The Beauchief hotel has recently been refurbished so I decided to give it a visit last month when I went to Sheffield to visit family.
I had always heard bad reports about this hotel but the rates were very reasonable at £50 per night for a double en suite room and breakfast the following morning. It was under new management so worth a try.
It is situated on the Abbeydale Road and about ten minutes drive from the city centre so a very good location. I particularly liked the large gardens around it they were very well kept and it was a treat to have a stroll after driving for four hours in a tranquil atmosphere.
On arrival I parked the car in the rear car park; there was plenty of room with it being above average size wise.
Checking in at reception was quick and easy and I was given a room on the second floor, I did notice that the hallway carpets on this floor were a bit thread bare but I believe that they were still working to replace a lot of the carpets but my room was extremely nice with a thick piled red and gold carpet.
The bed was a king size and the television was on the corner of the long dresser positioned just right to watch while sitting in the comfortable easy chair under the window.
The bath room had beige and gold tiles from floor to ceiling and it was quite apparent that this had only just been done out. The bath and shower were immaculate and there were plenty of thick fluffy towels hanging on the heated towel rail and a further two in the wardrobe just inside the room.
There was tea and coffee facilities provided on a tray with biscuits and a couple of slices of cherry cake, I thought that was a nice touch and it tasted delicious.
I did not have an evening meal in the restaurant because I had made arrangements to eat out with friends but I did have a look in the dining room and it looked rather plush with plenty of staff milling around looking after their customers.
The menu was quite extensive with a choice of five starters and a main course choice from chicken, fish, game pie, pasta dishes and two types of steak from their griddle. Sweets also looked very tempting, home made apple pie, chocolate mousse, and a selection of the chefs specials for two to share. I was beginning to regret my prior arrangements with my friends because it all looked mouth watering and the prices were reasonable.
I decided to take a taxi into the city centre and the receptionist was more than happy to call a cab for me, actually I found the reception staff so helpful they seemed to go out of their way for you and it was nice to be treated so well, I take my hat off to the management of this hotel they have hired very polished staff and trained them to the highest degree and that is so important for a good hotel.
The bed was comfortable and the shower next morning was magnificent so after drinking a strong cup of coffee to try and get over the night before with my friends I ventured down to breakfast.
Truthfully now, it was awful, the staff on just did not want to show any enthusiasm, I waited nearly half an hour for my full English and it was stone cold with a frazzled up egg laying in a pool of dirty grease on a plate that had obviously missed the dish washer after its last use.
Needless to say I didn't eat it, I was very disappointed because my stay had been enjoyable up to that point, such a shame that the breakfast staff didn't have the same training as the rest of the hotel staff, maybe the new management have not got around to sorting this side of the hotel out as yet.
Over all my stay was nice and I think I would try this hotel again because of the cost, and the area that it is situated in. I just hope that next time there is a vast improvement in the breakfast fare.
