio.
To unwind, the relaxation area provides a tranquil atmosphere with the 40ft indoor pool, large Jacuzzi, saunas, steam room and aromatherapy room to indulge in.
When you are staying in the Hotel there is complimentary membership to the Crown Spa Health Club.
I stayed there with my young family and we had a room with a large double bed and a sofa double bed. The room was very spacious and the bathroom was all that you expected for a place such as this. The views out of the room over Scarborough front were spectacular. The Heating in the room was very good an often needed turning down as it did get hot. We were staying in early November time so the heating was required. One thing about the room was the television was not up to scratch and I did complain that there were problems with it and it was replaced.
There is the Taste restaurant for the fine dining and the Taste café bar for the less informal dining. The food in both was really good and I would recommend having something to eat in the hotel during your stay. The surrounding in both dining areas was very comfortable and spacious with a very modern look.
The breakfasts were top notch my kids really loved going for breakfast here they would try everything. It was mainly self services and you could go back as often as you liked. Never did they run out of anything at all and there was plenty to choose from.
Pool & Leisure
There is a small swimming pool were you can go for a leisurely swim, also available are the delights of the large jacuzzi, sauna, sanarium, aroma room, steam room, retreat lounge, and gym. These are all great to use while you are staying in the hotel. They are situated on the ground floor of the hotel. If you have children they are only aloud in the pool at certain times during the day. We used the pool with our children and they loved it the shape and size of it was great for them. The times that they were aloud into the pool were family friendly times too.
The staff in the hotel was great starting with the reception team that was very friendly and helpful. They even knew about local events that we were interested in and gave us local information about how to get there and were to park.
What more can I say about this place if you are stopping in Scarborough and you want to try something special then get yourself booked into this place.
