Hilton Hotel Newport
CHEPSTOW ROAD, LANGSTONE, NEWPORT NP182LX, UNITED KINGDOM
I booked this hotel as we had some Hilton points to use and I had booked the hotel in Newport East for the night before. That hotel was cheaper so I used our points for this one thinking it would be a better hotel as it was quite a lot more money. Had I known then what I know now I would have booked two nights in the Newport East hotel as it was in a different class altogether and far superior to this one.
This hotel was slightly closer to Cardiff than the previous one so it seemed a good idea to move slightly closer and as I said because it cost more I was expecting an upgrade rather than the down grade we actually got.
This was obviously is a pretty old hotel and is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It is in an area with various offices and a sports complex which guests of the hotel can use apparently. The car park is a short walk from the hotel entrance and is shared with the sport complex I believe. As it was raining when we arrived I ran up to ask about parking, sneaking past the queue of coach passenger checking in individually. We could not get our car near the hotel under the roof to get our case out because the coach was blocking the area. We had to pull our case up from the car park I the rain.
The building is old but this part of the hotel looked quite good and welcoming apart from the queue of people waiting to check in. WE sat in some of the comfortable chairs to wait until they had checked in. When I finally got to the desk I handed over my reservation print off. The young lady was lovely, friendly and helpful and gave me our key cards. She informed me that there was free wifi in that area but not in the room which I though was miserable.
This reception bar, restaurant area had a nice open feel about it with a central fire place. There was a cafe/cake shop in the area and lots of places with comfortable chairs wher you could sit and have a cuppa, maybe get a drink from the bar and then go into the restaurant.
After I was welcomed and I was asked if we would like to put a credit card on the room in case we wanted to add drinks or food to our room bill. We did, then I completed a form with car registration and the girl took the money for the car park so that the ticket would be validated ready for our departure the next day. I believe we paid £3 for the night which wasn't bad but still out of a town I would not expect to pay for parking at a hotel.
There didn't appear to be a lift so we walked up the stairs which were old fashioned wooden looking stairs. The corridor was carpeted and had a tired rather dated look about it.
This had a double bed and a unit with a TV and a kettle with tea making bits on it. On either side of the bed was a bedside table and there was one comfortable chair and a small table with a chair to work at if you were prepared to pay for internet access which I wasn't.
The room was huge and rather empty looking with a rather tired looking carpet. The bathroom was small and pretty basic and to me looked like something from the 1960s in need of a good upgrade. There was a bath and shower over it, a toilet and basin but somehow it all just looked dull and dated and the room was dark and dismal.
I did have hairdryer for using to dry my hair and there were small bottles of toiletries but nothing that exciting,no posh brand names to get excited about.
We had eaten lunch out and having read the menu and seen the prices we were a bit fed up about the manky room so decided to just have what snacks we had with us and not bother giving the hotel any more of our money. We had fruit and biscuits as well as drinks so we were quite happy with those
There was no safe in the room and apart from the wardrobe and strange unit where the TV sat there was very little storage. I am not sure what guests this hotel is aiming for but I would think any business traveller would not return in a hurry and families would find it expensive and the room had no extra sofa bed. Maybe the coach parties provide their main guest numbers. I can assure you we will NOT be staying here ever again.
The bed was not comfortable, the pillows hard and thin and the room was so dark I struggled to read in bed or at the table. I struggled to find an extra socket to plug in my laptop and had to unplug one of the two standard lamps which gave off a rather dull light.
WE chose not to pay £10 each for breakfast as I really do not eat that much. We checked out easily and quickly and made our way to Caerphilly where we had a very nice breakfast in a cafe near the castle for less that £10 for both of us
Had I known how crummy this Hilton was going to be I would have booked two nights Hampton by Hilton at nwport East where we had spent the previous night. The Hampton by Hilton modern hotel was the cheaper of the two which amazes me.
