I recently stayed over night at the Holiday Inn in Fareham, Hampshire as we had our works Christmas party there. I had quite a way to travel so my boss paid for me to stay over which is good as I checked the prices and for a double room their current rate is £83.00! This is for the room only and I think it's a bit expensive.
This Holiday Inn is located in Fareham which is in Hampshire. It is located approximately five minutes from junction 9 of the M27. There is plenty of free parking next to the hotel and even though this was a busy night I had no trouble finding a parking space.
The hotel was renovated in 2006 so it all has a nice fresh feel about it. This renovation took place after the hotel was struck by lightening! I was living just up the road from the hotel at this time and the damage was extensive! I counted my blessings that night!
There is a big lobby which is very welcoming and a large reception desk. The receptionist was very friendly and check in only took five minutes.
Once I had walked down the seemingly never ending corridor I found my room. There are no keys, just a credit card style slot which you put your card into then the door opens. Much to my frustration this took a few attempts! I was amazed that I had no problems though later in the evening after a few bevies!
The room was spacious and very clean. There was a choice of pillows for me to choose from their 'Pillow Menu', I opted for the feather ones. There was also a large TV in the room with options to pay per view films and even Playstation games!
A kettle was in the room complete with mugs and a selection of drinks including tea, coffee and hot chocolate. There were no biscuits though, spoilsports!
The bathroom was also clean and there was a large selection of clean towels. I didn't particularly like the plastic 'sucker' anti-slip bath mat though! It looked like something my Nan used to have in her bathroom! The tiles also were a bit dated but it was clean which is the main thing for me. Complementary shampoo, shower gel and soaps were by the sink. Why do we feel the need to take these home with us?!
The room was a bit cold so I found the thermostat in the room and put the heating on. There was also an electric heater in the room which warmed the room up really quickly.
We all had a three course dinner and I cannot really fault it in anyway. Parsnip soup was my chosen starter. This was nice but was lacking seasoning, nothing I couldn't sort out with the old pepper grinder! Main course was good old fashioned turkey! The meat was lovely and tender and the vegetables cooked to perfection. The meal finished off with Christmas pudding which was also very nice.
The food was served very promptly and the wait between courses was just right. The waitresses were very attentive and readily available to take our drinks orders (there were many!).
After stumbling into my room at some ungodly hour I was pleased to find that the bed was very comfortable. My choice of pillows was also approved by my drunken head! At the foot of the bed there seemed to be a throw for the bed. It was a bit chilly being the middle of December so I went to pull it up but was horrified to see it was just for show and only about a foot wide! All that was on the bed was a couple of sheets with a thin blanket in between! There were no other blankets in the room so I was a bit cold in the night!
As with most hotels you can hear everything going on in the corridor! I couldn't hear any noise from the adjacent room or above me but the noise from the corridors was very disturbing! Ever drunk person seemed to collapse right outside my room! I didn't really get much sleep!
I was pleased to know that you do not have to check out until midday from your room. I took full advantage of this as was concerned about being over the drink drive limit in the morning so postponed driving for as long as possible.
My boss put all the drinks on my room and gave his card details the night before to pay for them. Unfortunately the receptionist didn't look through the paperwork and tried to make me pay for the drinks tab (nearly £1,000!!). One quick call to my boss and the dilemma was solved, needless to say I developed a couple more grey hairs!
The receptionist was very apologetic and check out was smooth after this. A couple of my colleagues took my door card so they could get some more drinks from the bar as I was the only resident. They didn't return my card as promised so I couldn't have breakfast so unfortunately I cannot review this........buggers!!
The room was nice but nothing special. I think that if I had paid for the room myself I would have been disappointed as it was not cheap! The food however was really very good as well as the service. All the staff were polite and friendly.
I would certainly recommend this hotel if money is no object to you. There is a Travel Inn just up the road and I suspect that they would be cheaper than this. It may be worth while looking out for special offers.
