A good airport hotel that's not expensive

If you're looking for a hotel near Dublin that will keep you out of the poor house, while still giving you style and comfort, the Premier Inn at the Airside Retail Park in Swords is the place to stay. With modern, tastefully decorated rooms and almost all the necessary amenities, this clean hotel offers an airport shuttle that makes it ultimately convenient for the transient traveler. Mind you, it isn't optimal for visiting the city, but if you're willing to take a 20 minute bus ride into town, it isn't the worst place you could stay.

The rooms here aren't huge, but they certainly are big enough to not feel cramped with a large king-sized bed right in the middle. While there's no built in closet, there is some open hanging space and a luggage rack in the corner, next to a small desk that holds both the TV and the coffee/tea facilities, but sans a refrigerator. The bathroom isn't terribly large and doesn't have a tub, but the shower stall is spacious and along with the needed sink and toilet you do get a hairdryer and plug for your shaver.

Everything seemed very clean and mostly looked very new, so the condition was tip-top. At first we thought that once again, we had been given towels for only one person, but we soon noticed they'd left more in the hanging area (since the bathroom didn't seem to have enough space to place them all), so we didn't actually need to bother room service - but I'm sure if we had, they would have been up to snuff.

We were very impressed with the front desk efficiency, since they seem to know about everything that is needed to know about the area as well as getting into town. They were fast on the uptake and understand that many of their guests are there just for the night in order to grab a flight the next morning. Because of this, they allow you to pay as you check-in, which is an added plus.

After wandering around the city for a few hours, we decided we were too tired to have a drink in town and instead got one at their bar after our return. This seemed to be amply stocked with about everything anyone could wish for, including beers and wines, and most importantly, Guinness on tap for my husband - something that we thought any self-respecting Irish hotel should have in their bars.

Since our flight was early the next morning, we decided to forego their breakfast, although they do serve it from very early in the morning - just not early enough for our particular flight. From the menu we saw, however, it certainly looked like it might have been a good idea, had we had the time. We also noticed a good amount of staff attending the dining room, as well as the lobby seating areas the evening before, so I'm certain their service is excellent.

Being an airport hotel, there are courtesy busses every 30 minutes to and from the airport - making getting here and back to your flight a real breeze. Getting into town, however, is another matter. There are busses from the main road, which is only a short walk from the hotel, and while they seemed pretty frequent in the afternoon, getting back isn't as easy. Good thing we stopped by the transport offices as we were walking around, since we would never have known where to find the bus back, had we missed giving that a visit.

The hotel is located near a large shopping center, but aside from a restaurant or two, there don't seem to be many places to live it up in the evenings nearby, but then again, most airport hotels are like that.

Of course, being so close to the airport (no more than a 10 minute ride, even during rush-hour), you might think that this hotel isn't the most quiet around. However, the exact opposite is true. The insulation for this hotel is excellent and while there's only a tiny window in the room, the addition of air conditioning means you can leave that closed and not hear anything at all.

In all, if you're in need of a one-night stay near Dublin just before or after your flight, the Premier Inn Airport Hotel is an excellent choice. The best part is you can get a double room for £59 (which is Euro69) which might not be huge, but it is reasonably sized, very comfortable, quiet, clean and perfectly serviced. I'd say its well worth the price, and will give it four out of five stars.
