A decent hotel for that airport stay

Myself and my husband have recently come back from a trip to Venice. Although we live right by Manchester airport we found we would need to be flying from London and so ended up staying the night before in the Holiday inn Gatwick. This is my opinion on the hotel as I was quite pleased with the place and thought it would be worth recommending to others who may need an airport hotel at Gatwick.

      Booking:
I booked my room over the phone - I had no choice to do it this way because I receive discounted rates that are only book able over the phone. However it was very quick to get through, easy to book and the gentleman I spoke to was very pleasant. I did not have to give and card details but, I believe this is because they hold them already in my priority club profile. No payment is taken at the time of booking but, if you do not cancel by 1pm on day of arrival you are charged one nights stay so all in all a good service is offered as you are not immediately tied to the reservation should an y unforeseen circumstances arise. In my case it did as I had originally been booked to stay at the Holiday Inn Heathrow but, changed to Gatwick because of flights and was not charged for the amendment as it was done before 1pm on day arrival and the gentleman I spoke to the second time was also very pleasant and quick to help. I cannot fault the booking service at all so give them a thumbs up for this - plus once booked I am able to view it online in my profile.

      Getting to the hotel:
We arrived from Gatwick airport and on the lower forecourt at north terminal we were able to ring, free of charge, for the shuttle bus to come and collect us . However this is not always needed as the buses run every 15 minutes to and from the hotel anyway. Once the bus has arrived you pay the driver direct for the journey which is £3 per person. The bus takes just over 5 minutes to get to the hotel as it briefly drops passengers off at the Mercure hotel next door, prior to going to the Holiday Inn. The buses operated are the one level long buses so can easily accommodate a lot of passengers in one go.
Alternatively if arriving to the hotel by car it can be reached by junction 9 of the M23.

      Checking in:
When we arrived we were asked for my proof that allows me my discounted rooms. Stupidly I had forgotten it and advised the girl on the desk of this - she advised she was able to check me in anyway because I had my priority card and this shows my previous reservations using my discounted rates. I can't tell you how grateful I was! After this slight glitch I informed her I would like to pay for the room upfront so that we could leave quickly in the morning and my money was taken for the room. She issued us with key cards, gave us directions to our room and advised of the bar and restaurant locations should we wish to purchase food and drink. All in all a very quick check in service although we were only the second customers in line.

      The room:
The corridors to the room were lovely and bright which thought was good as nothing worse than a horribly dark corridor to find your way down especially of an early morning or late night! Upon entering the room, which was done quickly and easily by the card key, we both came to the impression that the room was quite nice. Compared to the last Holiday Inn we had stayed at in Bolton, this room was definitely on the bigger side and although this time we did get a non smoking room, it was still nice to see that the windows opened further too giving us some fresh air.
The bathroom was immediately to our left hand side as we entered and was a nice enough one with white tiles, a tub and shower over it. The bathroom was more importantly spotlessly clean and the adequate toiletries provided. The wardrobe was facing the bathroom door and at the side of the this were the tea and coffee facilities. The bed was a decent sized double and as normal for most hotels a desk was provided where the TV sat. A small extra table was next to the large windows with only 1 chair though, which seemed a bit odd in a double room along with the room service menu and also the usual pad and pen. The bed was fairly comfortable and although only two pillows were initially on the bed, the wardrobe contained a further two.
Overall I could not fault the room - we were on the ground floor which I am not really a fan of but, for 1 night it is not a major issue. The bed was comfortable enough to sleep on and the room was spacious enough not to feel cramped. The windows were large which gave the room an even more spacious feel to it and there was enough tea and coffee provided with more requested from reception free of charge with no problems at all.

      Bar and restaurant:
The hotel has one bar and one restaurant which are located across from the reception desk. We did not use the restaurant itself instead choosing to eat a lighter meal whilst enjoying a drink in the bar. The bar is named 'The hub' and seemed to aptly suit it's name the evening we were in as it was very busy with what looked like mainly some kind of business group and plenty of travellers who like us, were probably staying because they had a flight in the morning. We both ordered a drink at the bar along with our food of which I had a lovely chicken and pesto baguette served with crisps and a salad. My husband ordered a prawn sandwich which he commented on was very nice too. We also ordered a side of wedges to share between us which were piping hot when they came to the table and very nicely done.. The baguette was actually very nice and I commented to my husband that I could another as it was so nice!

      Checking out:
The morning after our stay we were able to check out very quickly due to having paid the bill the night before. We simply handed over our card key and we were done! We no charges to our room we were checked out in less than a minute. We did leave very early and only saw one other couple however, it made the process so much quicker having already paid the evening before!

      Price:
I paid just £39.50 for our room for the night for the two of us. This was without any breakfast but, this was not an issue for us as we actually left the hotel at 5am and breakfast then would not have been something we would have. If you do wish to eat breakfast it is £13.50 per person or if paying upfront for two in the same room it was advertised at £15 which of course is a much better deal! Breakfast is served though from 6am normally so if you have got an very early start it is not always worth getting the breakfast option. For the price I believe it was worth it especially as this is an airport hotel.

      Overall opinion:
I was quite pleased with this hotel and would definitely stay here again should I need to stay overnight at Gatwick - we have stayed before in one of the other Gatwick airport hotels, the Worth, but, this is definitely better as the atmosphere in the bar was much nicer and the rooms more modern. Plus it is much closer to the terminals. We never experience any noise disturbance either which of course is another plus pointI was chuffed with the price of our room as normally for those dates you would be looking at rates of around £59 minimum. I like how bright the hotel as it doesn't feel grubby and the staff I came into contact with were all very nice. Overall a very pleasant stay and a hotel I would highly recommend.
