This shampoo is one I tried thanks to my mum who put together a pack of things for me to take into hospital when I had my son and would be there for several days due to having a caesarean section. She had selected this shampoo and the matching conditioner for me to try as the smoothing action is supposed to tame unruly hair which is how mine become in hot conditions such as hospital and she thought this would be good to try as it promises hair that is easy to manage which again with a new baby is a must.
The shampoo and its claims
This shampoo is made by Matrix which is an American salon shampoo company their product statement is "smooththérapie smoothes frizzy, unruly, medium to coarse hair with the silky serum of Camellia flower seed to continuously control frizz in hot, humid seasons while replenishing hair's moisture during dry cool seasons." The bottle itself is made from plastic with a flip top lid and can be recycled.
I think you need to know my hair type so you can compare it to your own to see if this review will help you decide whether to try it based on my experience. I have long straight shoulder length hair that is fine but there is lots of it so it is quite dense which means it can end up looking heavy and lacklustre. Equally it can get easily tangled and unruly especially in dry conditions such as hospitals or when on holiday.
The shampoo itself is a clear golden colour and is actually quite thin in its consistency and you do need to be careful how it comes out of the bottle as it is very easy to end up with too much shampoo as it pours out very fast. You do only need about a 50 pence piece size of shampoo to get a good lather. In my hands and the bottle I am unable to detect the camellia flower and instead the scent to me is very chemical and reminds me of the smell you get at hairdressers in that it is a mix hair dye, perm lotion and other hair products. Despite this description it isn't actually unpleasant. The scent is also a lot less noticeable once I have rinsed the shampoo out and is barely noticeable when the hair is dry. The shampoo lathers well and produces a good amount of white bubbles. Washing it out is straight forward and it rinses out well and doesn't leave any residue on the hair. My hair feels nice and clean with it the shampoo and any greasiness in the hair is removed the hair but it doesn't fell overly dry either and doesn't feel as if it has been stripped of its natural oils. When used with the conditioner I find that it does indeed smooth my hair out and leave it very soft and manageable and the frizz that I get in the dry conditions disappears. When used by itself without the conditioner it fairs less well and though it still leaves my hair smooth and soft it is still prone to a bit of frizz and a bit more fly away and harder to style.
Using this shampoo over a period of about a month I did notice an improvement in my hair and how it did become more soft and manageable. The waviness with warm weather was less noticeable making it more manageable.
Comparing this to my normal shampoo which is an L'Oreal Elvive. I don't actually think this one performs any better at making it nice and smooth and soft and manageable. Given that this shampoo retails at around £7 for a 250ml bottle which is twice the price I don't think that the results are twice as good and when used without the conditioner in conjunction the results are decidedly average.
This is a nice shampoo when used with the conditioner and is good at producing soft manageable hair however it does have a chemically smell and when used by itself I don't think the results are anything more than average. Given the retail price compared to L'Oreal I don't think it justifies it price tag and it is one I won't be trying again. Only 3 stars for me for this product I am taking one star off for the scent, and another for only average results when used by itself and not as a combination with the conditioner.
