      A fabulous stay

At the end of November - my Dad was married in Scotland. He booked the Tigh Na Mara hotel out for all the family, this included all the rooms they hotel has so I can helpfully rate the hotel as a whole. The hotel offers bed and breakfast accommodation. The hotel also has a bar/pub, and around the back is a restaurant. Both of these are open to the public. The picture which is displayed for the Tigh Na Mara isn't correct - I will attach the correct picture. Location The Tigh Na Mara Hotel is situated in Sandhead, which is a village in Stranraer, Scotland. It is within a stones throw of a stretch of sandy beach, which is unspoilt. Opposite The Tigh Na Mara hotel is a park, which consists of 2 adult swings, 2 baby swings, a slide and a see-saw. Also in the village is a Tea Room and a post office/mini-market. The rest is made up of quaint village houses, and the hotel, pub and restaurant of the Tigh Na Mara. Nearby Attractions Located nearby is the town of Stranraer, where ferries can be taken to Ireland. Port Patrick, The Mull of Galloway - which is the most Southerly point of Scotland, and Port Logan, which is home of the BBC programme "A Thousand Acres of Sky''. The area around the Hotel is very picturesque and rural Scotland at its best. ---------------------------------------------- THE HOTEL The hotel has eight en-suite rooms, which have recently been refurbished to a good standard. Four of the bedrooms are located upstairs in the hotel (over the bar and restaurant), three are situated in cottages which adjoin the main hotel building. And there is a recently converted cabin, with a decking balcony located at the back of the car park, this really was lovely and was taken by the bride and groom due to its privacy! However it was the smallest room. My Room I stopped in one of the cottages as I have a baby and needed one of the bigger rooms. My cottage had a front door on the main road (not a busy road as its the small village), once inside the hallway there were 2 interior doors leading to two of the cottages. As my brothers where stopping in the cottage next door and we shared a front door - sometimes we were able to just leave our adjoining doors open so my son could crawl around both rooms, which he enjoyed! My room had a double bed, a single bed, lots of room for a travel cot, a wardrobe, a rocking chair, another chair(!) and a chest of drawers. The flat screen TV and tea and coffee making facilities are features of all the rooms. The cottage had an en-suite with shower, laminate flooring throughout and a radiator which I could control the heat. The bed was very comfortable with a very thick duvet and thick pillows. All in all - our stay in the room was fantastic, very comfortable, homely and large. The room was very clean, and was cleaned every day of our stay with fresh towels provided. The other rooms The cottage next door was similar to ours but without the single bed, and with a bath, the same with the cottage behind us. As mentioned, the log cabin was very small, but had everything you could have wanted. The rooms in the actual hotel building where as you would find in other establishments, carpeted, very well functioning with everything you would expect, clean and inviting. Not one of our party had any issues with their rooms. Bed and Breakfast In my opinion, breakfast was scrumptious! There was a table which held cereals, fruit juices, fresh fruit, yoghurt's and milks. You could also have a full Scottish breakfast, which included sausages, bacon, egg, black pudding, mushrooms, tomato, toast and beans. You could also order hot Porridge. The staff where lovely, and if you wanted to swap items, leave them out, or order extra they where more than willing! Since our return - several members of the party have sourced the same black pudding the Tigh Na Mara used as it was so delicious. The area used for this was the smaller area of the restaurant. Breakfast was served between 7-9:30am. As it was just our party in the hotel, they were very flexible with us and allowed us to eat whenever we wanted. Prices Room Rates (Bed & Breakfast) Single:£40.00 per room Double / Twin: £60 per room Family: £65-75 per room (based on 2 adults and 1 child. Extra z-bed can be added at a supplement of £10 per room.) At the moment they are also offering 3 nights Bed and Breakfast for £110.00 per room. Excellent value for money in my opinion. -------------------------------------------- THE PUB AREA The Pub can be accessed from around the back, through the restaurant or through the front door from the village. The bar area is very small and split into two sections. The first section has the bar, with bench seating across the back of the wall and tables. The pub is very narrow and no matter where you are sat you are never more than a metre from the bar! I found this very homely and was nice to chat to the locals and the bar-staff. This area had a real, open fire so it could get quite warm in their! There was a fire-guard covering the fire. There was a TV in the bar which was on a low volume. Through to the next room through an archway as a Pool table. Toilets separate to the rest of the hotel/restaurant where also behind the bar through another door. These toilets were clean and well functioning. Prices The cost of drinks where reasonable and as you would expect to find anywhere else. Prices of beer where cheaper during the week, then went up by 30p a pint on Friday and Saturday nights. ---------------------------------------- THE RESTAURANT The restaurant is locally renowned as one of the best establishments in the area to dine. The restaurant went through extensive refurbishment in 2004, and has stylish, tasteful décor and furnishings. Its very homely and welcoming. It is split into two sections - a smaller dining area for seating for 2-6 people (also used for breakfasts), and a larger area which is for large parties, this area also includes the bar, and sofas for guests waiting for a table or enjoying a after meal drink. Lunch at the Tigh Na Mara is served between 12 - 2.30pm. An A La Carte menu is available or they offer a "Light Bite" menu, which includes items such as sandwiches, toasties and home-made soups. Dinner is served between 6-9pm and an extensive A La Carte menu is offered as well as other seasonal specials. We had our own table reserved each night for our party of 18, and orders were taken at the table when dining. The speed of which the food was brought out was amazing to say everything was freshly cooked. I tried mostly everything on the menu (our family like to try each other's food!) and was not disappointed, everything was tasty, in large portions and very well presented. Most of the food is local, and the quality can be tasted. There is also a full wine menu and a children's menu. Prices The starters are prices between £3.50 - £6.00, and the mains £8.00-£13.00. This was excellent value for money, as everything was so good. An example of the menu: Starters: Homemade soup and roll - £3.50 Deep Fried Camembert In A Beer Batter with a Cranberry Relish - £5.50 Tartlet of Mushrooms, Smoked Bacon & Chicken with Garlic Cream - £5.50 Mains: Seafood Pancake served with a White Wine Sauce - £10.75 Supreme of Chicken Stuffed With Haggis In a Creamy Drambuie Sauce - £10.95 Roast Rib of Galloway Beef, Yorkshire Pudding And Gravy - £9.75 A lovely meal - and i'd recommend to anyone. Children's meals were priced at £3.95 The restaurant had its own toilet facilities, baby change and disabled toilets. Again, all clean and well functioning. ------------------------------------ ACCESS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Any special requests such as allergies, wheelchair access, dietary requirements etc must be requested before your stay. The room in which I stayed did have wheelchair access as all on one level - however I assume some of the unnecessary items would be taken out of the room to gain more space. There where ramps leading to and from the restaurant from the back of the building where the car park was situated. The gravelled car park had room for around 10 cars, and the main road could also house several more vehicles. Also included around the back near the car park is a beer garden. Pets are allowed in certain rooms - again I'm assuming these are the cottage rooms which have their own front doors as these won't disturb other guests or have to traipse through the building to your room! The hotel had 3 high chairs available. All areas of The Tigh Na Mara are non-smoking. STAFF Every member of staff I encountered was very friendly and polite. They would sit and chat, all very personal. As we had the whole hotel we had a lot of dealings with the manager Neil. He was on call to us if we ever needed anything, very helpful and on the last night bought all of our party a drink - which was a lot! He allowed us to have the main area of the restaurant just for ourselves on the night of the wedding so we could hire some entertainment. The staff rearranged all the room, manned the bar for us all night - all very helpful. Needless to say the staff where all tipped very well - including the cleaners and chefs as everyone of them gave us a weekend to remember. WOULD I RECOMMEND? YES YES YES! I had an excellent 3 days, and we are hoping to go back in February for another 3 day break. It was amazing value for money, had a great time, and I'm amazed the Tigh Na Mara only has 3 stars!
