      Excellent value

I stayed in the Park Inn in St Helen's for a single night back in July 2009. It was basically a place for me and my partner to stop over as we were attending a wedding around the area and it was a four hour drive to get back home. Staying the night somewhere local made things a lot easier. At the same time we did not want to pay over the odds for a room that we would only be using for sleeping so I thought that the Park Inn would be a cost-effective choice.

I found the hotel through laterooms.com (a website which is really good for finding hotels). As I was looking for something modestly priced I was very pleased to see that one night for a double room at the Park Inn would cost just £47. This did not include breakfast but I still thought that this price was very reasonable.

The hotel is located just off the A570, which can be reached using the M62. The hotel is also accessible from the M6, so I guess it depends on which direction you are coming from. As we were driving up to Liverpool, this information was relevant to us, but I also know that Manchester airport is 20 miles away from the hotel and is the preferred international airport if staying in the Park Inn. Liverpool John Lennon airport is less far and is located around a 20 min drive away from the hotel. St Helens Central train station is also reported to be a short walk away, although I did not go there myself.

The hotel is located not far from town, and is close to a number of shops, most of which are places to grab a quick bit to eat. Tesco's is also nearby, which I thought was great in terms of convenience. It was great being next to places that sold food, as late at night when me and my partner were quite hungry, we decided to go out and grab what was a very yummy burger rather than order off of a slightly bland looking room service menu. We only had to walk for three minutes outside of the hotel before finding a place that made delicious burgers!

Checking in to the room took a little longer than I would have liked. Like I said, I had booked our room through a website. But I did not take a copy of the confirmation email with me. I thought that giving them my surname at check-in would have been all the information they needed in order to check us in. But they needed to know exactly which website we had booked through because of a rather complicated computer system they used for the check in process. I couldn't actually remember who I had booked the room through at the time and so this just delayed the whole process. However I must stress that I do think the check in staff handled this as well as they could have, because we were told not to worry, they would get us into a room anyway whilst they tried to locate our reservation details. By the next morning, they had managed to get it all sorted and apologised very nicely for the delay in getting the matter sorted, and I felt they were genuinely polite and sorry about it.

The room we stayed in was perfectly adequate. It was a double room, and contained a standard sized double bed which was covered in fresh white linen. The bed was comfortable to sleep in and was clean. No nasty stains anywhere, which is always a relief when you stay in budget hotels! The room also had a small table and a chair inside. There was also a decent sized TV with a remote control.

The room itself was nice and clean. The size of the room was good. We had enough space to have two small suitcases in with us quite comfortably. The room floor was carpeted, and the décor of the room was simple and neutral. We were on the third floor. The room did not really have that much of a view - we were basically overlooking part of the hotels roof. But this was not important as we did not book the room to have a nice view!

The temperature in the room was very comfortable. I am unsure as to whether the air conditioning was on or not, but I did not find the room too cold or too warm. In addition the room did not smell stale, it felt fresh. I say this because in the past I have found a few hotel rooms to have a certain stale smell about them, as though very little air circulation has taken place, but thankfully this was not an issue at the Park Inn.

The room service menu was rather extensive, with a selection of sandwiches, hot dishes and salads on offer throughout the day. After 10pm (I think it was 10pm but it may have been slightly earlier or later) they only did room service for a small selection of the menu. The limited selection of foods available on the room service menu wasn't very tasty sounding which is why we got some food from outside when it got late, but I think the fact that they offered even a selection for 24 hours was really good.

The en-suite bathroom facilities were adequate. It was a basic bathroom with a bathtub and toilet really. I did think the bathtub was a little small but it was perfectly okay for our usage for just one night. I noticed the shower curtains were a little dirty at the bottom. It looked like a build-up of lime scale more than anything else.

To conclude, I was very happy with our stay at the Park Inn at St Helen's. It provided everything we needed for our stay, was very conveniently located, was excellent value, and we got a very comfortable night's sleep there!
