For my mums 60th a few weeks ago we decided to go away instead of the obligatory party or meal.
Now where to go to please 12 guests aged 3 - 65 ...
Our immediate thought was centre parks and we went online to check out the prices. A bit steep but it wasnt school holidays, it was under a two hour drive and there were plenty of activities to choose from for all ages.
The night we were going to book, I googled the area we had chosen to visit and stumbled across the Sherwood Castle Holiday Forest Resort.
Beautiful log cabins set in 40 acres of private woodland right in the heart of Robin Hood Country. The park claimed to offer a wide range of facilities to suit all ages and all tastes.
I typed in the dates that we had already chosen for our visit and had to ask someone to pinch me when the quotes came up. Between the 12 of us the saving was just shy of £700 !
Surely there had to be a catch?
Armed with my new quotes under my arm I went along to the family meeting feeling very pleased with myself!
The family, not quite believing me, checked it out online for themselves.
Indoor heated swimming pool and spa, badminton+ basketball, boules, table tennis, air hockey, giant draughts, mini croquet, mini putting, tennis court, play areas (1-5s & 3-12s), pool table, shuffle board and skittles. Outdoor facilities to include an adventure play area (3-12s), 5-a-side football, animal corner, pitch and putt, children's mountain bike circuit. Archery (tuition available), crazy golf and nature trails. There really was something for everyone and all weather conditions!
Needless to say we booked here.
We arrived (after missing the sign - its very small) at check in time and checking in was a breeze. I handed over a £10 deposit for heating and electricity and reception handed over the keys.
The cheery chap on reception gave me a brief tour and pointed out certain props that were actually used in the making of the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves film. YES Kevin Costner had been here !!!! Most famously the tower he escaped from.
Personally I stayed in a Forester 4 which was a log cabin set on the lake which slept 8 in 4 bedrooms. Two double and two bunk bedded rooms. My favourite part was that all beds were made on our arrival!
The master bedroom had a TV and ensuite shower room. There was also a Video/DVD and freeview channels available.(Our dvd player didnt work but it was changed without fuss the next morning when reception opened) Fridge/freezer and washing machine all included. The main bathroom was an excellent size. There was central heating throughout which we were glad of in the evenings.
As there were 12 of us, we took up the option of hiring the indoor pool each morning privately. It cost £20 an hour but due to the size of our party was definately worth the money and mum loved sitting in the spa!
I must comment on how clean it all was and efficiently run with well mannered helpful staff.
The area was beautiful and we spent hours exploring Robin Hood county!
To sum up I would definately go again, I would recommend to friends of all ages and would definately weigh up the cost differences between this and centre parcs only a few miles away!
Perhaps the only downside would be that there is no restaurant on site but we found plenty of friendly pubs a short distance away. Weather permitting there are also BBQ facilities.
