An average hair removal gel which doesn't really deliver what it promises

I've mentioned in a couple of reviews that every year my mother in law hands me a bag full of toiletries. It is always a mixed bag but it tends to last me for quite some time and it saves me money as I don't need to buy toiletries that often! One product I've taken on holiday with me is from Nair's Pretty Naturals Range and it is the Refreshing Effect Gel.

I find hair removal creams pretty hit or miss and I do find it easier using a razor but as I didn't have to buy this product then I may as well try it and if it is useless then I haven't lost anything.

      *~* What is it? *~*

Instead of a cream this hair removal product is a gel and is meant to leave your skin smooth but also refreshed and revitalised leaving your skin looking very healthy. It is meant to give an invigorating skin care experience. The refreshing gel contains blue algae which is known for its smoothing properties.

      *~* Packaging *~*

The refreshing effect gel comes in a plastic tube with a screw on lid. To go with the whole cooling effect theme the packaging is in hues of green and blue which are colours meant to promote calm. You can see the product through the tube so you can easily see how little or how much you have. On the back there are the instructions, ingredients list as well as contact details etc.

      *~* In Use *~*

      ~ Consistency ~

The pale blue gel is thick enough for it not to slip through your fingers which is ideal as when you apply it you don't want it dripping everywhere but it is also thin enough to easily remove with a damp sponge.

      ~ Aroma ~

When I first saw this in my Christmas bag I didn't know what to expect but the blue packaging gives you the image of an ocean type fragrance. It really doesn't have much of a dominant scent and in my opinion is mildly scented but what you can smell is refreshing, quite uplifting but no matter how many different ingredients you can put in a hair removal cream it still has that quite distinct hair removal fragrance.

      ~ Application ~

To apply you simply need to spread an even, thick layer on either your legs or underarms and leave on for 5 minutes (do not leave on longer than 10 minutes). Once the time is up you just simply need to rinse off with either a wash cloth or sponge. Nair promise that there is no need for razors as the gel will remove all hair and leave skin super smooth.

      ~ Results ~

I found the gel easy to apply on my legs and it was incredibly smooth and it is pretty easy to get a thin layer (a thick layer will result in wasting the product). The scent of the product isn't too intense fortunately and just tends to blend into the background so it isn't too refreshing at this point - I would have hoped for a more refreshing scent, something a bit stronger.

So after 5 minutes I come to take off the gel with a warm, damp sponge and I was pleased to notice that my skin was instantly smooth and it did feel a little tingly after my legs were dried off. I was actually surprised that the hair had been removed all in one wipe of a sponge, it actually did the job easily. There was no need to leave the gel on for longer for results to happen.

I can't say that I found the gel particularly refreshing on my skin although there was a little tingly sensation but my legs felt exactly how they normally do when I've used a razor albeit they were incredibly smooth and soft. The gel didn't irritate my skin whatsoever which was a plus but this is certainly nothing special and I would have hoped for a more refreshing, rejuvenating feeling.

      *~* Ingredients *~*

Aqua, Potassium Thioglycolate, Potassium Hydroxide, Carbomer, Oleth-20, Glycerin, Parfum, Menthyl Lactate, Coco-glucoside, Magnesium Sulfate, Propylene Glycol, Menthol, Disodium Methylene Dinaphthalenesulfonate, Phenoxyethanol, Spirulina Maxima Extract, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Limonene, CI 74160

      *~* Price & Availability *~*

The gel comes in a 150ml tube. Boots are currently selling it for £5.10. It is no doubt available in other supermarkets, pharmacies and discount stores.

      *~* Recommendation? *~*

Not really, because you have to apply a thick layer you end up using most of the tube all in one go which is a shame. It doesn't give that promised refreshing sensation but I wasn't really expecting it to. It does however remove the hair with no fuss and under 10 minutes so I can't complain there. Would I recommend? Not really, it isn't special and doesn't deliver what it promises.
