For a forthcoming weekend in Brighton, my partner and I needed accommodation. As usual we left everything to the last minute and were struggling to find a reasonably priced B & B for the Saturday night. In the end I decided to check the lodge chains to see what I could come up with. I found the Premier Inn in Brighton which seemed to have an excellent location. It was priced as £95 for the Saturday night and £49 for the Sunday, overall making it more competitive that the £75/80 per night B & Bs. This didn't include breakfast however, which was a further £7.99 (which we passed on). For this we did get a Family Room where a sofa was made into a bed. It is not something we requested (or needed) but it may have been all that was available when we booked a week prior. I don't know if 'ordinary;' doubles/twins would be available normally at a reduced cost. I booked online and it was incredibly straight forward taking just two minutes and confirmation was e-mailed to me promptly. There is a £2 supplement for credit card payments - the whole bill is paid on arrival.
This particular hotel is in an excellent location on North Street, which is a popular shopping street, and is a few minutes walk from the Lanes (the more boutique shops, cafes and restaurants), the Royal Pavilion and the Sea Front. We got the train down and it is approx 7-10 mins walk from the station. The hotel does not offer a car park but has a deal with the NCP car park behind it which offers 25% discount. This still comes to £15 in the week and £18.75 at weekends however.
Check in is from 2pm and we arrived just after noon. They have a luggage store and the staff member gave us a ticket and labelled our case as if it was going on a plane. This service is free but they do ask for a voluntary £1 donation to Water Aid. When we got back we checked in easily and my card was charged. The staff member informed us of their money back promise if we don't have a goodnight's sleep and checked if we wanted breakfast. As I understand it we didn't have to book breakfast if we hadn't decided and could just turn up (and presumably pay then).
Adjacent to the reception was the bar and restaurant area. As well as cooked or continental breakfasts, this branch had a full restaurant offering an extensive range of standard dishes for fairly reasonable prices. As far as main courses go, only steaks exceeded the £10 mark. There was also a bar/lounge area with a pool table. In reception there were a couple of vending machines if you just wanted a bottle of water or a chocolate bar. Although we didn't frequent the restaurant and bar it seemed clean and was tastefully furnished in light wood furnishings, and brown leather chairs. The whole space was light and airy, although somewhat characterless. The main reason we didn't use these facilities was that a whole range of interesting restaurants, bars and pubs were just a few minutes walk away. We also ate out for breakfast as this was often slightly cheaper with there being a number of small cafes offering cooked breakfasts within 5 minutes walk in most directions.
Our room was on the third floor and there are two lifts. Upon exiting the lift you use your key card to access the corridor(s) from which the rooms are located, which is a good security measure. I did find that our card didn't work at one point on the second day - but this was re-set quickly at reception. Our room was of a good size with plain, light wood wardrobes, tables and shelves. There was a 150cm bed with white duvet cover. The single bed looked to be a converted sofa. There were large windows in the room and the room always felt light and airy. Curtains were effective and made the room dark, so you were not disturbed by the light in the morning - this had the opposite effect of us sleeping in a bit too long on the Sunday!
There were enough towels for two people - bath and hand sized. The bathroom was a good size with space to move about; the shower was over the bath and was easy to control, although the first one up in the morning had to wait for the water to run through a while before it went hot. There were hand rails on the bath to make getting in and out easier. Imperial Leather hair and body gel was available in the shower, and there was an anti-bacterial hand wash by the sink. A sticker reminded guests that they could purchase items they were missing from reception (although if you remember in good time, there is a branch of Boots down the road).
I was pleasantly surprised by my stay at the Premier Inn Brighton City Centre. I found the bed comfortable and the room to be of a good standard. Aside form the bar/restaurant there were no other facilities, but we didn't need any. The staff were always friendly and helpful, and seemed genuinely pleased to help us. There was no grumpiness or attitude. Location wise, this hotel is also excellent, and no doubt more competitively priced than the hotels, two streets away on the sea front
