overall a good little hifi that does the job!

I bought the Philips MC146 for my 11 year old daughter for Christmas and I'm pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of this Hi Fi. Firstly it looks good and is compact and easy to set up; you simply attach two wires into each speaker, plug it into the mains and away you go! Secondly the sound quality is really quite good for the price, (£59.99 from Argos) it's certainly loud enough for a Childs bedroom, and even at the highest volume setting sounds reasonably clear. However if the song has a loud base then it can distort slightly when the volume is turned up to its maximum and the bass boost button switched on but for general use its actually quite good.

When listening to CD's I found the sound quality much crisper than when listening via iPod, also for some reason the volume seems to go higher when listening to CDs, not that I will ever let my daughter turn the volume to full, but I just wanted to test it out!

The iPod docking station has several different size holders for the various iPod models, which I'm assuming allows it to be compatible with most iPods - old and new. The iPod charges whilst the Hifi is on and acts as a convenient place to store your iPod when not in use.

The radio tunes in quickly and is easy to programme in fact there really isn't too much to get your head around with this system, the features are straightforward and buttons self explanatory. It looks good, though made mainly of plastic it feels a little lightweight, but you get what you pay for and in my opinion this is excellent value for money.

Wonky manual controls but good remote

My husband bought me this for Christmas. I was really chuffed when I saw what it was. It looks nice and it sounds pretty good too.

You have a tape deck on the bottom which is useful for listening to those old compilations you made years ago!! Tape cassettes are so old fashioned but I still like to listen to some of those old tapes I bought when I was younger...

The system is lightweight and easy to move about....it sits neatly on quite a narrow bookcase. Sound quality is really good.

      PROBLEMS
I do have an issue with it's manual controls though. Sometimes they just won't work and if I have mislaid the remote control (often done) It is hit and miss wether or not manual controls will work. (usually a miss) I cannot work out why this should be and I ought to have got hubby to return it.
The lid on the CD player is one that flips up on top and not a slidey out one. If you are like me you will find this annoying cos you will end up putting stuff on that lid and each time you wanna change the CD you have to move said stuff out the way!

Even so, I think for its money its a neat system. Maybe I am just pleased to be able to play my old cassettes again!
