A wonderful venue for a wedding or even just a meal

Part of our recent trip to Scotland including attending a wedding held at Balbirnie House which is situated in the village of Markinch near Glenrothes in Fife. Having never been at this particular venue before, we were looking forward to seeing it, as its website www.balbirnie.co.uk presented some wonderful pictures. Balbirnie is a privately owned 416 acre country estate house hotel and dates back to 1777, and according to some of the literature we picked up whilst there, it is supposed to be one of Scotland's finest grade A listed houses. It is also only a half hour drive from Edinburgh or St Andrews, making it an ideal place to stay as well, if you are choosing to visit some of thos places. This county hotel has also been the recipient of many awards such as 2009 Scottish Hotel Awards - Wedding Hotel of the Year and the Hotle Review Scotland 2009 - Luxury Hotel of the Year. It also holds an AA 4 red star rating and has 2 rosettes, and also holds membership of the small luxury hotels of the world. The house itself is Georgian, and its architecture is beautfiul, and it is wonderfully decorated inside too. Unfortunately due to the weather, we were unable to walk around the beautiful gardens at the back fo the country house. Balbirnie is not just a country house hotel though, it offers a lot more than that. Within the estate, there is an 18 hole golf course as well as vast parklands with jogging and woodland walks. Balbirnie will also arrange for you to have the opportunity to so some horse riding, trout and salmon fishing, clay pigeon shooting, go carting or even croquet, with the help of some local experts. There is also plenty to offer inside the hotel too. There are 30 individually designed bedrooms all with wonderful ensuites, according to the literature, all with satellite TV. The hotel also offers 2 award winning restaurants, namely The Orangery and the Balbirnie Bistro. You can also enjoy a drink at the coctail bar in the original library and sit by the log fire. For those wanting a business meetin place, Balbirnie also offers a business centre housing 2 meeting rooms. There are also other private rooms available to hire for various functions. If like us, you are visiting Balbirnie for a wedding, you will probably get a chance to relax and eat in the ballroom, which can hold up to 216 guests for a banquet. Prices for all these various aspects of the hotel are available on their website. Although we did not stay at the hotel, we spent enough time there to appreciate the various charms of this country house. As we awaited the evening meal to be served in the ballroom, we were able to relax in some of the beautifully decorated public rooms, housing various antiques, but also comfortable armchairs. Wait staff were always very pleasant and helpful and appeared to be extremely attentive to the bride and groom's every need. Everywhere you turn at this venue you are confronted with luxury - even the toilets are luxuriously decorated. The ballroom itself, where the wedding meal was held was beautiful, and had been wonderfully decorated for the bride and groom to their tastes. The 5 course meal that we got served was delicious, and the wait staff were extremely well trained, unfolding and laying out our napkins prior to eating, and putting down dinner plates at the same time on the table. Everything was carried out with great detail and attention, and you felt you were being spoiled, and we were only guest!! Overall, although we didn't stay at the hotel, we are definitely planning to re visit it to have a meal in one of their award winning restaurants, as the food was excellent at the wedding. We would also like to spend time exploring some of the estate, particularly in the spring/summer season, and enjoy some of the woodland walks on offer. Hubby is keen to do a spot of golfing as well in the estate. I would highly recommend this country house hotel and it thoroughly deserves all its awards from all that we witnessed on the day of the wedding. A great venue!
