Galbanum essential oil (Ferula galbaniflua) was reputed to be a favourite of Moses’ and is written about in the book of Exodus whose author named it as a component of incense to use in the temple. It was also used for both medicinal and spiritual purposes - the Egyptians used it for embalming as it has a powerful preserving quality. The essence comes from a gum resin obtained from a species of fennel, which is grown in Persia (now Iran). It was used by the Romans in ritual anointings for springtime. The oil is yellow in colour and has a lovely hot, pungent, aromatic spicy fragrance, which blends well with other oriental base essential oils, including Frankincense and Sandalwood. It also blends well with some of the more floral fragranced oils such as Hyacinth, Violet, Narcissus, and Lavender. Possible Uses ------------- Galbanum is an excellent oil for treating minor skin problems such as blemishes, acne, abscesses, boils, cuts, wounds, inflammation and scars as it encourages the formation of scar tissue. I have also found that it is useful for treating bronchitis, lice, muscle aches, poor circulation, and rheumatism. It is also good for use on the face – dilute three drops in 10ml of almond carrier oil – it is especially beneficial for the more mature skin. A Note of Interest ------------------ Galbanum is used by perfume makers such as: Estee Lauder, who uses it in her fragrance “Beautiful” and in Chanel where it is used in Chanel No. 19. Caution ------- Pregnant women, babies, or young children should not use essential oils. People suffering from chronic illness or epilepsy should also steer clear. Other than for skin use, I would not recommend this oil as an essential one for your alternative medicine kit. Lavender is just as good for the skin, and easier and cheaper to come by. Where You Can Buy It -------------------- G albanum essential oil is one of the more expensive oils and can cost as much as £16 for a 10ml bottle, depending on the supplier. It can be purchased on the high street from Health Food stores such as Holland & Barrett www.hollandandbarrett.com or off the Internet from sites such as Love at Cariad.co.uk www.cariad.co.uk/essentialoils.html where you can also apply for a free catalogue of their products. Another excellent site to purchase essential oils from is www.eoco.org.uk who often run special promotions on their oils.
