When my American style fridge freezer started making very strange noises, I decided that after 9 years together it was time to say our goodbyes. Any excuse really, I had for years been pining after a Smeg, purely for their looks. For a fridge freezer they are pretty gorgeous! After much deliberation over colours, we finally took the plunge and swiftly handed over our credit card details before I changed my mind and realised we could take the kids to EuroDisney for the price I'd just paid for a big cold box to keep my milk cool ; )

Aside from just looking pretty, the Smeg is a top notch electrical product and does its job exceptionally well. With an Energy efficiency rating of A+, in terms of electrical consumption you don't get any better (a mere 292 kw/h per year - around £42 at current energy prices).

The 330 litres capacity make a fairly average size, although it took some getting used to for us as our previous fridge freezer had a combined capacity of over 500 litres. For a family of four this isn't (if I'm honest) a big enough capacity, however we have a small storage freezer in the garage which allows me to put any food in it that cannot fit in the Smeg. With the split going in favour of the fridge, the freezer holds a pretty small 100 litres.

Apologies for making so many comparisons to the American style fridge freezers, but I always found storing bottles took up so much room in the fridge doors with various juices, waters and milks to suit all of our preferences, and the lack of a rack inside the main body of the fridge often saw bottles of wine laden over yoghurts etc! In my spangly new Smeg, my precious bottles of wine now have their very own home, in a chrome wine rack no less!

Holding three glass shelves inside which can be adjusted to your own needs, there is plenty of space for fresh food for us as a family of four. I shop weekly for fresh items anyway so I find it stops me buying stuff I don't need. Last Christmas we were on holiday so didn't need to worry about the extra storage for the Christmas period when we all inevitably go and fill our fridges with as much food as we possibly can. I am slightly concerned about where it will all go this Christmas, but I have 8 months to worry about that one!

The automatic defrost should allow that you don't have to switch it off and defrost the whole thing.

The freezer has two drawers, which adequately fit our peas, etc in and a shelf wide enough that will fit a pizza box in.

With its oversized polished handles and its retro look, this fridge freezer is so much more than that, and rather than try and blend into your kitchen as so many fridges do, this one screams look at me, look at me!

Priced at around £1,300 this beauty is most definitely worth it. Comes with a two year manufacturer guarantee.

      Available colours:

Pastel Blue, Blue, Black, Orange, Cream, Red, Pink, Pastel Green, Lime Green, Silver. We opted for the Red as a lot of our kitchen accessories are red, however it really was a struggle to decide, they are all so nice (except the orange!!). I don't know any other manufacturer of fridge freezers that offer such a choice of colours.

      Dimensions:
      Depth 660 mm
      Width 600 mm
      Height 1790 mm

A cool looking fridge freezer that has a very retro feel!

Whilst looking around for a new Fridge Freezer a few months ago, my eye was caught by this retro-looking appliance that resembles something straight out of another era. A big fan of the T.V series Red Dwarf, I also found the name of the manufacturer more than just a little bit amusing.

If you scour the internet then you might find yourself being put off by this ever-so-slightly expensive fridge-freezer. Reviews are mixed with many people claiming they are not worth the money you pay for them and no more than asthetically pleasing at best. But thankfully for me, this opinion was balanced by that of reviews on Dooyoo here and from my father-in-law who has owned a similar model for several years now and had little complaint. These latter kind of ressured me as, with a hefty price tag of a little over a grand, I had begin to have a few doubts about buying this product. Still, if you are thinking of buying one, may I suggest you consult your own sources first (be it your friends and peers or the Internet) as, being quite expensive as this product is, only you can decide whether or not you buy one. All I can offer you are my own experiences which so far have been largely favourable.

The fridge area is of a good size and holds a good, reasonably sized quantity of food! It has four toughened and sttengthened glass shelves and these are easily adjustable to your own height preferences and there are four trays situated inside the door also, for handy and effcient storage. All of these can be quickly removed for cleaning though I would suggest being careful because they do appear a little flimsy, though I haven't managed to break any yet, and I have heard they can be expensive to replace should you damage them, though, like I say, I have had no problems.

Underneath, the freezer looks smaller than I am used to and this is my one of the few complaints I have, as I would have liked a bit more space but I suppose I can't moan too much as this Smeg model appears to keep things much better frozen than my last fridge/freezer and holds a better temperature than many others I have known. How much of this is down to it being new though remains to be seen.....

My other complaint is that there is no Auto-defrost, something I would have liked for my money, but again, this is a small niggle.

Overall this retro fridge/freezer is nicely designed, looks cool and funky and is perfectly streamlined to fit in any modern kitchen. There are a few things I would change ~ stronger-looking door racks, an Auto-defrost function ~ but nothing that makes me regret my purchase and the fact that it has a high energy-economy rating means it is cheaper to run than most other makes and brands. Also it is VERY quiet and always makes me think of a submarine on silent-running! Would I recommend this make and model to anyone else? If you have the money certainly. It is a bit of an extravagance but a little bit of cool in the kitchen never did anyone any harm and it is always a talking point whenever we have anyone over!

Perhaps the dictionary should review its definition of the word, Smeg! In our house at least, it has stopped being a pseudo-swear word and now represents the very essence of style and cool!!

          stunning smeg

I was forced to bid a tearful farewell to my old Zanussi. Not because I loved it so much - it was noisy, lacked space and had ultimately betrayed me in its bid to evolve to an oven. No, I was tearful because of the knowledge that I would have to spend my well-earned cash on a boring replacement. As you may be aware, I detest cooking and therefor have little interest in those kitchen appliances involved in that hateful pursuit. With a heavy heart, I set off for the electrical retailers.

It's true what they say about love - when you don't look, you find. It was love at first sight in House of Fraser, when I noticed the Smeg FAB 32AZ, despite it's boring name. It has a fifties look, all rounded and inviting. And it is available in, wait for it, all of the following colours: black; blue; cream; pastel blue; pastel green; pink; red; silver; stainless steel or white. The joy! With hardly a second thought, I purchased the pastel blue version, with its oversized softly curved chrome handles and SMEG in widely spaced chrome lettering across the top.

My retro style, pastel blue fridge freezer is just the thing to finish my kitchen off. I've been leaning towards a 50's-Americana-ice-cream-parlour look for a while, with a white formica dining set with chrome legs, and pale pink and blue tiling. The smaller appliances are all chrome and curvy, and I've oodles of big glasses with straws and sundae dishes to accessorise my little fantasy café with. Excitement in the house peaked on the day of Smeg's arrival. Well, the kids were mildly interested, but I was beside myself. Delivery was professional and curteous, direct from Smeg, and all was going wonderfully until I realised just how big the thing was. Friggin enormous (pardon the pun)! Measurements are w600mm, h1800mm, d700mm (including air circulation space) just in case you're considering one. I ought to have paid more attention to this as it necessitated my moving stuff around while the guys waited patiently.

Once installed, I got the chance to get to know my new family member. Smeg FAB32AZ is equipped with 2 motors and 2 adjustable thermostats. In the accepted energy efficiency ratings, it is classed A. (ratings go from A to G, with A being most efficient). It will eat up 347 kw/h of energy in a year and if so inclined, you can work out how much it will cost to run. I really don't care, I love the evocative design so much.

The fridge freezer space is a 60/40 split, with the larger portion designed for fresh food. The fridge will hold 205 litres of food, has 3 glass shelves which can be adjusted for height. There are two containers for fruit and veg and a covered box for dairy produce. A nice touch is a chrome wine rack, much more interesting to me than all the foody bits. It's also fitted with an automatic defrost.
I find the fridge space cavernous, easily accommodating our needs. Everything is easy to reach and keeping it clean is a breeze because there are no deep corners.

The freezer holds up to 103 litres of food, in two drawer areas and a third compartment which houses a shelf which is designed, appropriately enough, to hold large pizza boxes. It will freeze 15kg of food in 24 hours and would take twenty hours to fully thaw. Again, this is more than adequate for our needs, and access to our nukeable meals is easy. I've not yet defrosted the freezer, but it looks as though cleaning will be a simple task. It could be due to the fact that my old fridge freezer was revving up in it's bid to try to get back to planet Zanussi, but I find the Smeg extremely quiet. I can easily hear myself hum "Happy Days" when I'm considering what to open and heat for dinner.

I sometimes sneak down in the middle of the night just to fondle those curves, and imagine that I can eat the enormous tub of ice cream waiting therein, with a spoon. I'm afraid that I have Smeg full of ice cream, pizza, hotdogs and coke at the moment, but less easily influenced folks could use it for all of their wondrous food making ingredients.
All I need now is a volunteer Fonz!

Smeguk.com carries information on this Italian manufacturer, including stockists. Refridgeration products carry a 2 year guarantee. FAB 32AZ retails at around £1299.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

I've rejected my Smeg FAB32 for a refund, after it was delivered with a faulty fridge door seal which would not connect properly with the frame, leaving a gap. The reason for requesting a refund is this was the second unit I'd had delivered, and the first had the same fault so I'd rather lost faith in it. On the positive side Smeg customer service have been excellent. On the negative, the Smeg engineer indicated the fault is common, and caused by a twisted chassis. I know 2 other people with this fridge, and I wish I'd checked with them before buying as both have had quality problems ranging from door seals to broken shelves/draws - which seem to be poor quality plastic. My Verdict - looks great, but poor quality for the price and I'd advise against it!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Save up and get one - it is totally worth it!

When I bought my flat three years ago I decided that even if I skimped on everything else I would definitely be buying a Smeg fridge-freezer. I managed to find it online for a knock-down price of £1100 and had it delivered for free for that price. After years of living in shared accommodation and having just a shelf in the fridge to call my own, the luuxury of having three shelves and two salad drawers almost sent me giddy! The freezer is slightly smaller but it still has two good-sized drawers and a top compartment which I find plenty for storing weeks worth of food in.

I get loads of compliments from people when they see my Smeg and several of my friends have now said they're buying one based on how great mine is. And you can get them in a whole range of colours so everyone will be able to find one that suits (mine's in pastel green and it is beautiful).

It has an energy rating of A so you can feel guilt-free about the environment whilst keeping your food cold and I use it for about two years before it needed defrosting and, when I did, it took just two hours.

In short, these things are amazing and I can't recommend highly enough. They are expensive but you will have it, and love it, for years. Definitely worth the investment.

            Great !!!!!!!!!!

Since I have started writing reviews on the contents of my kitchen I would like to follow up by telling you about my SMEG fridge freezer yes the names funny but the fridge freezer is a serious piece of equipment that I would never be without even though it cost my mum as a house warming present over £1700 well she would not buy me any other brand as she swears by SMEG and we have always had this brand in my family home. I know what you are all thinking why spend so much on a fridge freezer well the truth is if it had not been bought for me then I would never be able to afford it. Before I talk about the fridge freezer here are the specifications for comparison.

            Features

            11.6cu.ft gross fridge capacity
            3.6cu.ft gross freezer capacity
            2 freezer drawers
            1 freezer shelf
            Bottle rack in door
            Horizontal bottle shelf
            Egg tray
            Dairy compartment
            Adjustable door storage
4 half width adjustable door racks
            High temperature warning light
            Interior fridge light
            15kg/24 hrs freezing capacity
            Ice cube tray

            Dimensions

            Height 178.0cm
            Width 60.0cm
            Depth 70.0cm

The SMEG is very stylish foremost and is designed in a shiny black finish which can be a bit of a nightmare to keep clean what with little finger prints but well worth a good scrub when it is gleaming in the kitchen. It has a display of lights at the top which indicate the status of both the fridge and freezer and a warning light should a fault develop which in the 9 months that I have had it has never happened. Next on the visual side are the beautiful pull handles which actually lock the doors shut until operated which is great as most fridge freezers are shut purely by suction.

Now we move to the inside, the fridge is very spacious indeed and much wider than your normal fridge with four shelves which are adjustable and four door trays as well as a built in wine rack. The shelves are made of very tough glass and the inside of the fridge is white and very easy to clean down when it gets a little grubby. All the shelves and trays come out completely for ease of cleaning. There is also an egg tray and internal light which turns on when you open the door.

Now further down to the freezer which has two decent sized drawers with a shelf to store the supplied ice cube trays. It maintains the correct temperature constantly and even has a fast freeze setting for when you first add food that needs freezing off. It doe’s not however have an auto defrost and is not frost free so be prepared for a bit of hard work defrosting it but in the 9 months I have had it I have only had to do this once. Overall I would recommend this fridge freezer to anybody considering buying one but if you don’t have the money to spend on this fridge freezer in my opinion there are many more out there that meet the same standard but at half the price if not less. The fridge freezer is A rated for energy consumption so economical on the electricity bill.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review and look forward to your comments.
