Upon arriving (Ibis Paris Tour Eiffel Cambronne 15ème) and having not checked my visa statement, I was advised that I had booked for 2 rooms on the internet and I would receive no refund, I had only received on email confirmation that I had booked the one room. Eventually the chap at the counter suggested I could spend the money (£173.91) at the bar and restaurant, which wasn't really a satisfactory solution. The next day I spoke to a lady at the front desk of the hotel, who advised that after speaking with her manager out the back, she agreed to refund the money, however I was charged again on arrival and then refunded the money, (they had already taken out the money twice when I booked online). Therefore there was no refund and I am left second guessing as to exactly what went on, as to whether this was a mistake or an attempt to get rid of the problem. They are yet to respond to my complaints and emails, sent over two weeks ago. I am writing it off, but warning any newcomers. Hotel is ok, service is ok, staff look like they would rather be somewhere else, typical of a big hotel chain, just going through the motions. I would rate it similar to a Travelodge although they have never charged me double.
I stayed in the Ibis Hotel Liverpool a few months back after spending the weekend in the City with some friends from Northern Ireland. Initally, we had checked in 'next door' to a Formula One! Now, I had never been or even heard of a formula one hotel before but a friend who booked it said she had stayed there before but and it was 'basic but clean', why not I though as a room for three was costing £33 per night. Anyhow, on arriving at our accommodation we were there for approx. 10 minutes before making our way to the Ibis next door. I think Formula one and Ibis are part of the same chain because when went to ask if there was any chance we could transfer to the Ibis instead, the staff at Liverpool had no problem with this and said as long as we didnt mind paying the extra fee (which was about £30 extra a night) that was fine, so we did. The accommodation in the Ibis was fine - as long as you aren't expecting The Savoy. The room we had held three people with a double bed and one full size single (rather than a camp bed type thing). It was clean and tidy and the room as equiped with a multi-chanel Television, internet facilites and a massive bathroom with the best power shower I have ever used. The Ibis in Liverpool is located on the docks, about a 10 minute walk from Lime Street Station so it is a perfect base for exploring the city and only cost us about £3 for a taxi home after a boozy night out! The staff there were amazing - so friendly and didn't loose their patience once when dealing with the demands of three drunken twenty somethings. I would defintely recommend staying here on a trip to Liverpool, the extra £30 per night was nothing when you comapred the standard of accommodation we got compared to what we had booked!
One of my friends is getting married soon so for her Hen Do she opted to go to York. She knew which weekend she wanted to go but booking the accomodation proved to be a little difficult. Due to York being such a tourist trap it was either very expensive, or they wouldn't take a large party, we were 16 people. We managed to secure a booking at the Ibis York and it turned out to be very good value. It was £75 for one night for 2 people sharing a double room (would have prefered a twin but was ok). We also managed to get breakfast and their internet package included so was a good offer. The hotel is situated in a good location, it is a short walk (1/2 mile) from the town centre and about 10 minutes walk to the river. It also has its own carpark, which is invaluable in York as the parking is so expensive. The carpark isn't large but it is free and all of us who wanted to managed to get a space. The hotel seems to have been recently decorated and had a nice contemporary bar. The rooms were clean, if a little small as was the bathroom, the only quirk being that the hot water in the shower was the opposite way to what it was labelled. The staff were quite friendly, they didn't go out of their way but there were certainly no problems. The breakfast was accetable, I wouldn't suggest it was the best I have had, although it is served for a long time, from 9.00 - 12.00 and we rocked up about 11.00 so the best was probably gone! Overall, it was clean, comfortable option near to the centre, I would recommend it.
I stayed at the Ibis Hotel in Lincoln and I have to say i cant fault the hotel in general. Having travelled to Lincoln for a friends wedding I was orginally meant to stay in the Pride of Lincoln which I did for one night only to be told that they had double booked some of the rooms and some of us would have to be transferred to the Ibis hotel across the road, which was a great inconvenience as the wedding took place at the Pride of Lincoln and we would be away from the bridal party. Upon arriving at the Ibis I found the staff to be extremely pleasant and helpful. The room itself was spacious and had everthing you could possibly need including internet access (which you had to pay for £9.99 for 24 hours but this also included movies etc on the t.v). It cost £51 a night to stay there. They also had a selection of food and snacks which were available 24 hours a day at reasonable prices which you could eat in the bar or take to your room. There was a great deal of information available in the hotel on the surrounding area and things that were available to do. The lincoln hotel is situated about 20 minutes from the centre of the town and on mon-fri there is a bus which you can get although on weekends you have to get 2 buses which is a bit of an inconveniance or alternatively it cost £7 in a taxi from the hotel to the centre of town. Although the hotel seemed to be situated in a housing state with another hotel and restaurant across the road there is nothing else near by and so if anything is needed a trip into town wouold be essential
IBIS Stevenage Hotel - Danestrete, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, SG1 1EJ - 98 Rooms Quality of Rooms - Terrible Standard of Service - Terrible Quality of Food & Drink - Good Quality of Facilities - Poor I was starting a new job in the Stevenage region some time ago and needed somewhere to stay on a temporary basis so it seemed logical for me to select somewhere of reasonable price. Ibis seemed to fit that bill - It was £47 a night with continental breakfast being £5.50. I booked in for a 3 night stay. From the outside it just seems to be a standard chain hotel, nothing spectacular. Expectation was that it would be fairly minimalist but clean and friendly. The guy at check in was very friendly and helped me register my details - he was consciencious and helpful. A credit to the company. However this is where the pleasantries stopped. The lift up to the rooms was rickety and felt like it was going to stop working at any moment - it was ancient. After the little lift scare I found my room. I entered the room and all seemed fine until I looked in the bathroom which to my utter disbelief was dirty: The bath/shower had what looked like mud on the bottom of it and the toilet looked like it needed a good clean too. I am not really a confrontational sort so kept my feelings to myself. Cleaned the bath and got on with my stay. Except I was woken up at 4am by drunks at the hotel who were running up and down the corridor - how nice? On my second night it was the night when there was the earthquake in the Uk (which I now laugh about) so I was a little shaken up and went down to reception. I tried to make conversation with the night receptionist and bought a bottle of coca cola off of him. When I asked if he felt the earthquake he laughed at me and said "oh I am so scared, can't you see that" in a really sarcastic manner which I wasn't really in the mood for. He was quite rude in general to people while he sat on his overweight lazy behind looking smug. This whole thing soured my stay. I do not wish to be entirely negative as a major plus however for the hotel is it's food. The breakfast is excellent and healthy. Lots of variety to it. The breakfast is pretty much exclusively Continental which will not please everyone in this country but it did the trick for me - it was very filling and satisfying. On the whole i'd say pay a little extra and get yourself a much better quality service or just be better organised than me so you do not need to rely on hotels. The likes of Premier Inn are probably a better option if you have the means - if not then Travelodge hotels are a better budget alternative to IBIS. On a further note - After the stay I sent a letter to Accor about my stay and told them that I would be cancelling my cheque to them because the service I recieved was so poor. In true form IBIS passed this on to a debt collection agency so I am recieving letters regularly saying that I will be taken to court and all the other usual knucklehead threats like my assets (not that I have any worthwhile) will be seized. So even though I had a miserable stay so rightfully witheld payment - I am the one who is make to suffer again. Grr.. I am so incredibly angry when I think about them.
I've used Ibis hotels many times, especially in France where they are quite prolific. They're not exactly luxurious, but they offer a good standard of accommodation at affordable rates. I've yet to enter an Ibis room and think it was unclean, or tatty. They're almost always located either in city-centres, or close to motorway junctions. All their hotels offer "a 24-hour reception desk, a cosy bar area, snack service at any time day or night and usually a varied choice of restaurants." They also promise to solve any little problem you have within fifteen minutes - if not, the room is free. Booking an Ibis hotel online is simple - the Accor website is well laid out and easy to negotiate. Just type in your destination, click on a particular brand of hotel (or any/all), list your dates, fill in your details, and three clicks later the room is booked. If you should need to cancel, and I have frequently changed my plans and done just that, it's a matter of typing your confirmation number, click cancel, click confirm, and that's it. You can cancel up to 4pm on the day of arrival. Ibis Hotels are part of the Accor group which includes the chains of Sofitel, Mercure, Novotel and Etap, among others. They have 625 hotels with 65,964 rooms spread throughout 33 countries. http//:www.accor.com IBIS CHARLEROI AIRPORT The hotel (a 3-storey building constructed in 1999) is in the village of Fleurus, North-East of Charleroi city, and 5 Km from the airport - they have a shuttle service. Take Exit 15 on the E42-A15 motorway, and it's 300m towards Charleroi on the N29, Chaussee de Charleroi. It's a relatively busy road but, as it's essentially a residential area, the traffic is fairly light in the evening. Parking's not a problem here as the hotel has more than enough spaces for all the guests. Checking-in was swift and painless and took no more than a few minutes. We were attended to immediately and the guy behind the desk was pleasant and friendly. The reception area was clean and functional, with a few sofas strategically placed around. The restaurant and bar were adjacent, as were the stairs (no elevator). Ibis rooms come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing they all have in common is the fixtures and decor. If you've stayed in one before, you'll know exactly what to expect so there should be no nasty surprises. This one had 44 rooms - not a great deal, but we only wanted one. Our room was very clean and not tired looking in any way. As per usual, the room was decorated in the company's standard fashion - pale tangerine and light green (I know, it's sounds absolutely horrendous, but trust me, it's not nearly as un-tasteful as it sounds). There were two twin beds which were firm and comfortable, although they seemed rather on the small side to me - it might have been my imagination though, because the room was a decent size. There was shelving around, and in between, the beds - which was convenient, otherwise there would have been nowhere to keep the phone, clock/radio etc. Reading lamps were fixed to the wall above both beds. There was a work station-come-desk-come-dresser with internet link and plenty of bright, and adjustable, lighting. There was also a reasonably large, open-plan wardrobe with full length mirror, lots of shelves and adequate space to store luggage. The room had cable TV with around 30 channels in a variety of languages but more importantly for us, it had the British channels BBC1 and ITV1 - don't you just hate when a hotel's concession to English language channels amount to CNN and BBC World? The room had A/C and heating. The bathroom was roomy enough and had all the usual trappings one would expect in a room of this kind (including bath tub), a powerful shower, inexpensive, but adequate toiletries, a hairdryer, and plenty of towels gently cooking on the heated towel-rail. The bathroom was tiled throughout, as clean as a whistle, and there was a reasonable sized vanity area with a large, well-lit mirror. We were at the front of the building and, as the room was soundproofed, there wasn't much noise. I don't think Charleroi Airport operates on a 24hr system anyway, but the motorway is quite close. The facilities, such as they are, consisted of a couple of conference rooms, a small bar and a restaurant, and not much else - no swimming pool, no fitness room and no fancy night-club. We didn't try the restaurant but I must confess to sampling a beer or two in the bar, just for research purposes. As with any bar in Belgium, they had a good choice of some excellent beers. The area around the hotel could hardly be described as picturesque...even by a blind man, although the village of Fleurus has a few decent restaurants and bars. The suburbs of Charleroi consist of a sprawl of former coal mining villages and it's a rather depressed and depressing area. Charleroi city is not a whole lot better - it's one of the ugliest places I've ever seen. There's quite a bit of dereliction and the south of the city is almost entirely made-up of huge steel mills, chemical works, and forests of belching smoke-stacks. No, it's not my idea of a tourist destination. We paid 70 euros (ex breakfast) for a double room. In conclusion: This isn't somewhere I would pick to stay for a pleasure trip, but if you have an early morning departure from, or late night arrival at, Charleroi airport, then it's a good bet. A taxi won't cost more than a few euros, but as I've already said, there's a free shuttle service to and from the airport - so the smart thing to do is nix that taxi fare and splash out on a couple of beers instead. You know it makes sense. modern and clean, and has everything you need for a stopover. ©proxam2006
We visited Dublin on a budget. We flew by Ryanair (plenty of reviews available here in THAT respect!) and stayed at the Ibis for about £40 per night. It's a pretty long (if inexpensive) bus journey out of town. Location. Location. Location. It's crucially important; particularly in Dublin. This hotel is just too far out of town. You definitely miss out on the party which is quintessentially Dublin. You catch the last bus back before Dublin's excellent bars have shut. You are a party pooper in a town that parties with a particular style. Anyway. The hotel. We arrived and checked in. Dublin's an incredibly multi-cultural, multi-lingual city and the receptionist was both French and friendly. We got our key-card for our room and proceeded upstairs, ready to drop off our bags and do the voyage back into the vibrant Irish capital. The card would not open the door to our room. We trudged back downstairs and highlighted the problem. We were escorted back upstairs by no-less than the very helpful hotel manager. He couldn't open the door either - so at least I wasn't made to look too stupid! Back he went and, before you could say a very short, witty phrase, he was back with a collection of keys which beggared belief....and we were eventually in our room. And with a thousand apologies. We sat on the bed, relieved, and wearily picked up a welcome card. "If any problem is unresolved within 30 minutes," it said "you won't pay for your room". That explained the manager's frantic efforts to get us in. He had just about made it, unfortunately!!! It's a pretty good guarantee of satisfaction, in anyone's book! Ah well! We'd got in...and we'd have to pay our bill! We had a standard room, which was surprisingly spacious and very clean. The large double bed was perfectly comfortable. The ensuite bathroom was more than adequate. A large window afforded a clear - but fairly awful - view of the local suburbs, although if you looked carefully, you could see the beautiful hills in the background. There was a colour television; all fairly standard stuff. To be honest, you really couldn't complain - and certainly not at the very decent price. To really enjoy Dublin, you don't just sit in your hotel room, anyway. There's not much of a restaurant at the hotel but, in Dublin, there are a multitude of great places to eat and you'd probably really regret missing out by eating in your hotel. We skipped breakfast at the hotel, too, and stumbled upon Bewley's Oriental Tea House - an absolute gem of a place (and, rightly, quite an institution in Dublin) where we had a superb Irish cooked breakast at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended option! We ended up having a really great time in Dublin. It's an absolutely superb city with fantastic, welcoming pubs (yes, the Guinness DOES taste different over there) and really friendly people. Dublin is breathtakingly multicultural and extremely vibrant. It's just a shame that the Ibis is SO far out that the evening had, inevitably, to be curtailed. Now we've got baby Josh, perhaps the focus has changed. I can still imagine that the location would be a huge problem. It's a shame, because - that apart - it's recommended. Dublin is a fantastic city. This was a good hotel at a very good rate and if this is a hotel by which to judge the Ibis group, then I'd say that they've got the formula right - the satisfaction guarantee is pretty daring of them and speaks volumes about their determination to provide a decent product. Ibis Hotels are a chain owned by the French Accor group. Ibis hotels are situated all over the world and there about 30 around Britain. I've stayed in 3 - Manchester, Glasgow, and this week Greenwich, London. I have never been anything but delighted with my stay, and will illustrate by telling you about my most recent. The Ibis in Greenwich is well-placed right in the centre of things at the top of Stockwell Street. It has 82 rooms (smoking and non smoking), a free car park, an adjoining restaurant, and has adapted rooms for people with disabilities. Like all Ibis's, this one looks very welcoming. The entrance is well lit inside and out, the decor is bright, modern and comfortable, and the Ibis red poppy logo is cheerfully scattered about making everything look bright, fun and lovely. I arrived at 8 o'clock in the evening and was greeted by a smiling French receptionist who dealt with me in a friendly and polite manner, and had me to my room within minutes. I got to my room to find it was no smoking, and I am an ADDICT!! I nipped back to reception to see if I could change, and the receptionist was very apologetic as all the smoking rooms were taken. I went back to my room and had just started to unpack when she called me. She had been through every single room on the computer and managed to find me one! As I hadn't been at all stroppy - it was, after all, my fault for not specifying when I booked - she could easily have done nothing, but she took the time and trouble to accommodate my wishes. All Ibis rooms are the same. They are all double, and are simply furnished in a very clean-looking modern style. Ditto the bathrooms, which are spotless, functional and stylish, and have both bath and shower. There are tea/coffee making facilities, a decent sized TV, plenty of hangers in the wardrobes, a phone point for your modem, plenty of plugs, a good-sized desk area, plenty of lights, a full-length mirror as well as a smaller one, plump pillows, a very comfy firmish bed, and more than enough room to swing a cat. And I don't know what air freshener they use but the rooms always smell gorgeous. As well as this, all Ibis's have a coffee lounge in the lobby where you can get great tea, coffee or alcohol and light snacks, and there is a vending machine on every floor with chocolate, crisps and soft drinks. Now to the best bit. Ibis hotels serve breakfast until 2 in the afternoon! It's a huge buffet until about 11, and afterwards a continental one, but 2 in the afternoon! Also, you can check in from midday and you don't have to check out until midday when you leave. Amazing! A hotel group that works for the customers' convenience, rather than expecting the customer to work for theirs! (How many places have you stayed at where you're told breakfast is from 7.30 until 8 and that's it? And that's a holiday?!) And just to show how committed they are to customer service, they promise that if you have a problem and they don't solve it 100% within 15 minutes, you stay for free! Lastly, another great bit: the prices. Prices are per room, not per person, and are for room only. (But brekkie is under a fiver) London Greenwich: From £58 to £65 per night depending on time of year. Birmingham Holloway: From £35 to £39.95 Leicester: From £35 to £42 There are currently Ibis's in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bradford, Preston, Manchester (several), Rotherham, Birmingham (several), Liverpool, Chesterfield, Sheffield, Lincoln, Leicester, Coventry, Cardiff, Wellingborough, Luton, Stevenage, London (several), Portsmouth, Southampton and Plymouth. Unbelievably, most of them have a 2 star rating, which is ridiculous. They are much, much better in terms of comfort, style and most crucially SERVICE than much 'posher' ones I've stayed in. Is something I could have been having at the Ibis hotel in Coventry last week. Only I wasn't. I've stayed in Ibis hotels in a variety of places in europe, and on each occasion, I've been very impressed with both the hotel in general, and the staff's attitude. I've stayed in an Ibis in Vienna, Boulogne, Paris and good old Coventry, and my parents have stayed in another one in Cov too. ALl of them have been great, and excellent value for money. They do vary in style, for sure, and it would be silly of me to list them in order as it's unlikely that that'd be of use to you. I would say that Ibis hotels are definitely "of their period", in that new ones are really swish (like the one in central Cov), and any ones that are ex-campaniles are very much still a campanile. Pricewise, for a night, you'll pay from 35 to 45 quid, depending on where you are and when you stay (weekends are more expensive). Breakfast isn't included. When you check in, you're very often given a card which operates your door. It's a bit confusing, but far more sensible than a massive chunky key complete with an equally huge key fob! All rooms are equipped with a nice big double bed, only I've never had the joys of a duvet, it's always been sheets, and very often there are only 2 pillows, which is a bit naff for sharing. There's an ensuite bathroom (of course!), with shower (in some cases, a bath too) with a soap dispenser, sink (complete with free soaps, hoorah), and a loo (of course). The towel situation is often rather sparse, normally one small one and 2 larger ones which are by no means huge. I've found that if you systematically hide your towels day by day you build up quite a collection as the cleaners take the visible dirty ones away, and replace with 3! Nice. I feel that this particular point justifies a paragraph to itself. The Ibis in Coventry centr e has the most divine showers! They are huge (big enough for about 4 people), with large, double doors. They are sort of "corner" showers, but are absolutely wonderful and poweful. It's worth 40 quid just for that! There's always a tv, and remote, of course, and a kettle with tea and coffee making stuff. I would recommend taking some of those little pots of milk, as the milk provided is yucky and powdered. The coffee in the last one I stayed in was nescafe and kenko, very impressive. But the tea was quite manky. Oh, and there's a 'phone and another connection if you want the internet (in the Coventry one anyway!). I've never been hot in an Ibis hotel room, as there's also very often air conditioning which you can set the temperature for, marvellous. Outside the room, you'll find a variation in services, depending on where you go. If the hotel's a big one, you'll find a nice cosy bar and resaurant. It's all very "chain restaurant"-like, but the staff are always nice and friendly. Breakfast, if you so chose will cost you just shy of 4 quid, and it's a buffet. Very nice. Now here's the reason why I like Ibis hotels... I'm 21 and don't stay in hotels very often. My (then) boyfriend and I once stayed in one in Boulogne, and the staff didn't care that I was "Miss" Nott, and were very friendly indeed. Equally, I checked in to the Ibis in Coventry centre last week (I had to stay over in Coventry as I had 2 job interviews on consecutive days), and I explained that my boyfriend was joining me, and although he was from Coventry, he'd be leaving his car in the car park. The lady didn't bat an eyelid, and when I returned to the hotel at midnight with a man, who subsequently left before me in the morning (he had to work), nobody batted an eyelid. I'm very impressed, and feel at ease with this attitude. Soem hotels rea lly look down their noses at young, unmarried couples and I feel that the Ibis chain are very good in NOT doing that. All in all, if you want somewhere nice but not very "individual" to stay, Ibis hotels are for you!
