Prior to last summer's holiday I spotted the Hilton at Gatwick, for £85. It walking distance from the South Terminal, when most hotels required a shuttle bus. The deal was room only and available at short notice.
I arrived at Gatwick by train, the station is next to the South terminal. It took six minutes to walk to the hotel. There was no queue at check-in which was efficient.
My double room had an en suite with bath and quality toiletries. I had a camp bed as well as a double, but otherwise everything was pretty standard – TV, tea/coffee facilities etc. The window was tiny but the lights were good with convenient switches by the bed. I spotted one spare plug socket. Wi-fi is available for a charge, but is free in the communal lobby areas.
There are various food options in the hotel but on the pricey side. There is a Costa Coffee by the entrance (1st floor), I went to Amy’s bar where I had an open sandwich with chips for £12. I also ordered a vodka and diet coke (large measures seem to be standard), bringing the price up to £22 including service. Other food options include the Sports bar, Amy's Restaurant and Garden restaurant.
There is a small shop containing a limited selection of paperback books, newspapers and magazines, cigarettes, sweets, basic toiletries and gifts.
My room had an adjoining door to the next room (not accessible), but this meant sound proofing was very poor and at 4am I could listen to my neighbours’ conversation. The 5 foot bed was not hugely comfy, it was soft and I seemed to find a dip.
One thing I was disappointed with was cleanliness. As I was getting into bed with bare feet, I could feel gritty bits on the floor, and found a few small stones. The grout around the shower was looking tired and there were rust marks around the plughole. When I checked out, I reported the issues and the receptionist seemed shocked and apologetic and said she would speak to housekeeping.
Overall I was disappointed with a number of aspects, most notably the cleaning. Other issues include the noise caused by the door to the adjoining room. The food is expensive, but cannot fault the quality. The communal areas are comfortable and not intimidating if dining alone. On the positives, my room was pleasantly decorated, well-lit and mostly comfy. Location wise, this would also be at the top of the list, particularly if flying from the South terminal. I am hesitant to recommend the hotel, as I am unsure I would stay here again. However, it is worth considering if you get a good deal as airport hotels are generally pricey due to a captive market, and it is one of the best located hotels at Gatwick South.
My husband and I stayed at the Gatwick Hilton prior to and on return from our holiday, in Sept 2012.
I had initially checked website prices and booked my first night with 9 days parking for £159.00, but for the straight forward night on return rang the hotel direct and got the double room for £69.00.
Priced seemed very reasonable, but I guess the question is about value for money and I didn't think it was great.
We took the 5 hour drive from Plymouth and arrived at the hotel. There about 10 parking spots for temporary stop off, so we pulled in there. No trollies, or assistance, so we lugged all our heavy bags up a long flight of stairs. Escalator not working. There were lifts, but husband lift phobic.
We are Hilton Honours members, so as reception queues so long went to HH check in. Big mistake, as this was the worlds slowest desk. When we got to front a very curt, almost arrogant guy proceeded to check us in. I was really shocked at his attitude. Asked if we wanted upgrade for£10.00 which we took, plus 2 breakfast vouchers at£10.00. A saving of £8.00 pp.
Parking isn't that easy. Not on site, so drive to long stay, and get a bus thru to south terminal, then walk thru to hotel. Took me about 45 mins in total. Had the same process on return. Just a bit of a pain, so much easier to park on site or valet park.
Again, no sign of a porter or trolley, so lugged bags a long way to new annexe.
The room looked very nice, modern and clean, if not huge. Tv, mini bar( be warned it has a sensor, so don't touch if you aren't buying)
Feather pillows though, so had to ask housekeeping to bring foam as allergic to feather. Bed hard, and I really couldn't say it was that comfie. Nice bath/shower, with toiletries there for you.
I didn't like the fact you can't open window, ESP as I felt room was hot.looked at AC and fiddled round.
Thought it was me and hubbie being dumb.
Went to bed and wake about 1am roasting. Checked AC and temp said 25oc.. Fiddled some more, but nothing changed. Went down to reception and told them, they said no one available to sort it,(fair enough) but they would send concierge to have a look. Boy, he was stroppy too, pushed a few buttons and said it would be fine in 20 mins. Strangely enough nothing changed........
Now 2am, went back to reception and asked for another room. Went to new room, straight to bed carrying foam pillows with us! And just got into bed and straight to sleep.
In the morning they apologised and took upgrade and breakfast cost off bill.
Breakfast was the standard fayre, nothing special, but ok. We didn't eat in any other of restaurants so can't comment. Grabbed a coffee from costa outlet in reception. There is a very small gym, about the size of a bedroom, no pool, or other leisure facilities.
Cash machine in reception, which didn't work. Also charges £1.75 per withdrawal.
On checkout we requested a smoking room on return.
Arrived back and strolled thru the walkway to the Hilton. Nicer check in lady who confirmed we had booked a smoking room, and sent us on our way. Had to ring housekeeping for foam pillows, and asked for an ashtray. She said, you aren't in a smoking room. Rang reception, " no not in a smoking room" they put we thru to duty manager who said no smoking rooms available. Firmly reminded him I had booked it a week before, and that its not good enough. Miraculously, they found a room. They said they'd sent up a porter to move bags. Oh no, he came and dropped room key. As hubbie had to go back to airport to pick something up, I asked porter for help, but he said he had to be somewhere else, and tutted when I asked if he could hold the door while I manoeuvred out with luggage.
On arrival at room the carpet was torn and frayed, and the bath was full of black long hairs. Why does they appear to be a culture of allowing smoking rooms to be of a lesser quality?
So 2 stays, 4 rooms, below par service and a bad taste in my mouth.
I won't be staying there again
I stayed at the Gatwick Hilton for one night prior to flying out to Dalaman in May 2011. We basically opted to stay there because we had a 7am flight out of Gatwick the following morning and therefore needed to check in by about 5.30am - and so we thought an overnight stay at the airport was the best option. We stayed in a triple room and had 11 nights car parking all inclusive for the price of £167.00. I admit that we could have found cheaper options, but I liked the fact that this hotel is connected to the terminal via a walkway and so in the morning we had little more to do than to roll out of bed and take a little stroll. We were allowed to check in after 3pm, although we got there at 2pm and the receptionist informed us that our room was already ready and so we could go right on up.
The first impressions of the reception area and lobby was that it looked like an airport hotel. It was large and spacious, light and airy - and very impersonal in a functional kind of way. I really don't mind this as as I think an airport hotel needs primarily to be functional, clean and convenient and those little extras that make the hotel personal are not really that important when you're only staying for a night in order to be close to the airport. The receptionist were polite and efficient and checked us in within a few minutes of arriving. We were not asked if we wanted help getting our luggage to our rooms, but as we only had two small suitcases, we would probably have declined it anyway.
The room was fine. I can't really get any more enthusiastic than that. It had a double bed in it and then a camper style bed (we had booked a triple) and there was enough room to walk between the beds and have a small bedside table at each side. The beds were perfectly comfortable and the pillows soft. There was air-conditioning and heating in the room that could be controlled by us. There was a large widescreen TV with pay-for-view movies. All of the furniture was of the mass-produced variety and was clean and functional, and there were no obvious signs of wear-and-tear in the room. The bathroom had a WC, a bath and a shower. The bath was a little small, and the shower controls a little stiff, but it all worked. I would have liked bigger towels - but I think this tends to be something I would like almost anywhere I've stayed! There were some basic Crabtree and Evelyn bottles of shampoo, shower gel, soap and body lotion which seemed decent quality. All in all, we were able to get a good nights sleep and that was the main thing.
There are two restaurants - although we only ate at one of them. Amy's Restaurant is in the lobby area and it was the more expensive of the two restaurants. We ate here. A meal for two people, with wine, cost us £125. The food and service (our waiter was Frank) were both excellent, but I still think the cost was pretty high for an airport style hotel. I really couldn't fault the food (I had soup, rack of lamb and then a trio of deserts) and the service from all of the staff was impeccable. I do recommend Amy's if you can afford it.
The other restaurant was called the Garden Restaurant and it looked more of a pub style restaurant. I cannot tell you what the food was like here as we didn't eat here, but I can tell you that it was considerably cheaper than Amy's.
Opposite Amy's restaurant was the Atrium Bar which served drinks, including a good selection of cocktails. However, this was also expensive. I ordered a Kir Royale and it cost about £12! There is also a Costa Coffee shop which serves the traditional Costa Coffee stuff at the normal rate.
There is a gym which is pretty poorly equipped - although every time I walked past it there didn't seem to be anyone in it and so had I chosen to use it I'm sure it would have been adequate for a night's use. There is also a gift shop which sold the traditional London tourist tack.....not really my sort of thing.
The real bonus of this hotel is its location to the South Terminal of Gatwick. There is a covered walkway that leads directly into the terminal - and it took approximately 7 minutes to walk from the hotel lobby into the departures lounge of South Terminal.
I would recommend this hotel if you are going from the South Terminal. Whilst it is true that it is a typical airport hotel, it is one of the better quality airport hotels that I have stayed in.....although you do pay more for the privilege.
As the name suggests the Hilton Hotel Gatwick is located at London Gatwick Airport. This is the only hotel that is actually located in the south terminal of the airport, it is attached to the airport by a long walkway. We use the Hilton probably about twice each year and everytime i have had an excellent stay. The hotel is located near the car parks - if your near the entrance to the airport you will see plenty of signs pointing you in the right direction.
As you enter the hotel you will walk past a costa coffee and a gym for anyone that would utilise these facilities (the gym is pretty small but does have a variety of equipment.) The main lobby area is a big square and many of the standard rooms overlook this square. Also in the lobby is the entrance to the restaurant, the restaurant looks really nice and the menu loks good. However i have never eaten there as it seems really expensive! There is also a bar, there are loads of comfy chairs around the lobby so its a nice place to ahve a drink - if your happy to pay £8 for a glass of wine! I wasnt so we didnt stay.
Over the otherside is the check in desks and concierge - there is also a small gift shop selling those typical "london" gifts. If you are a member of the Hilton Honors program there is a seperate check in desk for you. We are gold members so we use this queue but ive never noticed much of a queue there at all really.
We ahve only stayed in an executive room - which is in the 'newer' wing of the hotel but is quite a trek from the lobby. We like it as its always really quiet and we usually get a view where we can see the planes coming in to land! The rooms are quite large and comfortable. The bathrooms are great! Huge bath, seperate shower - dressing gowns and slippers are provided in executive rooms along with crabtree and evelyn bath products.
They also have an executive room serving a continential breakfast in the mornings. In the evenings for 2 hours they also do complimentary snacks and drinks which is worth taking advantage of! The drinks are normally good ( good quality wines etc).
The main perk of the hotel for me is that you are right next to the airport. We tend to walk across and get dinner there as its far cheaper than in the hotel - same with drinks. We usually stay as we can do a night before check in and get rid of most of our luggage allowing for a bit of a lie in the following morning!
Staying at the Gatwick Hilton has become part of my holiday - i find it very relaxing and i ahve an enjoyable evening and good nights sleep before a long flight the next morning. A perfect way for me to start my holiday.
The Hilton hotel at Gatwick is located at the Airports south terminal. The hotel is behind the main car park and is access by a bridge from the main terminal. I use the hotel every time we go to Gatwick for a early flight as it give us a chance to relax and we don't have to rush for our plain. If you use this hotel be sure to use twilight check in (If you carrier has it) this lets you check in the night before and miss the rush.
When you step into the lobby you will have a Costa coffee and gym on the entrance, a bar and lounge on the middle the check in on the left and restaurant on the right. Once you have checked in you will make your way up to your rooms. The rooms are basic as you are at an Airport not a major city but you do get the normal TV, hair dryer, Tea and coffee. The room are very nice and the bed nice and large, great if you like your space.
The restaurant and bars at the hotel are VERY expansive. The best thing you can do is either go back in to the terminal and go to the Gatwick Village and eat there. You can also take water or something back to the hotel room for later.
If you are luck like me and have a Hilton gold card you can make use of the free happy hour 6 till 9 in the executive lounge. You can have beer, wine, some spirits, Cheese, crisps, cold meets and some Indian selection. The have free internet, TV and papers for you to use. You can use this lounge all day but you will have to pay the expensive costs so best to wait till happy hour.
Me and my family have made this part of the holiday now always staying here and getting a great service and good nice sleep. The cost of £150 a nice is well worth it.
We booked one night at Hilton Gatwick using lastminute.com. I booked it as a "mystery hotel", which means that I did not know the name of the hotel that I booked until after I paid. Lastminute.com is selling "mystery rooms", allowing hotels to sell unbooked rooms cheaply without damaging the hotel brand.
We paid £50..00 for the room only, the rooms are normally priced at over £110.00 per night +++.
The hotel is attached to the South Terminal of Gatwick airport and it is convenient for those who have just endured a long haul flight.
The reception area is large and the night receptionist was very friendly and upgraded our room. (We arrived at 2.00 am).
The room was a good walk and involved corridors and lifts. It was a four minute walk from the reception.
The room itself was spacious and very clean with a large comfortable bed and a flat screen TV.
The bathroom was very modern and clean and had Crabtree and Apple shampoo and bathing products.
We didn't have breakfast but my husband did order room service at approximately 2.30 am. He had a beefburger and chips, which was delicous and you would expect at the £16.00 price tag.
When we planned our recent trip to Florida we tried to make things as easy as possible for ourselves. As we live on the Isle of Wight, its usually a real pain in the backside to get anywhere, let alone with any degree of comfort. We decided that rather than attempt to get up to Gatwick and got though security all in one morning, we would have a bit of 'luxury' and book a hotel at the airport itself.
Using the fabulous Tesco points system, we booked the hotel online. It actually worked out about £40 in Clubcard vouchers for the two of us per night which was a real bargain. At reception the room rates were well over £200 for those wishing to turn up on the day, which was well above what we would have been willing to pay.
The hotel itself is situated in the south terminal and is easily accessible from the train links and via the moving platforms. Its deceptively large as well, as the entrance is very small indeed.
The room was spacious with a large double bed. It was very nicely decorated with a modern wooden style to it. The room had a large TV with some digital stations. The room had a large desk with an adjacent breakfast table worth a modern chez lounge. The bathroom was clean and tidy. All in all the room was nicely furnished, but a little dark. There was no available natural light from the windows, as the room looked out onto other glass corridors.
The hotel was immense. To access the room we had to go along a very long corridor, that was so long it was reminiscent of an Escher drawing and was a perfect example of one point perspective. Although the hotel was large and cavernous, it did the job without having that 'homely' feeling.
The main lounge area had a large bar and seated area that was nicely set out. In fact, many of the rooms in the hotel had windows that overlooked this large indoor area. The hotel had a small shop selling papers and gifts, Internet access and a new coffee shop that was due to open the day after we left.
Below the main hotel foyer there was a large breakfast room that also served a la carte dinners. The breakfast in Hiltons have always been excellent, and this was no exception. The waiter attended to coffee and toast while we helped ourselves to a very large English breakfast. The breakfast was well stocked and very well cooked. Excellent for a long haul trips to the US!
A really excellent hotel experience, it lacked the 'homeliness' of a smaller place, but was clean, well kept and very reasonable. What more could you want? It was also extremely convenient for the airport and for us from the good ol' IOW who didn't want to rush up to Gatwick in the morning.
Living in Scotland has many advantages but unfortunately we often have to fly down to an English airport to get a flight to our destination, and the latest example of this entailed a stay over at Gatwick for an early morning flight to Genoa.
My husband decided that we would stay at the Hilton Gatwick Airport hotel, which is the only hotel at Gatwick Airport linked to the South Terminal by a covered walkway. It is just minutes from the North Terminal on the train and 30 minutes from central London. The Hilton does a Park and Fly package and had a car park opposite our side of the hotel. There are nearly 800 rooms and check in is after 3.00pm and check out by 12.00.
The reception area was large and airy and included the Atrium Bar/lounge. There was plenty of seating and although queues did develop they seemed to be dealt with quite quickly. We received our key card and were given directions to the lift and offered help if needed with our cases.
All rooms have high-speed internet access and there are Family and interconnecting rooms which sleep five and executive accommodation which has Executive Lounge access.
In our room there was a double wardrobe with an iron and ironing board, trouser press and an extra hairdryer. The very comfortable King size bed, had bedside cabinets, with large lamps, phone and clock radio. There were two large drawers in a long light wooden cupboard which had the television on top which also had a game controller attached. In the space below there was a tray with kettle, mugs, tea, coffee, milk and biscuits the case stand. The desk was near the long narrow window and had a large mirror above it, another phone and modem, plus lamp and a padded chair. There was a small round table which was the only item that needed replacing in the room as it was showing signs of wear and tear. Another padded armchair and standard lamp completed the furniture. The carpet was mink coloured with light green flecks, the bed linen was white with a mink velour narrow throw. There was a cream net curtain and a lovely quality green and mink striped curtain which matched the valance on the bed. There were 3 modern pictures on the walls.
The bathroom had a bath, with shower, there were white towels but unfortunately I could not describe them as fluffy. There was a large mirror above the wash basin which was set in a marble base, and of course a toilet. The toiletries provided were made by Crabtree and Evelyn and included tubes of body lotion, shampoo and shower gel, soap and a cap. There was a tissue box which contained precisely 3 tissues! The shower curtain was rather tatty looking, but it was clean.
We decided to enjoy a meal in the intimate, candle-lit Amy's restaurant. We hadn't booked but when we arrived there was plenty of room although it got busy later in the evening. We decided not to have a starter as I love desserts, but the starters sounded delicious although quite expensive, as they ranged from £7.95 to £9.50.
My husband choose Roast Monkfish on Risotto with chilli and coriander which was £21.90 and I had Pan fried Sea bass with crushed new potatoes, tomato and asparagus in a creamy dill sauce which cost £18.95. Desserts were £7.95 and were delicious! I had Mango and Coconut Bavarois with Passion Fruit cream and brandy snap basket and my husband had sticky Toffee pudding with fudge sauce and a brandy snap biscuit. Wine was £6.25 a glass, coffee was £3.30 each and there was a 10% service charge. Service was excellent and the maître d' came over a couple of times to see that everything was alright and he even knew our names! A real personal touch. Our meal cost over £80, certainly not cheap but it was delicious and we were on holiday. The Garden restaurant had a buffet meal at £24.95 so in comparison it wasn't too expensive as we had excellent service and a really pleasant meal compared to standing queueing at a buffet. They also had pizza at £10 -£12.
We had breakfast in this restaurant and although it was early on the Sunday morning it was quite busy, we were shown to a table and told to help ourselves at the Buffet and that someone would bring tea or coffee. We had fresh fruit, then my husband chose a full English breakfast whilst I had some bacon and a roll and then a danish pastry. We asked for coffee but breakfast was nearly finished before we were served. Other tables were getting restless too as they had finished their breakfast and still not been served. There were several staff about but slow to serve and slow to clear tables. There was a good selection of the usual breakfast items that we now expect, it was cooked nicely but a great pity that service was poor. Breakfast was served from 6 - 10.30 am and then all day dining from 12 -2 and 6- 10.45 with the dinner buffet from 6 -10.30pm. There was also a bar as you entered the restaurant.
Atrium Lobby Bar/Lounge
This is as you would expect in the lobby, it is large and airy as the hotel is builty around the lobby, some rooms look onto this space, I can't help but wonder if it gets noisy or if the glazing is so good you don't notice it. The bar is open 24 hours for residents and serves light refreshments.
There is a gym/fitness room on the first floor which is complimentary to all residents, but I didn't check it out as we were only in the hotel for a short time. Only over 16's are allowed and there is a water fountain and towels available.
There is a Gift shop on the first floor in the lobby selling newspapers, typical gifts from London and extras people may need.
There was an Executive lounge for people staying in Suites and executive rooms which serves a complimentary breakfast and in the evening serves drinks and canapes.
For those involved in conferences, there were several rooms and Banqueting rooms seating up to 450 people and a Business centre too.
We paid £70 for the room including breakfast, which was a good deal as I have seen it more expensive. Worth shopping around for a good price!
It was very convenient, the room was more than adequate, but had a few disappointing features. The food in Amy's restaurant was lovely although expensive, but service was poor for breakfast. Having said that if we needed to stay over at Gatwick we would probably return there as the faults weren't too bad compared to convenience, and I believe some rooms were being modernised. Come on Hilton, do some training, perhaps some modernisation and improve this hotel.
I have stayed at the Hilton hotel at Gatwick airport 4 times now. I chose to stay there because it is amazing to be able to simply get up on your day of travel and head straight to the check in desk. I have to say that I've had mixed experiences with this hotel, but on the whole it was a bad experience.
Though for my first stay I got a more luxury room (larger bathroom, ice bucket, etc), the last stay was awful. There were stains coming through the ceiling, and the tv controller was broken (and sellotaped back together, which shows the fault had been acknowledged but not properly fixed). Overall, it wasn't very clean. However, the check in staff were friendly and incredibly helpful.
I would recommend staying at one of the other hotels nearby if you are flying from Gatwick, as this really isn't up to the usual Hilton standard.
We holiday in the same place every year which involves a long haul flight, so before the flight we like to make this as comfortable and stress free as possible. We usually stay in a hotel within a 10 mile radius of Gatwick airport, but this yeat we were unable to find anything decent nearby - due to it being a last minute booking.
Eventually we managed to get a room in the Hilton, although we know the brand name we had never stayed before and hadnt expected it to be quite so expensive - £150 for two of us for the night.
However it was well worth the money. The reception area created an excellent comfortable area, and we didnt have to wait long to be seen by the receptionist. Although initially worried about being on the top floor, we needn't have been worried, there were plenty of lifts and with you within about 1 minute of being requested.
There were many porters within the reception area, offering to take bags upstairs.
There were early morning wake up calls available if needed, morning newspapers if wanted, and breakfast available - which looked very appetising although we didnt have time for any! There was also quick drop box to leave your room keys to avoid queueing at the recpetion when leaving.
All in all, despite rooms costing alot more than we had expected it was definatly worth the price and we will be staying there again next year when we holiday.
We decided to make things easy for ourselves for our main 2006 holiday, by staying at the Gatwick Hilton the night before our flight. And it was a good choice. As we drove in to the hotel, first impression were all good. They had doormen in the 'drop-off' car park directing you to an available space offering to help with luggage etc., so no complaints there. We walked in to find the lower ground floor in the middle of redevelopment, with scaffolding poles in some areas. But we needn't have worried. Up the escalator we went to the Lobby area and again first impressions were good. We had a short 2 or 3 minute wait for a receptionist to become available (this was at about 4pm on a Saturday). The receptionist was very pleasant and polite, confirmed our room booking and our HHonours and Virgin Frequent Flyer details were all on the system, and handed us our room key on the first floor.
Up to our room, and again, no problems there. It certainly wasn't the biggest hotel room I'd ever stayed in, but was perfectly OK for the two of us and the one night we were staying there. Everything was clean and tidy and how it should be, though there were a few signs of wear and tear, but nothing more than you would expect for an airport hotel with a high guest turnover. The view was non existant, we could see the short-stay multi-storey car parks, and the planes flying over the top of them! Well, to be fair we weren't expecting much more, with a hotel this close to the airport, the view were never going to be of green fields were they! Once we had settled, I left my wife to enjoy the TV while I went and parked the car in the NCP Flightpath long stay car park. This meant I returned to the hotel via the covered walkway from the aiports South Terminal.
The walk from the terminal isn't a short one, probably about 5 minutes for the average person, and leads you through a series of suspended walkways over roads, then between the short stay car parks, and over the bridge to the hotel.
We decided not to sample the high-priced food at the hotel, and instead made our way over to Garfunkels in the North Terminal for a nice meal, and McDonalds at the South Terminal the following morning for breakfast.
We had a good night sleep, the bed was comfy and we heard very little noise from neighbouring rooms or the corridor outside. Checkout was quick and easy, we just dropped our key in the box at the bottom of the lifts, and made our way to the terminal to check-in for our flight. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone who asked. It isn't perfect, but was is? It does the job well though, and while you will be paying more for the convienience (and the fact that its a Hilton), its not much more expensive than an offsite Travelodge+parking deal (I think we would have saved about £20), so for us made sense. It made the morning of the flight far more relaxing as you only had a short walk to the terminal, rather than having to drive from the hotel to a car park, then fight to get on a shuttle bus to the terminal.
