I wish they'd bring it back

Many years ago I received a special offer from Yves Rocher to buy three of their items and get a discount so I decided to try them. Once I received my first consignment I was hooked - a catalogue was enclosed and there were always special offers of one kind or another so I often treated myself.

One of the things that I particularly liked was the Magnolia Eau de Toilette. Having looked online to find the current price I wish I had stock piled some bottles! It is sadly discontinued by Yves Rocher but can be purchased on Amazon for $99.75! It is also available on EBay with prices ranging from $25 to $100! I can't remember how much it cost me back in the 1980s but I certainly wouldn't have paid a fortune for it!

The box is white with a pink magnolia flower on it together with the name of the product and the size of the bottle which is 100ml or 3.38fl oz.

Inside there is a white bottle with the same pink magnolia on the front and this time there is just the word 'magnolia'. The bottle is a flattish sort of egg type shape and it does look very classy on the dressing table. The bottle has a screw top beneath which is an open top - there is no spray on this one. To use it you just put your finger over the open top and invert the bottle - then dab your finger behind the ears, on the wrists - in fact wherever you want to put the eau de toilette!

Now comes the difficult bit - describing the fragrance! I am not very good at this so I have done a bit of research to find out the information for the top, middle and base notes.

The top notes are magnolia and apple, the middle notes are tuberose, lily, gardenia and jasmine, and the base notes are sandalwood, patchouli, cedar wood, oak moss, vanilla and musk.

The result is a light, floral perfume which is truly delightful. The fragrance is flowery yet it isn't childish in any way. It has good staying power and I could smell wafts of it all day when I was wearing it.

I have to confess that I am really disappointed to find that Yves Rocher don't make this one any longer as I was all set to treat myself to a new bottle but I can't afford the prices on Amazon or EBay at the moment.

make way for the new perfumes

It's a well known fact to anyone who knows me I am a big fan of Yves Rocher products-just about everything in fact, but especially their perfume. This one;Magnolia,is a classic amongst Yves Rocher customers but like all the best products ends up being discontinued and replaced by something more modern and sexier. Okay it has to be said it's not the trendiest perfume in the world but it's one of those old time classics that just can't be beaten. The perfume comes in a flat sort of round bottle with a white top lined with gold(not real of course!) and wouldn't look out of place in a bathroom. The smell is,well classic magnolia actually! There isn't anything any different essence wise I can say about this in comparison with any other magnolia perfume to be honest, though having said that it is one of my favourite blasts from the past, and yes it's a shame they discontinued it but maybe it was getting past it's sell by date? You decide

A light and enchanting beauty of a floral cologne

        Launched: 1983
        Group: floral

        ~ Introduction ~

Some perfumes have the privilege of playing a part in our lives or those close to us. It's there to form memories, distant but fond and when recalled it may influence us into doing something in the now where the past and present meet. Such a perfume is Magnolia. I bought a 15ml flacon of this Eau de Toilette for my Mum as a Christmas present in 1986, I was eleven, almost twelve. I still remember how the bathroom smelled of this perfume when she used it and how eventually it had become her signature perfume. Until it was discontinued.

        ~ The bottle ~

The simple and elegant design of the fragrance is a milk coloured flattened egg shaped bottle that stands on a short, round bottom and is topped with a globe shaped lid on mines which are a 15ml and 100ml bottle. Both of these come in a splash bottle with a screw-on lid with no spray nozzle. The front of the bottle is adorned with a peachy pink drawing of the magnolia flower and has Magnolia written in small delicate letters across it.

        ~ The fragrance ~

        Top notes: magnolia, apple

The first bursts of the fragrance after a light splash on my arm are tender, though somewhat sharpish white floral notes that are infused with citrus notes of lemon, sweet notes of magnolia and I also distinguish the bittery, earthy oakmoss which is from the base notes. Vintage perfumes tend to exhibit one or two of their base notes right after application. A slightly soapy and powdery hint is also present and gives the 'Magnolia' impression, the signature notes of the fragrance so well known for.

Middle notes: tuberose, lily, gardenia, jasmine

In about half an hour I notice a strong floral theme emerging where the crispier side of magnolia becomes less apparent and its sweet, powdery character develops with the other white florals of which the heady tuberose and jasmine are the most dominant. I'm still getting the 'Magnolia' theme but this time it's richer, rounder and has some sillage too so others will notice it as well..

It's balanced, elegant but sexy and has an ever so subtle green edge that will keep it fresh like you've just sprayed it. This must be the main reason for the popularity of Magnolia. It stays in this phase for a good 3 - 4 hours and it still feels fresh and feminine. While being a discreet, 'innocent' cocktail of white flowers, Magnolia does it in a very grown up, sensual way. Beautiful.

Base notes: sandalwood, patchouli, cedarwood, oakmoss, vanilla, musk

In the final phase of the perfume after at least 5 - 6 hours, Magnolia is warmer, earthier and muskier. I catch the woodiness of sandalwood, the creaminess of smoky vanilla and the bittery greenness that's actually been there all along. The drydown is barely 'heard' and more or less indistinguishable because eau de toilette do not have long-lasting base notes. Subdued and breezy, like perfume residue smells on the clothes that have come in contact with it.

        ~ Conclusion ~

I've been wearing Magnolia for about two years when I added a full 100ml bottle of it to my perfume collection. It's one of those perfumes of mine I wear occasionally when I'm in the mood and the weather is fine. Yes, that's true Magnolia hails from the Mediterranean and also having a lighter concentration than perfumes, it lends itself readily to balmy evenings and warm summers. It's for all ages and occasions though somewhat of an acquired taste. A word of warning, this is not a fashionable fragrance, or a 'trendy' one perfume houses have been making since the nineties. It's classic, floral and a timeless one at that.

        ~ Price / Availability ~

Yves Rocher have discountinued the fragrance, however its licence has been bought and it's still being produced in Europe. Available online from perfume discounters. I found mine on Ebay at an auction for the price of £48 / 100ml Eau de Toilette though auction prices do vary and nowadays there seems to be more supply than demand for Magnolia than 2 years ago.

        Thanks for reading.
