THIS IS OUR SECOND VISIT SINCE SEPTEMBER 2007 AND WE FIND THE NEW OWNERS ARE DOING A VERY GOOD JOB. THEY ARE VERY FRIENDLY AND THE ROOMS AND BEDDING ARE VERY CLEAN ALSO THE FOOD IS COOKED TO PERFECTION. RUTH IS AN EXCELLENT LAND LADY AND SHE IS VERY WELL SUPPORTED BY HER HUSBAND AND THE REST OF HER STAFF. THERE IS A VARIED MENU AT DINNER TIME AND WITH THE COMFORTABLE LOUNGE AND BAR FACILITIES THE HOTEL HAS MUCH TO BE ADMIRED FOR AND WE WILL BE BACK FOR MORE IN THE NEW YEAR. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK RUTH AS YOU KNOW WE WILL BE BACK. TO SEE THE PLACE AS BUSY AT BREAKFAST THIS MORNING WAS QUITE SOMETHING. It was out of necessity really that we visited this hotel. We were attending a wedding, and typical of myself, had left the booking of the hotel till the last minute, and all the nearby hotels were fully booked. It was enough when we got there just to find a nice enough looking hotel with clean rooms (We were a little worried by the rather drab appearance of the hotel next door!). The hotel itself only has 12 bedrooms, all from what I can gather of typical size. ( I did ask some of the other guests). Our room was a small double with ensuite shower facilities. Each room also has a TV and tea/coffee facilities. The Steer Inn is however only a hotel second, and a restaurant first. Apparently it is famous in the area as a steakhouse. To be perfectly honest, to me steak is steak, and is not the meal I usually choose when I go out. It is easily prepared at home, and when done so, is prepared exactly to your own preferences, so I was a little disappointed with the range on the menu - ie about 4 pages describing how big you can have your steak. To be fair there was plenty of other choices, and a couple for the veggies, who to be honest, shouldn't really be there in the first place. In the end I opted for the steak - partly because I felt a little foolish ordering fish, and went for the smallest one on the menu - an 8oz Fillet. After about 10 minutes or so you are escorted to your table in The 'Sir Loin Room' (Maybe one of the lesser known of the Pendragon dynasty?) by one of the extremely cordial staff. The meal can only be described as excellent. I had ordered the steak well done, as I cannot face the blood pouring on to my plate, and that is exactly what I got. Many restaurants, upset by the fact that you actually want your steak cooking mistake the concept of 'well done' with that of 'cremation', but Iwas very impressed with the texture and flavour. I think I spent the rest of the night boring my friends with my little 'joke' about the steak being so fresh that they must have an abbatoir outside. The staff at the hotel were very helpful and courteous. They took total control of booking a taxi, and even saved us half the fare by introducing us to another couple at the same hotel going to the same wedding. Even at 2 o'clock in the morning, upon our return, when alcohol had had a detrimental effect on our sanity and civility the proprieter treated us with a dignity we did not deserve. The next morning we were treated to a full cooked English breakfast, again of a fantastic quality. All in all - a very pleasant stay - and we are planning our next visit soon. The prices were very reasonable considering how close to York we were: Pint of Bitter and a glass of wine < £4 8oz Fillet with chips and salad < £9 Double Room (ensuite) approx £40 per room Directions: Take the road to Hull out of York (or vice versa) The hotel is on the right, about 7 miles out in a village called Wilberfoss, just before Pocklington. There is also caravan park at the rear of the Hotel, managed by the staff there.
