The best Palm device I've had the pleasure of owning

I first bought the T5 a couple of years ago for around £200 off amazon. I hold Palm OS devices in very high regard, as I feel it is the best operating system for mobile devices.

Starting up any Palm OS device is incredibly simple. You calibrate the touchscreen in 3 moves, set the time and date, and bingo! THere is also a quick tour program, for complete newbies to palm os.

The T5 is a beautiful device. It is quite slimline, but not enough to feel fragile, there is still a sturdy feel. The screen is also a treat, and is responsive to touch from a stylus, but not so much from a thumb like an iPhone, as it has a specific type of touchscreen.

The stylus is well placed on the right side, although it can be tricky to get out sometimes. Personally I prefer a multifunctional pens, as built in styluses are always thin and feel unsubstantial.

It also has inbuilt wifi, which is really handy when sitting in a cafe, as it is so incredibly easy to set up. Mine also came with a BT Openzone card with £30 on it. It can also be linked up with your mobile phone via bluetooth, which with 3G nowadays, provides fairly cheap, reliable access. The palm also has infrared, which most devices have abandoned, but as my old Palm devices did not have bluetooth, I found it quite handy when changing devices.

THere is also a memory card slot. SD cards can be bought dirt cheap nowadays, so it is a good way to build on the 100mb internal memory.

The buttons are also useful, they provide quick and easy access to menus, email and the calendar.

Now, onto the software. The T5 comes with some of the sandard palm os software, but there is so much software and freeware for palm os available on the internet that I would buy it for this reason alone. The standard software is very good though.

The T5 has a media application, but you can use the freeware player TCPMP to watch films, and with the good quality, quite well sized screen, this does not strain your eyes, now does the picture look grainy.

Menus are very simples. THey can be set to either list or icon, and menus are customisable. The house button brings you onto a main screen where yocan list your most frequently used programs, and another touch of the home button will display all of the programs on the palm.

The hotsync program for the pc in order to be used in conjunction with the device is good for updating your calendar and contacts, but there are several programs which allow for the device to be used as a plug and play device - which is much better for transferring big files.

The battery life is really excellent. Even with abluetooth wifi and anything else I could think of on, I still didnt have to charge it for 2 days.

One problem that I did have was the screen not being ble to calibrate properly, but Palm quickly fixed it for me.

I did have a treo 650 smartphone, but the lack of wifi I found too frustrating, although it was excellent in every other way.

Overall, the T5 is an excellent device, a really brilliant effort from Palm, and it has now been my business companion for years now - I havent found the need to replace it - its just THAT good.
