We booked a one night stay here whilst we were visiting legoland Windsor as we managed to get a great deal of £29 for two adults, two children and one baby in a cot. What A stay, the bed I slept in was kingsize and I had a great night sleep.
The location for legoland is brilliant as it is only a ten minute drive, there is also a tesco nearby where you can go and stock up on your packed lunch items.
The room is your standard premier inn decor and the comfort is what you come to expect from this hotel chain. I tend to book a hotel stay at least once a month and so can compare each hotel because I look out for a bargain but I still want a quality hotel which my daughters enjoy staying in and this exceeded my expectations. The hotel is quite easy to miss unless you have the directions as it is out of the way of the other legoland hotels but none the less this one is well worth the drive time.
We were in a room just above the entrance and also next to the lift however we did not once hear any external noise and had a great nights sleep, I would recommend this hotel especially if you have little ones and are planning on visiting legoland, however if you are planning on going out in the night this may not be for you as there was nothing to do if you have children other than a meal in the bar then back to the room for bedtime!
The Premier Travelinn brand is a recent amalgamation of the Premier Lodge and Travel Inn brands. The chain is owned by the Whitbread group and this merger means they now have 460 inns up and down the country. Indeed some big cities have as many as 10 Premier Travelinns within their boundaries.
My recent stay was at the Premier Travel Inn, in Slough. I have to go to Slough almost every other week atthe moment and try and stay in this property whenever I can, for convenience to the office (and town centre) where I base myself, and the free parking, which is rare in the town.
It's not just the parking fees that are frustrating - it is the fact you need something like £50 in coins for the week, just to pay for it!
At the Premier Travelinn in Slough, parking is free and there is AMPLE. There is at least one car parking space for each room. The car park is regularly patrolled by security staff too.
Location is on Uxbridge Road just outside the town centre of Slough itself. It took me approximately 10 minutes to walk into town each day. The walk itself involves crossing two quite busy roads, but there are underpasses for both roads regardless. You cannot turn right into the property itself and so you need to drive several hundred yards up the road before you can do a U turn. This wasn't signposted clearly, but as the Inn itself is visible from the nearest roundabout junction I am sure it isn't a huge problem.
I booked on line via www.premiertravelinn.com (after ringing their call centre to check on the parking situation!) The website itself is easy to navigate, and you can search for a property in a number of ways including town, postcode, local attraction, road number, or simply by choosing one from a drop down menu.
Some elements of the online booking menu were a little quirky. For example, as I was travelling alone, the system wanted to give me only the single or disabled room options. Not knowing the room availability I wanted to be assured of a double! As the rates were the same either way, I input two adults, to make sure I got the room I wanted. It's the same if you only have a baby (needing cot) and try and get a family room - it won't let you pick one as a double is deemed adequate.
However room aside the process was straightforward and nothing out of the ordinary. You will need a credit card to guarantee your reservation and you can cancel before 1pm on the day of arrival without charge.
You can get text confirmation, which is handy, as well as the regular email confirmation of booking.
This chain tends to advertise a weekday and a weekend Rack Rate. In this case Slough is £65.95 Mon-Thu and £49.95 Fri-Sun. Unless there is an exceptional event in town, then this is the most you should pay. (These rates exclude breakfast and are valid as at Dec 05)
There is no facility to get cheaper rooms on the web at the moment, unlike that big blue competitor.
Check in has usually been swift and friendly, and I was served immediately despite it being around 6pm on a Monday night. You do need to prepay your accommodation on arrival, including any extras - you cannot run up an account here. I particularly noticed the fact that they recognised the security of guests and did not say the room number out loud, but simply pointed to it on the keycard.
The reception area was modern and airy, with a small seating area and the bar and restaurant area leading off. Access to the bedrooms is via a security door, so a swipe key is needed. There is a lift to upper floors.
The room itself was certainly very comfortable. I had a large double bed, (of the six foot variety which can also be two single beds) This particular Inn is a Metro Inn, which means rooms have additional features such as satellite TV, complimentary toiletries. hairdryers and internet access points. This dual standard of rooms probably explains why there is disparity of opinion across the group, together with the fact that two chains amalgamated!
Another neat feature was the ability to control the room temperature - not often found especially in budget accommodation. I have to say the bed itself was extremely toasty, and I was convinced there was some kind of electric blanket system, which was certainly appreciated by me in the November temperature.
The room was always impeccably made up each day, down to any clothes which were lying about were folded.
Another advantage of this inn compared to a third one I have stayed at regularly in Slough, is the availability of a restaurant on site. For a woman travelling alone this is important. I have no qualms eating in a hotel restaurant but I certainly don't want to eat in an attached pub!
I didn't sample breakfast, however full breakfast is available for £7.95 with all the usual breakfast items. Up to four kids can breakfast for free with a paying adult.
I have eaten several enjoyable meals in the restaurant for dinner. Service was pleasant, timely, and the ambience was fine. The Menu was very extensive, and would compare with an extensive pub style menu. It is by no means fine dining, and it probably isn't the kind of place you would choose for a romantic meal, but it was reasonable, with enough choice for everyone and a specials board on top.
Finally, you cannot get room service, but you can order a "takeaway" pizza from the bar and take it to your room. I have had this twice now. It is a little frustrating, that you need to go downstairs to order and pay, then go BACK down to collect it 15-20 minutes later....Hmmm.
This can be costly, especially if you are on business. Dial up costs 20p a minute, or you can purchase a £5 phone card from reception and you will benefit from the cheaper rate of 14p per minute. This particular hotel still does not have Wi-Fi access. Still, at least it worked, unlike in the place where I stopped for my last three visits!
Things that niggled me a little
1. Newspapers. I had paid on arrival for three newspapers, one for each morning. However these are collected at reception. I forgot the first morning, and by the time I remembered later that night it was gone. Second morning, I remembered on my way out and it had still been taken by someone else! I gave up. They did refund my payment, but I would have preferred my paper!
2. I wanted an ironing board and iron, which in this kind of establishment is usually only available from reception. However I had to leave a £5 cash deposit for this. Policies like this frustrate me - I often don't carry cash, and it also implies guests are all thieves.
Overall I recommend this Premier Travelinn. Accommodation in the area is not cheap and this gives a good reasonable standard of clean accommodation, without the luxuries of say four star hotels. It is ideally located for Heathrow Airport and the areas of Slough and Windsor, and is a good base if you are visiting tourist attractions in that area. The staff gave good service, and while I had some minor niggles, they are not enough to cause a loss of enjoyment during the stay.
Customer Service Number 0870 242 8000 - during extreme busy periods e.g. before the 1pm cut off, this service is answered by an auto-attendant, but you can still cancel if you need to.
