I recently found myself staying at the Marriott in Grantham when the union course I was attending could not provide accommodation at the training centre due to the numbers attending and to be honest I was not complaining as I expected both the accommodation and the catering to be of a better standard than the training centre and I was not to be disappointed and this more than made up for the inconvenience of myself and about 25 other colleagues having to share taxis in the morning and evenings.
The hotel is located just off the A1 taking the exit for the A607 and the hotel is just off the second roundabout. It is located on the edge of an industrial site so there is no other amenities close by and the hotel is about one and a half miles from Grantham train station. There is plenty of car parking at the hotel.
The reception area is large with a decent size desk, as soon as it was obvious that a lot of us were arriving at the same time extra staff soon appeared to help the receptionist and in all there were three staff members covering the desk and I was impressed with not only how quickly they responded but also the fact that the greeting was polite and very efficient with only the need for a quick signature on the registration form.
I was given the option whether or not I wanted to swipe a card through as it would both speed up my checking out and also mean that I could purchase drinks from the bar after 11.30 as after that time the bar staff do not accept cash. Needless to say it was the latter reason that was most appealing. Check in is anytime from 2.00pm and you need to checkout by 12.00pm
All of the rooms were on either the ground or first floor and although this would mean carrying bags up stairs there was a porter available however during my two day stay I did not recall seeing a lift which would have meant some guests who are frail would struggle with the stairs to the first floor and would need to ensure they book in to a ground floor room.
In total there are 89 rooms offering a variety of options. The hotel is certainly aimed at the business traveller and it has ten meeting rooms available as well.
My room was a double and it was nice and spacious with apparently an extra king size bed according to one of my colleagues, it was certainly large enough to comfortably hold myself and the three young ladies I lured back to my room on the second night and after they left there was plenty of room in which to sleep horizontally without my feet dangling over the edge. The room had plenty of hanging space and storage space for luggage as well as an ironing board and trouser press.
There was a large TV with the basic terrestrial channels, two 24 hour news channels and three sky sports channels with pay as you go movie options as well as three radio stations. The rooms had wifi reception and a writing desk come dressing table as well so it was a good set up to do some work. What impressed me most was how large the room was and the fact that all of the fixtures and fittings were very new and very clean.
The bathroom was quite large as well however it did not have an extractor fan so it got very steamy when having a shower or running a bath and also took a long time to clear making it difficult to shave using the mirror as it took ages to clear. There were plenty of towels and they were of a good quality as well.
Sleeping at night the bed was really comfortable and the hotel was very quiet, he only big negative was the lack of air conditioning in the room and even in the relatively cool summer temperatures the room was too hot, it was possible to open the windows slightly however these were restricted and did not allow much air to circulate plus my room backed on to an inner patio area which was accessed from the bar and which was where all of the smokers gathered. I noticed that the smell of smoke had reached my room when I returned to it later in the evening after dinner and a couple of other guests commented on this as well.
The quality of the food was very good and I enjoyed two evening meals and two breakfasts in the main restaurant which was large and well illuminated with natural light from the surrounding windows and skylight.
The evening menus were varied and the food was of a good quality including the vegetarian options. I also liked the fact that on the second night different cutlery was used with square plates replacing the oval ones of the night before. I was particularly impressed with how friendly and efficient the staff were and in fact one of the funniest lines of the stay came from one of the waiters when one of our group owned up to borrowing a fork. In all the staff came across as being very relaxed and well trained.
The breakfast was a buffet affair with a range of cereals, fruits. Cooked food and continental options and basically you could help yourself to as much or as little as you wanted with a chef on hand to prepare your eggs to order.
The bar area was quite large and functional, it lacked any real charm however it did open out into a conservatory area with a patio outside however this proved to be the domain of the lepers, sorry that should be smokers. Drinks were not cheap but were in line with other hotel prices however I still fundamentally object to having to pay £7 for a double Jack Daniels and over £3 for less than a pint of lager.
All guests have access to the gym and swimming pool although both of these are on the small side. The pool is about nine metres long so not much good for getting serious exercise; there is also a Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room as well. The gym is also very small with only two bikes, two running machines a cross trainer and rowing machine however I is open from 6.00am so you can get some exercise in before breakfast and the most crowded it got was five people. There are also a couple of weights machine and a stretch area.
All of the rooms are fitted with a mini bar and coffee making facilities and there is a 24 hour porter service available.
My bill was paid for me as part of the course but looking at the website a standard double room is £89 per night with a superior room costing £105.00.
This is certainly a hotel well geared up for the business traveller, the gym facilities are a useful facility and there are towels provided to all users, the most impressive feature was the friendly staff both at reception and in the restaurant. The only slight niggles were the fact that the room was a bit too hot and the first booked alarm call I asked for never happened however that was probably due to the fact that I booked it through the night porter rather than at reception upon arrival. All guests get a free copy of the Times and other newspapers can be ordered.
Definitely a hotel worth staying in and of a slightly higher standard to the two previous Marriotts I have stayed in.
