Even though I come from Grimsby, I have also stayed in one of the hotels there. In the town centre is the St. James which is the biggest hotel in the centre of Grimsby. Other large hotels are available on the outskirts of town but nothing as close to the shops and pubs. The St. James has 125 rooms, all of which have en-suite, free Wi-Fi and tea/ coffee making facilities. Each room also has a TV. Available are single, double and twin rooms. During my stay, I chose a double room as I was there with my boyfriend at the time. The room was quite large and spacious although the décor was pretty dated. As well as the double bed in the main room, there was also a desk which the TV sat on, an arm chair and a wardrobe where you could hang any clothes. On either side of the bed was also a lamp. While this room was quite basic, it served its purpose. Even though the décor didn't bother me too much, I do think that the rooms here are in desperate need of updating or even just a fresh coat of paint and new bedding in most cases. The en-suite was a completely different story though. The bathroom was again large and spacious, just like the bedroom but with the white tiling and contemporary shower unit, it looked a lot nicer. Towels are provided for each person, one small and one bath towel as well as shampoo and shower gel. The shower was absolutely lovely and I could have stayed in there for ages. With its good water pressure, this shower was something to die for and I wasn't expecting that after seeing how the bedroom was presented. The bathrooms here definitely make up for other things which are lacking. This hotel has been around for as long as I can remember, longer actually as my Nanna used to work in the pub next door and my Dad in the hotel as a night porter. I have been in the hotel a couple of times previously to staying in it as a guest and the décor doesn't seem to have changed much over the years. However, the reception area is quite modern now and is bright and cheery - as are the staff. Check in was very simple, with my card being taken for payment and then being given my room keys with an explanation of what floor I would be staying on. The hotel has both stairs and a lift so each floor is accessible. The lifts are right in front of the reception desk so cannot be missed. To the right of the reception desk is the Chantry Restaurant which serves bistro style food. I actually worked here as a waitress and in the kitchen during my work experience at secondary school. The restaurant is light and airy with big double doors being opened during the summer months. The restaurant also has a fully licensed bar if you would like a drink with your meal or if you fancy one at the night time. The food in the restaurant here is always nice and fresh. Although I didn't eat here during my stay at the hotel, I have done on many different occasions and would highly recommend it if you don't want normal pub food from anywhere else. Prices at this hotel start from £39 a night which is very good value. Generally, double or twin rooms cost about £45 a night but I wouldn't mind paying this at all if I had to stay there again. As the hotel is in the town centre, it is great for nights out or shopping. Once I move away from Grimsby for good next year, I will definitely stay at the St. James when I come home to visit with my boyfriend. It may not be the best hotel in the world but it is good value for money and the bathrooms are great!
