Great price and style from ikea

This ikea lamp is a side or table light that is just perfect for the bedroom. I bought two about six years ago for the princely sum of under a fiver each. If I recall correctly, the bulb inside cost more than the lamp. It was actually the style not the price that attracted me. The lamp consists of four squares of frosted glass standing about 30 cm high. It is a very clean, minimalist look that i like and is fairly typical of ikea styling. The cord has an on/off switch about 40cm from the base of the light. There is a small recess on the base so that the cord can fit through snugly and the lamp is stable. Like all lamps with modern energy saving bulbs, there is a lag time between switching the lamp on and it giving sufficient light to read by particularly as the bulb is in effect boxed in by the frosted glass. However I'm really just talking a couple of minutes so its no big deal. The bulb itself is quite fiddly to access. In the time I have had the light, the bulb has never needed replacing however I have taken it out to clean as dust and the odd insect, gets trapped in the base of the lamp and on the bulb itself which doesn't help enhance the brightness. The lamp on my side of the bed is still perfect. Unfortunately my other half did knock his off the bedside table and chipped it. One of the hazards of glassware I think and not indicative of the quality of this item. In fact, I have stayed in two hotels that have had these lamps (i felt like i was at home!) so they are not that fragile! All in all, another stylish and functional product from ikea.

Another piece of classic IKEA design - idea bedside lamp

I use this as a bedside light. From IKEA, I thought PRICE I bought this lamp for around £5 from IKEA. The bulbs were a little pricier than regular bulbs, as I recall, but I have only needed to replace it once or twice and I have been using it regularly as a bedside light for around five years. DURABILITY My lamp has lasted very well and still looks new. Very sadly, however, it used to be one of a pair. Its twin got badly chipped when I was moving home. It is glass after all. SWITCH The switch is a simple on off on the wire. Personally, I would prefer it higher up, or on the lamp (like those fancy touch ones) as the wire dangles down the side of my bed and can be a bit inconvenient to reach for. GLOW This lamp does light up a room. It is a relatively soft glow but is un-angled so the light spreads to the whole of the area. It is certainly not a desk lamp, though, as you cannot angle the light anywhere. CLEANING Ahhh! Two main issues with this. Dust finds its way into the lamp as there is no "top". This is really hard to get out, even when I get the vacuum attachment down there. Also, the frosted glass casing makes it a big of a finger print magnet. OVERALL A lovely, inexpensive little light I would certainly buy again.

      Cheap funky little light

I'm a huge fan of Ikea lighting, I think that the variety and quality, and the prices are excellent. I'm forever buying lamps from Ikea and then dotting them all over the house, it's a good job we live in a big house with lots of rooms! My husband actually chose this table lamp as a bedside lamp, we only bought the one as I wanted to check the amount of light it gave off to read with first. I've made the mistake with previous lamps from Ikea that didn't give off enough light to read by. The Grono table lamp is £4.49. It is 10cm x 10cm, and 22cm high. The Grono range also has a set of 2 table lamps available as well for £12.99. These are larger in size, and there are 2 different sizes in the set, one is 12cm x 12 cm and 28cm high, and the other is 14cm x 14cm and 35cm high. As with all Ikea lighting you do need to buy the light bulbs seperately. Each size of Grono table lamp takes 1 lightbulb. There is a small amount of self assembly required with this lamp, but it is literally inserting the cord into the hole in the glass base, and then attaching the part that holds the light bulb onto this and screwing them both together. The Grono table light is made of white opaque frosted glass, it is quite thick glass and so it is fairly heavy, but even so I think that if you were to knock it over I think that it would probably smash. It stands on 4 little soft pads so that it doesn't scratch your table, and it has a groove cut out of the bottom that the power cord sits inside so that it doesn't topple over. The power cord itself is quite long, 2m, and the switch to turn the lamp on and off is located near the base of the lamp. The Grono lamp does give off enough light to read by as a bedside lamp, I think that this is probably due to the fact that the top of the lamp is open. Although is is bright enough to read by, it isn't too bright, it is still quite a soft background mood light. Although it worked as a bedside lamp I haven't gone and bought another matching one, I've actually moved it to another room now. I was a little bit wary about the safety aspects of it, we have bedside tables with glass tops and I didn't like the whole glass on glass thing going on. I had visions of one of us knocking it over and smashing both the lamp and the glass top of the bedside table. I did actually like the lamp itself though, and I have bought the matching 2 lamp Grono set, I just use them all in a room where I think that they will be safer. It is a a clean, simple and sleek, but quite funky looking lamp. It will go well with any decor and in any room.

      Ikea comes up trumps again

Anyone who has read my previous reviews will know that I'm a big fan of Ikea, and love spending an evening of my life wandering round the soft furnishings and "housey" things they have just before you get to the till. These lamps are probably one of the best known and widely owned Ikea products, at one time I think myself and all my friends had these lamps somewhere in their house. I owned two of these lamps for about 8 years, and have literally only replaced them about two months ago. They are small-ish but rectangular in shape, white on the outside but also slightly frosted looking glass, and have a switch on the lead which is a decent length. The switch makes it easy to turn the lamp on and off without scrambling round your bedside table knocking things off. The only reason I replaced ours (we had one each side of the bed on bedside tables), was because we moved to a bigger house with high ceilings and they looked a bit lost so we got lamps that would make more of a statement. I have actually kept hold of them in case I can use them elsewhere in the house, because they are so handy to have spare, and as they're quite plain they can be used in any room in the house. The thing I liked about these lamps is that they didn't take up much room on the bedside table so there was still plenty of room for the other things you'd usually have on there (magazine/book, cuppa made by other half, lip balm, jewellery and various other girly unnecessary items). They give out a good bit of light, because the bulb shines through the glass rather than being restricted by a lampshade. This means they're not great for creating "atmosphere lighting", but do give off a good standard of light. The lamps are easy to clean, and I don't remember changing the lightbulbs (although hubby-to-be does this kind of thing so don't take that to mean they never need changing!). It never seemed to be an issue with the lightbulb going often though. These lamps are excellent value for money, and cheap enough to put in every room in your house. Well worth a trip to Ikea.

I'm not buying any more Ikea lamps!

Ikea lamps have proved to be the bane of my life. I've bought several of the damn things, only to have housemate after housemate break them. Ikea do a couple of different styles in the range - this cube Grono lamp and another round, tube-like one. I originally bought the round one, but after several comments about how it looked like a hospital pee bottle and a couple of replacements later, I decided to go for this cube Grono lamp instead. Although I think the shape is a bit boring, it's more easily situated on my windowsill and I thought that there was less chance of knocking it or breaking it because of its straight sides. The lamp is available in at least two different sizes; the small one which I bought is around the £3.50 mark and is very reasonably priced. The cord is quite long, and easily long enough to reach from my windowsill down to the plug socket in the corner. Partway down the cord is a white plastic on-off switch, which is easier than reaching behind the sofa or bending down to unplug. The lamp takes a mini screw bulb, and to be honest in the couple of years I've had it I've never had to change the bulb - though this may be because we don't use it that often. However, we do have an energy saving bulb in there and it's not the brightest so I'd recommend going for a bright bulb (white if possible). We tend to use it for a bit of light so we can turn the main lights off whilst watching a film. The lamp is made out of fairly thick glass with a frosted look which prevents you from seeing the bulbs once you've screwed it on. Once switched on, you do get a concentrated area of light where the bulb is situated from behind the glass. I think the overall look is ok. It's not particularly stunning or exciting. It has the bonus of fitting in with any modern décor though, and I prefer it this way since I like the focus to be on my sofa and my clock which are much nicer. Although the lamp looks thick, it's not massively durable and I noticed several months ago that someone has managed to crack one side and most of it is broken. They've helpfully turned the lamp round so you can't see it (grrr). It's extremely sharp, and I have managed to cut my finger on it despite being super careful - and there was a surprising amount of blood. Yet again I'm annoyed that an Ikea lamp has broken. To put it into perspective, I have plenty of other things around the house ranging from vases to glass candle holders and none of these have ever been damaged despite being in places where they are much easier to knock or drop. I have to say that this lamp isn't particularly attractive or strong despite being cheap, and the light is a little duller than I would like too. However, for a guest room or rented property they would be an inexpensive solution. I'm hesitant to recommend this lamp, particularly for homes with children, but in the right house it's reasonably adequate. For my personal opinion, it gets two stars.

Love this product and would definately buy it again

This lamp is lovely and I think I only paid about £3.50 for it so it was a total bargain. I actually bought 2 of the them and the make great bedside lamps. I think it definately looks more expensive than it actually is and does not look cheap at all. It is very thick glass and feels really solid and sturdy and I don't think it would break easily. I have had mine for 4 years and they are still working perfectly and look good as new. I really like the design of this lamp it is simple and sleek and looks very modern and stylish. It is frosted glass so when you have the lamp on it gives a lovely soft effect which is perfect for a bedroom and the glow from it is very muted and relaxing and not at all harsh and glaring. It is bright enough though so that I can read in bed so is the perfect balance of light. I also really like the fact that it has a switch on the cable to turn it on and off as this is very easy to press and much easier than having to turn it off at the plug socket all the time. I cannot fault this lamp and it is without a doubt well worth the money so I would definately recommend it to all my friends.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Bargain especially with the energy saving bulbs

What a cheap nice lamp! I'm a big fan of lots of diffused lighting in rooms and on a recent trip to Ikea noticed this lamp. Suitable for a desk or bedside lamp you can buy this individually for a fiver or two similar but different sized ones as a package for £12. The lamp takes the E14 bulb which can be picked up in Ikea at the same time if you wish for less than £3 for 2 energy saving ones. These are screw fit ones but I believe they are used in a few other ikea lamps too. Very easy to install. The lamp itself is made of a frosted glass block with the power cable coming out from one side and the bulb centered in the lamp. There is a simple pivot switch on the cable so you don't have to turn it off at the socket. Using the recommended bulb I find that on turning it on the light is very dim and takes a while to warm up to a decent brightness like with many energy saving bulbs. This can be nice for when you don't want the full on brightness but frustrating when it takes 5 minutes before you can see anything. When warmed up the light is nice and diffused with some light leaving the lamp from above. Otherwise this is a great little cheap lamp for some easy room lighting and decoration.

Lovely stylish lamp for those on a budget.

I've had this lamp for a good few years now. It cost less than a fiver and I honestly didn't think it would still be working but it is! Best of all, it still looks like new and is still nice and modern looking. The quality is fantastic - not what you would expect for the price it retails at! It is a very solid, sturdy lamp. It is a coboid shape, made from quite thick frosted white glass. It has a lovely matt finish. It is definitely no statement piece, but it is classic and stylish without being too boring! This lamp has moved round a fair few rooms in my house! It just seems to match anywhere. The lamp also gives a nice ambience to a room. The light it gives off gives a nice cosy feel. I'm not sure if that is the lamp or the bulb but I think the lovely frosted glass probably has something to do with it... Anyway, at the moment mine is used as a bedside lamp. My partner likes to read in bed, whereas I like to go to sleep. This lamp is bright enough to read in, but not too bright that you can't go to sleep.

four years and still as good as the day they were bought.

I was sitting on my bed wondering what in my room is worth reviewing! I have one of these on either side of my bed and they are great! I have had them for four years now I still love them! Plugs these are fine, although it is worth mentioning I have had to change the fuse in one twice and the other once. This is an easy job and over four years not a huge problem. Cord A good two meters of cord, running under the glass into the light fixture through a dip to as the lamp sits squarely on the chosen surface. Bulb fitting - Mini screw cap. Lamp itself - frosted glass in a rectangular shape. Very durable - has fallen of bedside table onto carpet a few times and never broke. Lighting feel It gives a nice soft glow to a room. It is also possible to read by them but not suitable for something like cross stitch as it is not bright enough. Price You can pick up two fo these for less than a tenner and transform your whole lighting theme - bargain!

Timeless design that will fit into any room

We have these as our bedside lamps. They give off a really nice glow when on that looks much nicer than having the main bedroom light on and really softens the room. They also have a generous length of cord with the on/off switch wired into it so that it is easy to position it where you need it. Mine fits perfectly in the space between the bed and the bedside cabinet but it could also be saddle-mounted onto the wall. The lamp sits on a flat surface really well thanks to a small cut out at the base of the glass cover. Simple idea but I think it's a really nicely finished product. Very simple design and will go with anything. Changing the bulb is also easy even with the glass cover on - there is plenty of room to get your hand inside and twist the bulb out. Unfortunatley I have chipped my lamp on the glass at the top in the corner. I think I will probably buy another one to replace it at some stage as I really love these lamps.

          great lamp

The IKEA grono lamp is a brilliant little buy that will be great in nearly any room. The lamp is very simple, itis a single bulb inside a cube made out of frosted glass. There is a groove in the glass which the cable comes out of to keep it stable. This lamp doesn't get very hot so it is okay to use it anywhere in a room. I bought one of these lamps a few years ago and because it was so useful have bought two more since. The bulb is not particularly bright, especially when it is first turned on as it takes a little time to warm up properly. Once the light is at full glow it is good for ambient lighting in a room, it is not good enough to read by though. I haven't tried putting a higher wattage bulb in replace to the shop one but i imagine that would make it a bit brighter. It is Ikea so it is crazily street but the downside is that pretty much every student household will have three of these floating around. It is not a very individual unique lamp unfortunately.

          Highly recommended.

Ikea have some great budget lighting options don't they?! This funky bedside or table lamp is only 3.59 pounds - bargain! I use my Grono lamp next to my bed. It is approximately 20cm high and 10cm wide. It takes candle (chandelier) screw-in light bulbs with a maximum wattage of 40W. Bulbs are obviously sold separately from the unit itself. The light unit is made from quit thick, sturdy frosted white glass with a matt finish. It is very simple but sleek in design and definitely does not look cheap, as the price might suggest! It is operated by a simple on/off switch on a white cord. The cord is 2m long - more than enough length I find. There is a small indentation on one side of the base where the cord fits in so that this doesn't make the light unstable. With the maximum wattage of 40W this isn't going to shed masses of light throughout the whole room, but it is perfect as a bedside lamp I find. It's more than enough light for me to read comfortably by in the evenings in bed, although I probably wouldn't use it alone as a desk lamp for long hours of working. It might be ok if you were just using it for some extra light along with an overhead light though. Being quite a soft light, and also further mellowed out by the frosted glass, it does make for nice low, mood lighting if you were watching a DVD in the room or something like that. All in all the light does it's job very well, looks nice and unobtrusive (even if not exactly exciting or stunning to look at), and it all comes at a very reasonable price. You can't go wrong!
