you still need regular eye checks, but in the meanwhile these do really work

I am in my (ahem, whispers quietly) mid- 40's and have always had perfect eyesight, something I admit to having taken for granted over the years.
On the whole my eyesight is still very good, but I have turned into my Mum, and her Mum before her! I stand in the kitchen, where the light is not very good and I hold a packet, or a tin and I look at the cooking instructions or calorie content and I find myself moving the article back in forth in front of me! Is it better to hold it close to my eyes? Is it better to hold it further away! It took me a while to admit, that my eyesight is not as great as it once was, only though for close items with small print fortunately - As I type this review, I am sat at my computer desk, using a proper computer with a monitor and I can see the font and written words totally clearly.

I keep thinking to myself that I ought to go and have a full eye test at the optician, and yes, this is something that I will do very soon - meanwhile though I thought I would try out some reading glasses and see how I got on.
I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so initially I popped into Poundland and bought two pairs, of two diferent strengths of lenses to see how I would get on.

My life changed! Rather than admitting I was hurtling towards middle age (no comments please) I cold go back to thinking that I am still the same as I was in my twenties and thirties.. One happy me once more!
The problem though was that the glasses from Poundland were very cheap and flimsy, they did the job, but if I was wearing them and I sneezed, you had the feeling that the glasses you were wearing would launch across the room... so I shopped around

I found a lovely looking pair of glasses in Debenhams, now not knowing which is a good brand name and which isn't - I took the time to try on the glasses that I liked the look of.
I eventually chose a pair of turqoise glasses, from the Sight Station range, at a cost of £18 - They have patterned arms, in turqoise and the outer part of the lense frame is also coloured and patterned....

There are other styles at similar prices and of various colours, I found it hard to chose to be honest, they were all very fashionable and nice quality
The glasses come with a free matching case - to be fair, nothing is free, so it would be better to say that inclusive in the prixe is a glasses case - which is very handy, as there was no way that in my handbag full of junk that a pair of glasses would remain in a good condition for more than a few hours, as I am making a real effort to remember to take my glasses with me wherever I go..

These glasses come in 5 strengths, I only need 1.0 at the moment, but they also come in 1.5 - 2.5 - 3.0 and 3.5
Now, as mentioned previously I have owned a cheap pair of reading glasses, and quite honestly these Sight Station glasses are years ahead in terms of quality - they feel firm and well made, the arms close nicely into position and they sit on your nose nicely - not wonky as the cheap ones do!

I must stress that I intend to visit the optician, as buying a pair of reading glasses is no substitute for regular eye checks...
These glasses are only to be worn as reading glasses, not for use when driving, operating machinery and they are most definately not to be classes as safety eye wear..

My intention is to buy another couple pairs, one to leave at work, one to have in my hand bag and one to have at home...
      These glasses are invaluable!

        Fashionable glasses for reading!

        Sight Station Reading Glasses
        -----------------------------------

One of the worst aspects of getting older is needing to wear glasses for reading. In my case it isn't because I dislike the look of glasses, it is the inconvenience of having to use them at all, as until I discovered Sight Station glasses I only had one pair and of course I could never find them. When I was growing up one of my most vivid memories, as my parents entered their fourth decade, was the way my mum would suddenly shout "where's my readers?" and this would promote a full house search for them! Now we have more choice, and reading glasses can be purchased in many fashionable styles and colours so no longer are we always restricted to one pair.

I have to say though that something that does concern me is that the availability of reading glasses from high street shops may, in its own way, have promoted the avoidance of the optician eye test. For many the first sign of eye problems is that they can no longer read easily, rather than they are not seeing into the distance as clearly. I would never recommend the purchase of reading glasses without a full eye test, as problems with sight creep up on you, and the sight test checks not only for your prescription, but can identify health conditions at an early stage where they are more treatable. It is really important if you drive to get them checked as your distance may have got worse. Presbyopia is the term used to describe the age related changes that not only affect near but far vision as well, and the latter is more difficult to notice yourself. If you want to double check your reading abilities you can follow the instructions on the online guide on the Sight Station website and charts are also available in stores.

I have the sort of eyes that would not be able to use off the shelf reading glasses without contact lenses in for distance, as I have one eye which has a much more severe prescription that the other. So I am instructed by my optician to wear contact lenses, and then to add the reading glasses over the top in the strength 1.5. This is brilliant as I can then choose fashionable glasses for this purpose. I also have some prescription reading glasses which are important for the day when I choose not to or am unable to wear lenses.

Sight Station glasses are brilliant because they come in so many different styles, and over the years I have collected 8 pairs in different colours and designs. My latest purchase are the Jardin frames, which are available from Amazon for £9.78 which is a saving of almost £7 on the list price. They are so pretty and have a green and yellow frame. They have a subtle design depicting a spring garden, and are supplied in a soft matching yellow fabric case. One of the attributes many of the styles have is that they are supplied with a matching case, which means you can transport them so easily in your handbag. The case design matches the frame design so beautifully, and the Jardin frames have a beautiful springlike pattern of leaves and flowers. This design is also available in the shade "Rose" on the Sight Station website where it retails for £16, but on Amazon the rose shade will cost only £9.78. The arms of the glasses fold in neatly so that they slide into the case with ease.

I think the quality of these glasses is outstanding. In all the pairs I have owned over the years their longevity is amazing, and I still have the complete set as my reading prescription is unchanged from 6 or 8 years ago. Only last week when I had my sight test it was confirmed that I was still 1.5, but had I been told to purchase a higher strength I could easily have sold my collection on Ebay where there is a buoyant second-hand market for these glasses.

You can purchase glasses from Sight Station themselves at www.sightstation.com. They often have sales on where you can buy multiple pairs at a discount price. I have also seen stands in various stores including BHS. Personally I buy all mine from Amazon, and often there will be some available for under £10, but if you want the very latest up to the minute styles then the Sight Station website is the place to go as they have the widest selection.

What I tend to do is to place the glasses in all the important areas around the house and in the car. As I live in a six bedroom house on three floors it is really important to me as I can locate a pair in every room I go in with frequency. Before I had several pairs I was starting to turn into my mother and when I started asking "where's my readers?"- I knew that I had to act fast!

The beauty of these glasses is that you can choose them according to your outfit. This means if you are going out for the evening and you wish to co-ordinate glasses with clothing and a handbag you can do so. It makes reading the menu really easy, and it turns a necessity into a fashion accessory. They are lovely for weddings and holidays and because they are so inexpensive it isn't a great loss if you mislay them. Caring for them is so easy too. I just use lens wipes and they clean easily. As the glasses are made from plastic they do not break, and so are really resistant to scratches and are pretty robust.

Sight Station also sell a good choice of glasses for men as well as readers to use in the sun, and also they do a sunglasses range. They all come in a choice of strengths from those that cater for the occasional user who maybe hardly needs to use reading glasses, right up to the challenging magnification options.

        Final Thoughts
        ------------------
I love these glasses, they are fashionable, fun to wear and they are a fresh and youthful style. I think the Jardin design is my favourite, but I have so many really lovely alternatives to suggest. Flora green has a beautiful floral pattern of brown and green, Chantilly has a dainty lilac butterfly print, and Arizona are a brilliant pair for reading in the sun and come in two colours.

I think these glasses represent excellent value for money and are an excellent way to always have a pair handy for whatever the occasion. Just one caveat I would add is that I feel having a sight test is vital before you purchase these, especially if you haven't been for some time. This is because although they help with reading, you may be missing something that could take away your sight further down the line that only a qualified optician can spot. My husband is borderline for glaucoma and is being watched annually as his pressures are on the high side. He has no symptoms at all, and he only needs glasses for reading. Had he not been really keen on making sure his vision was in a good condition for driving, he would not have known this, and as he may go on to develop the condition he could have lost a large portion of his vision before having any symptoms.

          Recommended!

I wear glasses for reading mostly - and I have two pairs of normal prescription glasses which work very well for me. However, when I go to work, on occassion, I have forgotten my glasses and I've been left struggling to read necessary data and information during the course of my shift. I am a nurse and so its kind of important that I can read prescriptions and medical notes! Luckily I am not as blind as a bat and so I can manage, but over the course of a shift (especially a night shift), my eyes become strained and very tired. And then a colleague told me about Sight Station Fashion Reading Glasses - and suggested that I get a pair to permanently keep in my locker at work so that I always had some glasses available to me.

I bought my glasses from Sight Station at Boots and they cost me a very reasonable £27.99. At the time they had a deal on where you could purchase a second pair for half price (not sure if this offer is still on), but I declined the offer as these were to serve as an extra spare pair anyway. There were a lot of styles to choose from and several strengths. I opted for the Pierrot style, which were the higher priced end of the range, but were plain black and stylish - which is what I was looking for for work.

The glasses fit me well and feel sturdy enough to withstand general use. The are fairly lightweight and so comfortable to wear, although I do find the arms a little too chunky behind my ears, but I think this is a peculiarity for the style rather than the range itself.

The glasses are perfectly adequate for short term use. I wouldn't say my vision with these glasses was a good as when using my prescription glasses - but I guess that is to be expected. However, as a back up pair they are fine and they're certainly good enough to be able to function with. I did have to try a couple of different strengths on in the shop before I found what worked for me. My prescription strength is -1.5 but I found I needed -2 strength with this range - and so it really is worth trying them out first.

Its difficult for me to comment on how long they last because I tend to use mine so infrequently, but I have had them four months and they still look good as new. They did come with a hard case to keep them in and so this is handy for storage.

I would recommend these glasses as a spare or for anyone who needs to use glasses infrequently. They are not as good as prescription glasses, but then they are also fairly inexpensive.

          Great non prescription reading glasses

On a recent visit to the opticians I was convinced that I was going to be told that I would be needing glasses for reading as I was really struggling to read the small print in my books late at night and the information on the back of medicine bottles was virtually impossible! Therefore I was really surprised to be told that my eyesight was good and I did not need glasses. Although, in many ways i was very pleased to hear this news it did not solve my immediate problems.

A friend of mine who wears contact lenses had told me that she had bought a pair of non prescription glasses for the times that she did not want to wear her lenses so I thought that I would take a look at these so I trundled off to Boots to see what they had on offer. I was very impressed to discover the range of inexpensive and attractive Sight Station Fashion Reading Glasses.

These glasses start from only £14 which I thought seemed a very reasonable price to pay. Prices seem to go up to about £30 and there is a vast array of shapes, colours and patterns to choose from. They all look quite funky. Looking at the styles and colours though they most are probably more suited for ladies although this does not seem to be stated anywhere.

The pair I chose was Cameo Purple which was described as 'a modern classic'. They are a very simple design but the purple makes them feel a little bit unusual. There was a whole stand of these glasses to try on in Boots and there was of course a mirror so that you could get a good idea of what they looked like and how comfortable they were to wear. All the glasses come with a nice soft case in the matching colour to keep them protected.

You also need to make a decision about the strength that you will need. The strength ranges from1.0 to 3.5 and this refers to the amount of magnification that the different strength lenses provide. You can try out different strengths with different styles which is very helpful. I discovered that I only needed the minimum strength but it is very surprising just how much difference these make to my late night reading.

I am very pleased with these glasses as they really have made a difference to me and it is lovely to feel that I can read when I am tired without feeling that my eyes are straining. They are also very comfortable to wear and I have to say that I hardly remember that I have them on. I don't wear them all the time when I am reading though - just when I am tired or the print is exceptionally small.

I do really recommend these fashion glasses but I should stress that they should not be a substitute for having a regular eye test. On my next eye test I expect that I probably will need prescription glasses but these are a good stop gap. Also, as they are sold through opticians, I can only assume that there is a seal of approval from the profession.
