This is a review of Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Relaxing Balm. It is a product I would never have thought to buy myself but I received a generous sample size bottle to try in a beauty box and at the time I wondered whether I would like it or not but I am a huge fan now!
My hair is blonde (ahem, enhanced blonde!) and past my shoulders and straight. I get a better straight result obviously using my ghd straighteners but often just blow dry to damp and let nature do the rest. As a result it can be a little bit frizzy and is often knotty by the end of the day.
After shampoo and conditioner, I usually use a spray in conditioner or heat defence spray but I try not to use too many products as it can make my hair greasy.
The Paul Mitchell super skinny relaxing balm is quite like a serum when you pump it out onto your hand. It has a beautiful smell that reminds me of holidays (!) which is nice.
I use around three or four pumps of the balm on my long hair and use on the length, not the roots, just smoothing through damp hair before blow drying. I could definitely say that my hair looked better after using this product as it just seemed a bit straighter and less knotty. I had to wash my hair after 24 hours though so I think it made my hair a bit greasier - I usually get away with washing my hair every other day unless my daughter gets food in it!
The packaging on this product is not very special. It is white plastic with the black futuristic lettering that is typical of the Paul Mitchell brand. It also has lime green accents on the lid and lettering which looks quite trendy.
The claim is that this product smoothes and conditions and I would agree with that. It also claims to speed up drying time which is a winner in my time-stricken beauty regime. It won a hair award in 2010 and was a shout! Beauty award winner in 2011 so is clearly a popular product out there. I was pleased that I got to try this as I would never think to buy a product for my hair that is marketed 'super skinny'. I loved the scent of it and with proper styling feel I could get some good results out of this product.
Price and availability
The balm is available in two sizes. 150 ml has a RRP of £16.75 and 250 ml retails at £23.95. This is quite expensive but probably worth it if you feel it improves the look and feel of your hair.
I love using this product and will consider a future purchase but will make myself finish the mass of leave in hair products that I already have first!
Paul Mitchell is a top of the range hair product supplier. Their goods are usually exclusively supplied by hairdressers. This Relaxing Balm is part of their 'Super Skinny' and 'Smoothing' range which aids those whose hair is not naturally poker straight to achieve a smoother, sleeker style. The 'skinny' in the title refers to the fact that hair will look like it has less volume when these products are used! There is a shampoo, conditioner and serum also available in this range.
The product comes in a tall, sleek plastic bottle (which is recyclable). It has a pump action top which can be twisted to an 'on' or 'off' position to stop accidental spillage. There is 200mls or 6.8fluid ounces of liquid inside. This is a large sized product and I have found that my bottle is lasting me quite a while!
The brand claim this product "smoothes and controls" hair that is wavy, curled or just a bit wild and frizzy. It works by relaxing the hair shaft so that you can style the hair straight. The balm also has heat protection qualities and the brand claim that the formula actually helps to speed up the drying process. The brand also boast this formula contains "wheat and vegetable proteins" which help to moisturise the hair. I was initially a little dismayed when I read the phrase on the back of the bottle though: "Guaranteed only when sold by a professional hairdresser". It made me worry that I somehow wouldn't be able to work the product like a proffesional could! The brand actually do recommend seeking professional stylist's advice about which of their products will best suit your hair.
The balm is clear and gum-like, but quite runny so that it pools in your palm rather than sits in peaks. It is only very slightly sticky so this consistency makes it easy to work it through your hair without your fingers gelling together. The balm has a slightly sickly, lemonade or pine kind of fragrance which is a little too mild for my liking - I would have liked a more flowery frgrance and also something with a more lasting aroma. This doesn't hold it's fragrance after your hair is dried.
Directions for use state that the balm should be applied to damp hair, so hair that has been towel dried after washing. It is advised to use 2 to 4 pumps of product but with longer hair like mine a couple more pumps might be needed. I find it's really easy to work the balm through the hair as it seems to vanish into the strands without me needing to massage it in.
I personally blow dry my hair straight when using this balm. My hair doesn't feel sticky or too difficult to comb into style as I'm drying. Despite the fact that this product is supposed to help hair dry more quickly I don't really notice any reduction in the drying time!
When my hair is dry it is noticably more soft and a lot tamer although the style doesn't have the definition it does in comparison with using heated irons/straighteners. The product doesn't make my hair heavy or leave any residue or graininess on the shafts, which means my hair feels good, loose and clean. The product also leaves hair a little bit shinier and healthier looking. It definately helps make any frazzled parts of my hair (which is actually bleached and therefore dry and damaged) look neat and sleek.
Although the brand make a mention of this product beating rainy weather conditions when promoting this I have to say that my hair will spring back to a curly style if I'm caught in the rain or even just a mist! My style, using this balm, just won't hold if it's anything other than dry and sunny!
