I have never really been a fan of citrus-type aftershaves as I have always found them too 'lemoney' and a bit too perfume like for my taste so when I received a bottle of Molton Brown Fresh Bushukan Citrus Splash for Christmas I wasn't overly in a hurry to use it. It has almost been three months since I recieved this product and has been sat boxed up on my shelf until I ran out of my usual fragrance that I decided to give this a go. I have always been a massive fan of Molton Brown for their products and for their ethics as a company, I'm a huge fan on their black pepper range so I was willing to try any of their products. Indeed, the Citrus Splash does have that sweet and lemon like fragrance but it is not overpowering and does not smell like a floor cleaner like a lot of citrus type products do. The 'Bushukan' citrus smell is not too overpowering but it is certainly zesty and will give you a real kick first thing in the morning. The aftershave also gives off a nice musky/woody type smell simillar of that to the Black Pepper fragrance, I think this element of the product is what makes me like it so much because it balances out the citrus smell. There is one massive flaw to this product though, and it is common among other Molton Brown aftershaves, is that the smell just does not last very long. Sometimes when I spray it on me I stop smelling it after an hour which is such a shame as I love the smell of this product. I have been using it more recently alongside the Molton Brown Citrus Bushukan Body Wash which smells just as good and the smell stays on the skin for ages. I love Molton Brown but until they can make sure the product lasts longer on your skin then I won't fork out the £40 on a bottle of this. Ultimately I cannot fault the smell of it, that would give me 5/5 but the flaw lets it down sadly.
Molton Brown has always been, to us, the mark of a good bubble bath and soap.. but is it up to the job fragrance wise? I think not, based on Molton Brown Fresh Bushukan Citrus Splash. ** Price and Availability ** You can buy Molton Brown Fresh Bushukan Citrus Splash on the high street, in department stores like House of Frasier, Selfridges and Debenhams, and in Molton Brown shops. You can also purchase this online from the same retailers and also from Amazon and independent retailers. Price wise it's around £36 for 100ml so certainly in the mid to upper price bracket for men's fragrances, personally I expected it to be cheaper but I was hoping for a good quality product to give to my husband as a gift. ** Looks ** The bottle is very Molton Brown - wide, stubby, with a curved top and ridged metallic cap, clear with the Molton Brown logo on the front - in fact when it's sitting in the bathroom you could be excused for thinking it looks like a bubble bath albeit a small one, as I have a number of Molton Brown products that look very similar. It actually comes complete in a brown cardboard box which makes it a nice gift and easy to wrap. ** Application ** One thing you must note is that as a 'splash' there is no spray or pump dispenser with Molton Brown Fresh Bushukan Citrus Splash, you apply it Home Alone style (if anyone gets that reference, well done!!) It therefore isn't something you can easily carry about and apply on the go as you need to wash your hands afterwards, really. ** Scent ** The website describes it as a fresh and zesty scent and I'd agree with that, it has citrus hints, it's not really musky or strongly male aftershave smelling, it's quite light. As it's an eau de cologne you'd expect it to be light but for my husband and for me it's just too light, it goes on nice and fresh smelling, but literally within half an hour you couldn't really tell anything was there other than literally sticking your nose into his neck and inhaling (not something you really want strangers doing!). I don't favour the over strong bathed in aftershave type scent but this is so subtle as to be almost nonexistent. Rather than being a light airy fresh scent it's just a damb squib. ** Overall ** Honestly, I feel that I should give it 4 / 5 for the scent but what's the point of a scent which doesn't last even until you get out of the door in the morning? You might as well not bother. So I have to give this 2 / 5, and even then that's pretty generous as even though my husband has used half of this bottle up, it's more just to get it used up day to day. You can't use it for a special occasion, or even a day at work because it just doesn't have the staying power. I am a bit disappointed because it wasn't cheap and I do like Molton Brown products generally but I wouldn't buy another scent of theirs after buying Molton Brown Fresh Bushukan Citrus Splash. My advice for anyone looking for a zesty light scent for a man is to try Armani Aqua Di Gio or Dolce & Gabanna Light Blue, both are similar in tones but last much much longer and are around the same price point. Overall I can't recommend this at all, it's a waste of money.
I am currently trying to find the perfect summer fragrance. I want something that is citrus based but not too sweet and sickly. So far I have found plenty of citrus aftershaves but they have all been missing that musky quality I have also been looking for. I thought that I had found the perfect one when I was browsing in the Molton Brown store in Edinburgh and I came across Fresh Bushukan. Unfortunately after using it for a few weeks I decided it wasn't exactly ideal so the hunt continues. ~~~~~ Molton Brown ~~~~~ I am a big fan of Molton Brown and really appreciate their ethos as a company. I like the fact that their products are priced pretty much the same as most designer fragrances but they have a more exclusive feel to them as they are only really available in their own shops or in upmarket department stores such as Selfriges and Harvey Nichols. As a company there philosophy is to create products that are inspired by travel but with an unmistakable English feeling to them. It is for this reason that you can find Molton Brown products in some of the world's top hotels. As well as aftershaves and perfumes they also do a selection of skin care and body products. ~~~~~ Mediterranean Summers ~~~~~ Fresh Bushukan has an amazing smell. It is both fresh and lemony but it has a musky spiciness to it too that really offsets the sharpness of the lemon and really helps give it an extra kick. It contains Italian bergamot, Spanish Cistus and Italian lemon to give it its sharp citrus smell. The muskiness comes from the Indonesian patchouli, Sage clary and Hungarian Thyme. It is not only incredibly fresh and clean smelling but also really masculine as well. It is the ideal summer scent as far as I'm concerned and it is easy to see where the travel inspiration for this one comes from. When smelling it I was reminded of being on holiday in Greece and I could easily imagine Tuscany in the summer from it as there is just something about it that screams the Mediterranean. The fragrance is also really unique and smells like nothing else that I have smelt. I was racking my brains trying to think of something to compare it to but I couldn't come up with anything. ~~~~~ Design ~~~~~ Fresh Bushukan comes in the usual brown Molton Brown box which is magnetised for opening and keeping it closed. The bottle hugs the inside of the box and fits in there snugly. I love the box as there it is really classy looking and makes a refreshing change from the usual designer aftershave boxes which are throwaway. This box is designed to be kept and it looks really good sitting in the bathroom. The bottle itself is clear glass and the aftershave lotion is a light yellow colour and the lid is the usual chrome. Again it is understated and looks expensive. The problem that I have with the design is less to do with aesthetics and more to do with its application. Instead of being a spray aftershave this is a face and body splash. You are supposed to just splash some straight from the bottle onto your body and if you want some on your face then you just need to add some to your palms and pat it on your face. I am used to spray bottles and I prefer spray bottles. I don't find splashes to be practical for everyday use. It means that if I want to wear it I have to make sure that I apply it straight after showering and it also means that I can't just squirt some on my clothes if I leave the house in a hurry. ~~~~~ Longevity and strength ~~~~~ This is where my biggest problem lies with this aftershave. The longevity is useless with it and the strength is really subtle almost to the point of being undetectable after the initial application. Literally within about two hours of applying this I could no longer detect even the faintest whiff on my skin. Even though I applied the splash really liberally all over it didn't make any difference and it seemed to just evaporate after an initial burst of scent. This isn't some cheap drugstore brand and is from an expensive luxury brand that prides itself on using the best ingredients available so it really irritated me that it was so weak. In fact the accompanying shower gel which has the same amazing smell lasts longer on my skin than this did which was a real disappointment and the thing that made me decide that I wouldn't be purchasing it again. ~~~~~ Price and availability ~~~~~ Fresh Bushukan only comes in one size which is a 100ml bottle and it costs £36 so expensive but on a par with other high end aftershaves. You can buy it online from www.moltonbrown.co.uk or from their own shops which are mainly scattered round a few of the UK's larger cities. You can also usually find Molton Brown products in high end department stores such as Selfriges, House of Fraser etc. ~~~~~ Conclusion ~~~~~ It is such a shame that Molton Brown didn't spend more time on developing this as it had the potential to be so good. The smell is absolutely amazing and it is easily one of the best smelling aftershaves I have ever smelt. If not for the problems with its longevity and projection it is one I could easily see myself wearing for years. If they ever go back to the drawing board and come out with a new formulation then I will definitely be first in the queue to buy it. As it is though it is something that I could only recommend if you are willing to be splashing tons on yourself every couple of hours as otherwise it is just a waste of money and not something which I personally will be buying again.
