      avoid at all costs

Avoid this place at all costs !!!

We stayed here in 2009 and got a bargain of a deal on room and breakfast (under £30). The location in Northumberland is beautiful and aprox 1 hours drive from Durham, and 20 mins from Newcastle Airport. The hotel itself is quite a stunning building in nice grounds. We did have to wait 30 minutes before the receptionist turned up. We were guided through a complex route to my room which was very impressive. It had a huge jacuqi bath tub which lit up and had a tv next to it, shame the tv didn't work. The bathroom was a bit weird as it was open plan with the bedroom and only seperated by a pathetic stringy curtain, and seeing my other half on the toilet was not a thing I wanted to see.

The restaurant was a let down, very expensive, not much vegetarian choice and the quality was average. i would recommend going to a nearby pub.

The decor was lovely, the bed comfy and overall a stunning room. The problems came when after using the jacuqi at 10pm it would turn itself on every 15 minutes and send a roaring noice that would wake us up. At this time there was no staff about and after 1 hour and finding the night porter, i told him the problem, which he seemed aware of, and basically told us there was nothing he could do. Finally he managed to disconnect it and at 4am I got a couple of hours sleep.

I made the manager aware of the problem the next day but they seemed disinterested. I then wrote a letter to them who denied knowledge of the problem and asked me to reply with my issues. Every letter after that was ignored which toally wound me up. After speakign to a friend who stayed there, they had the same problem and same poor treatment of ignoring the complaint from the management.

thank goodness I wasnt part of a wedding as it would ruin the whole experience

Gorgeous historical building, beautiful food, highly recommend.

I booked this hotel for my wedding and was very pleased overall. We reserved all of the rooms for our guests and had the whole hotel to ourselves for the day.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful, they have an on site wedding coordinator who helped us arrange the day and she helped us out with seating plans, decorations etc.

The food was gorgeous, the only complaint (from my mother) was that there was no mention of onions in the menu and the mashed potato had spring onion in. There was a lot of choice at breakfast the next morning also, with a full English on offer or continental, they use local produce and it was of a very high quality.

The hotel is in a beautiful location in Northumberland, quite a drive in the country but lots of scenery to enjoy. Its not a castle but dates back to medieval times and looks the part so its perfect for a fairytale style wedding.

The bridal suite or the library room is lovely too, it has its own staircase and lovely old leaded windows with beautiful views. The ensuite is a bit on the small side however the room makes up for it with a huge four poster bed, beautiful fireplace and complimentary champagne and strawberries.

We returned a few months after the wedding for Sunday lunch and the service was just as good and the food even better.

In my opinion the hotel is very expensive for a three star hotel, over £100 per person per night. We plan to return but it will probably be on our 10th anniversary.

      Needs renovation and cleaning.

The Otterburn Tower Hotel is located in the town of Otterburn in the Redesdale valley in rural Northumberland in the north east of England about twenty five miles from Newcastle,

The original building dates back to the 11th century and I suspect that was the last time the room we had was cleaned judging by the amount of dust in the room. Every nook and cranny even those just slightly out of eyesight was coated in a thick layer of dust, there were cobwebs on the otherwise quite nice bed and even the bathroom wall. On the floor behind the bedside tables the dust was so thick it was black, furniture in general looked tired and worn out.

As we were in the area for a wedding another friend of mine was also in the hotel and reported that his room was quite dusty as well. I might not have been so annoyed but the double room we had was £130 for one night. My annoyance was further compounded by the fact we asked for the late breakfast which is clearly stated in the hotel information but is not available on a Sunday.

There were however some good points, the staff were all very friendly and courteous and the location itself is superb and the building is full of character. The breakfast of fresh local produce (fantastic local sausages and black pudding) was pretty good, although toast was cold. When we complained at checkout the receptionist was very apologetic and promised to have our complaints resolved.

It's such a shame as the building and staff are wonderful, it is sorely in need of refurbishment, but it seems the hotel is being operated on a shoestring to maximise profit. People criticise budget hotels for being, sterile and clinical, but at least they are clean and that's more important than character.
