Many years ago I used to babysit for an adorable little baby whose mother had an absolutely amazing sense of style and who I longed to emulate "when I grew up"! One of the most striking things about her was how fabulous she always smelt so on day I plicked up the courage to ask what perfume she wore and it turned out to be this Dolce and Gabbana EDT (which I call red but which I think goes simply by the name of Dolce and Gabbana).
Obviously as soon as I could I rushed out to by myself a bottle so I could smell just like her...sad I know! But that was over 15 years ago now and I still wear this perfume on a regular basis so it was obviously a good choice!
It used to be widely available but rumour has it that it has now been discontinued and so I can currently only find it online. You can get it from the trusty Amazon for £33 for 50ml or £64.99 for the 100ml. As I am currently halfway down a 50ml bottle that I was bought four years ago I don't think I'd ever invest in the larger bottle, but if you go through a lot of perfume then it would probably be worth doing.
This perfume comes beautifully packaged in a vivid red box with has an almost suedette feel to it. It looks and feels very stylish and luxurious without being too ott about it. The bottle inside is a tall, thin, elegant looking thing which is mainly clear and topped by a gold band and again, a red lid. I don't normally like the brighter colours but I do really like this bottle. It looks timeless, stylish and classic whilst still being quite simple. The only wording on the bottle is "Dolce & Gabbana" in gold on the front. Although on the bottom there is a little sticker telling us how much is inside the bottle and that the glass shouldn't be disposed of "in the environment" after finishing.
In use the lid clips on very nicely and attaches itself firmly enough that it doesn't drop off in my handbag, leaving everything in there smelling of the perfume, but also not too tightly that it's difficult to get off. This lid covers the pump action squirty nozzle thing through which the perfume is dispensed. Again, this works well and dispenses a nice find mist of the perfume rather than in droplets or, even worse, a shower!
As soon as you take the lid off you can instantly smell the perfume. It is one of the strongest I've ever used and seems to permeate everything around it and linger for ages. For example, I sprayed some of this on last night before going out for dinner and I can still smell it when I walk into the bedroom this morning. It really does have tremendous staying power and longevity of strength.
As far as the fragrance itself goes, this is a combination of basil, tangerine, orange flowers, carnation, marigold and vanilla which is quite a surprise to me. From the list of notes blended into it I would have expected it to be sweeter than it is but to me this is a really quite spicy, oriental kind of smell and although you can definitely detect a hint of the vanilla coming through it's not too overpowering as I don't really like the smell of vanilla on it's own. I'm surprised though, that there aren't more spices included in this.
Whatever the ingredients are they blend perfectly to make, for me anyway, a perfect perfume for evenings, going out or special occasions. It's the ideal combination of muskiness, exoticism, sweet and spicy and I absolutely love it. I find it to be a really classic, sophisticated perfume (and one that I probably shouldn't have been wearing at one 18!) that makes me feel like a lady every time I wear it.
The only slight downside for me is how strong it is. While it is good to have a powerful, longlasting perfume, this one is so strong that I soon learnt not to actually spray it onto my wrists and throat but to spray a spritz of it in the air in front of me and then walk through it. If I do spray it directly onto my skin I can, literally, smell it until the next time I shower and whilst this isn't necessarily a bad thing, as I said it really is a fragrance better suited to evening wear and so isn't the best thing to be smelling of whilst doing the weekly shop!
In conclusion, I absolutely adore this perfume and have done so for many years. It's my regular perfume for evenings out or special occasions and even my husband now says he knows we must be going out if he can smell this perfume when he gets home! For me it's the perfect blend of fragrances that create something sophisticated yet wearable and it makes me feel special each and every time I wear it. You can always tell a good perfume by how many compliments you get on it and practically every time I wear it somebody comments on how nice I smell. I'll be devastated if the rumours are true and it is being discontinued but as it still seems to widely available on the internet I might add a bottle to my xmas list just to make sure I don't run out for a very long time!
** My Experience **
I received this perfume in miniature form as part of a gift set of miniature Dolce & Gabbana perfumes. I have to say that this was not my favourite perfume in the bunch simply because I felt that it smelled too old for me. I had not heard of this perfume before receiving it as part of the set, and I don't think the packaging did it any favours. This is just my opinion and some people may not agree but I found that the packaging looked quite classic, which meant that I immediately associated it with an older perfume for an older generation. Of course, I do not immediately judge a perfume by its packaging but combined with the strong depth of the fragrance it reminded me of something my Gran would wear.
** The Fragrance **
This perfume was first introduced to the market in 1992 and has been very popular since. The scent has a luxurious smell to it and is quite floral. It has notes of basil, orange flowers, tangerine, carnation, marigold and vanilla. This fragrance is not overly floral or citrus in smell but I personally found it to be quite strong. You certainly don't need to reapply it throughout the day as one spray will definitely last you.
** Packaging **
As I said earlier in the review, I personally found the packaging to have quite a dated look. The perfume comes in a cuboid shaped box which is quite a deep red/orange colour and has the brand name in black and gold on the front. The actual perfume bottle is very classically designed and is quite simplistic. It is cuboid in shape and is clear so you can easily see how much of the fragrance you have used. The actual spray part of the bottle is red with a slight gold band underneath.
** Price **
You can buy this fragrance for around £40-£45 for 50ml in most high street stores such as Boots, Debenhams, John Lewis and House of Fraser. You will probably be able to get it cheaper online though with most prices starting around £30-£35.
** Summary **
Although I personally found this perfume to be too strong a scent for me, this is purely my opinion and I am very picky about my perfumes so this will come as no surprise to some that I was so judgemental of this one. I personally feel this fragrance would be more suited to the older generation but again, this is purely my opinion and I apologise in advance if any of you young ones wear this!
I have quite a selection of perfumes and eau de toilettes which I've accumulated thanks to generous family members. This Dolce & Gabanna is the one I never use now because, however much I've tried to like, I really don't!
Like all D&G products this EDT is beautifully presented in a smart box inside of which is the smart glass bootle with a plain silver band and red perspex top which makes the product look expensive.
The good thing about it is that you can see exactly how much you've used (unlike, eg Nina Ricci's Air du temps etc) and the fact that it has a well designed spray - although I've found you can't dispense a fine spray, more of a squirt. This means, on the few times I've used it, I've used far too much which is a real pain if you're not keen on a scent.
When I first used it I noticed how blooming strong the smell is - it seems to hit you all at one so I couldn'rt tell what was in the scent. Apparently it has mandarin oils, marigold, orange, basil and vanilla but I couldn't detect any one ingredient as the EDT is very strong and it lasted longer on the skin than I'd have liked. I can never remember, in all my years of wearing fragrances, ever saying that!
Rather than smelling expensive ( about £30.00 for 30ml) I think it smells like a cheap fragrance because I found it harsh and headachy and was really disappointed as it isn't the classy/ classic perfume I'd expected it to be.
This, of course, is just my personal opinion as I do tend to go for the more subtle fragrances like Chanel & Dior. This is a best selling EDT by Dolce & Gabanna so maybe it's just me who has strange tastebuds - or perhaps it's more popular with women a lot younger than me lol!
I love my perfumes and was pleased to receive Dolce and Gabbanas perfume Dolce and Gabbana as a gift. The box alone is beautiful. Red and velvety, very luxurious. The bottle is plain but elegant, it's a tall plain bottle with just a red lid. Quite a contrast to the box which is really quite showy The actual perfume is quite dark and golden in colour. It sprays out in a fine mist and dries quickly on my skin.
The fragrance when it first goes on is really quite harsh and chemically and not very nice at all. This soon settles down to a more mellow flowery smell. D & G is a blend of tangerine, orange flower, carnation, marigold, vanilla and basil. The vanilla and carnation are really evident in this perfume which I really like. However after I have been wearing this for a couple of hours the smell becomes harsher, the floral tones are less evident and it seems to be more masculine. In my opinion I think that's the basil coming through, a very strange ingredient for perfume I think, but that may be just me. Although this is not unpleasant it is not the type of smell I like.
D & G advertise this perfume as "recommended for romantic occasions" totally wrong in my opinion! It has staying power and easily lasts all day. It costs £39.00 for a 50ml bottle although I'm sure this could be found at a lower price online.
I'm very pleased to have received this as a gift and I will use it but it's not one I would ask for or buy in the future. It's just not girly enough for me.
Dolce & Gabbana Classic Eau de Toilette for women was their first fragrance that they brought out.
I have had this perfume bought for me quite a few times in the past and still use it today although I don't use it everyday as I like to vary my perfumes. I find this one quite strong when you apply it and it seems to last quite a long time on the skin, you can still smell it later on in the day and also if it has got on your clothes they still smell of it after, I have a lot of silk scarves I like to wear and I find most of these smell of this perfume.
The box it comes in looks very luxurious and feels it too as it is like it is made from red velvet. It really makes you want to stroke the box and I hated chucking it away, always thinking what I could use it for but never finding anything.
The bottle is blocky and rectangular shaped and it has a red lid which pulls off and then there is a gold band around the top of the bottle.
The smell of the perfume is flowery, I am hopeless at figuring out different smells from perfume, they are either flowery or not flowery to me lol so I thought I would have a look on the web site to see what has gone into it. There seem to be so many different fragrances that they have used to make this perfume I was amazed. It seems there are the following added; Absolute Jasmine, Black Pearl Rose, Hibiscus, these are the top notes, then; Sicilian Bergamots and honeysuckle as the heart of the perfume, then; Heliotrope, Sandalwood and Musk as the bottom notes. It also says in the write up that it includes; Orange Blossom, Lily of the Valley, Vanilla, Basil, and touches of Freesia and Aldehydes. As I said before, it is very flowery lol.
I think if you like strong perfumes then give this one a try.
I cant find the perfume on sale on the Boots site but have found it on Cheap Smells web site, it says on there that the RRP is £42 and they have it for £35.95 (50 ml size) and RRP £55 their price £47.95 for 100 ml.
One time when I had this bought for me it was in a large gift box and it had some body lotion in it as well which was heavenly to use, it smelled the same as the perfume but more sensuous. I can't find this on sale on any of the sites I have looked so don't know if they still do it or not.
I would definitely give this perfume 5 stars.

Dolce and Gabanna is quite different to the fragrances i would normally wear as its quite heavy and i usually go for fresh and light scents. The bottle and box reflect the scent well for the box is a deep red velvet rectangle and the bottle is the same shape but just clear so the perfume is visible with a red lid. The fragrance is quite deep and heavy with quite a spicy smell to it, and its got a rich velvety feel to it like the box.I would say this perfume is probably for an older audience as most modern scents now are so different to this one, and thats probably why this isnt one of my favourites and i have to say has been sitting amongst my collection unused for a while. Although it is quite cheap you can pick it up now for around £10.Also this scent would be unsuitable for everydat use because its really musky so i would stick to day use, the scent also stayed with me for a long time so it has staying power. So if you want a nice sensual, deep and spicy fragrance try it who knows you might like it.
I recieved this as a present last christmas, which I wasn't too happy about as I'd never smelt it before so I was a little worried.
However I shouldn't have as I sprayed a little on my wrists and it was a very pleasent scent.
It has like a warm, far east/oriental with hints of jasmine sort of smell to it, in a small, elegant bottle.
It is quite a strong scent and lasts all day, so I wouldn't squirt too much all over yourself.
As it's now a few years old, your able to get it much cheaper than it origanally sold at.
If you shop at stores such as TJ Hughes, Homebargains and other small, local shops, you can pick it up for less than a tenner, so it's handy if your on a budget- and it makes a nice present too!
I was bought this perfume for my birthday and I just love it, it smells so nice and not too heavy. I have different perfumes but this I must say is definately my favourite. It doesn't seem to have a flowery smell like mose perfumes I could mention and it isn't too overpowering either. The fragrance seems to last all day and even gets stronger the more it settles on you. Not the cheapest you can buy but definatley worth the money.
I have so many different perfumes....all different brands, but I have to say that this is one of my favourites. The smell is absolutely gorgeous!!! Although it has a slightly 'heavier' fragrance than a lot of the modern fresh perfumes, it is very effective because the scent is so good. The smell is not really floral, more spicy and it stays well throughout the day. I think this was one of the first perfumes that Dolce & Gabanna released and they have since released a few, however having tested (and bought!) some of the others I think this original is still the best. A really nice perfume and if you keep your eyes open can often be picked up at a bargain price in places like Superdrug or the Supermarkets. Definately a perfume for when your'e on the pull!!
Must admit to being a perfume snob, stems from having a stint on the perfume counter when I first started work, over 30 years ago. I am one of those that cannot pass a perfume counter without having a spray of this or that. I have had trouble over he last few years of finding a new smell that suits me. Must be my hormones as most new perfumes smell as if the cat has done it's thing on me. Even Chanel stinks on me (the lady on the counter admitted that) Then lo and behold after a days spraying, thought oooh whats that I have tried lovely, even hubby impressed. Did some backtracking on my next outing, found it, That's the one 'Dolce and Gabbana'. It is one of the more expensive fragrances, plain but elegant deep scarlet packing. A rich sensual fragrance, but not overpowering and holds it's fragrance all day /night. Always find that you know it's good when someone asks 'what's that perfume you are wearing' and this has happened on many occasions. Did not bother to find out the techie details of the ingredients, all I know is it is just a beautiful perfume. So next time you pass a perfume counter have a spray, or maybe not, I like to keep this one to myself!
