I received a sample bottle of the Agent Provocateur L'Agent eau de parfum in a beauty box several months ago. Years ago, a colleague had given me a sample of the original Agent Provocateur perfume (named simply Agent Provocateur) and I had found it too floral and sickly for my tastes. Given that somewhat negative experience, I would never have chosen to buy or even try this in a shop, but when I received this little sample size I thought I'd keep an open mind and give it a go.
The full sized bottle is very similar to that of the original perfume, but has a sort of ombre effect, where the base is darker, gradually becoming pinker towards the top of the bottle. The shape of the bottle is nice and I prefer the colours of this one to the original, but I don't think it's one of those perfume bottles which makes you think 'wow' if you know what I mean.
The official description of this perfume is 'A provocative potion, dark and mysterious, that captures your senses in a flight of florals, intoxicationg amber and erotic musk.'
The card that accompanied by mini bottle tells me that the top notes of this perfume are davana oil, baies rose and ylang ylang. I had never heard of davana oil but a quick search online tells me that it is an oil from the stems of plants which can vary in scent but tends to have a 'masculine floral' smell or a woody, balsamic odour. Given this information, I do think it's the davana oil I can smell when this is initially applied to the skin. The perfume smells more like an aftershave at first, with a woody-floral fragrance that has a slight sharpness to it coming across. Although it is probably not something I would have chosen for myself and is nothing like the sweet, fruity perfumes I tend to prefer, I am surprised to find that I quite like it.
As it settles on the skin, the heart notes of the perfume begin to emerge. These are geranium bourbon, rose de mai and jasmine sambac. The jasmine and the rose combine to give a beautiful floral heart, which is mixed with something much deeper and muskier. I am surprised that I think the scent is really quite beautiful, it would be a good one for date nights as it has that sort of sensual smell to it - I think exotic might be a good description.
Base notes of this scent are patchouli (my pet hate, but I can't smell it here, so I don't mind too much), sandalwood and amber crystals. I think the amber comes out the most, but there is a sort of creamy woody scent to the fragrance which I recognise as being sandalwood.
Overall I was surprised at how much I liked this fragrance. I honestly thought I would hate it as much as the original but it's beautiful and I think the feminine notes of rose and jasmine work well against the more masculine notes of davana oil and amber. I definitely see this as a night time fragrance, it is slightly on the heavy side, so it's not something I would wear during the day, not to mention that I think it's quite special so should be saved for nights out. As it is on the heavy side I find that I only need to apply a tiny amount each time and the staying power is very good - it always stays on all night long.
The fragrance is quite widely available, a quick search shows it is stocked by House of Fraser, The Perfume Shop, and feelunique.com. The cheapest prices I found are from cheapsmells.com (which I use all the time and is a genuine, reliable website). Prices as follows:
50ml - £38.25 (RRP £50)
100ml - £48.50 (RRP £70)
As you can see, not the cheapest perfume on the market, and seeing as it's one I would probably only use on special occasions rather than day to day, I'm not sure if I would use this enough to get my moneys worth. The scent was only released in 2011, so I think when it has been around a while the price may come down a little as I've noticed this often happens with other scents.
So to sum up, I really like this fragrance and would recommend it. Even if you hated the original like I did, don't let that put you off trying this. It's a lovely scent, slightly unusual and great for anyone looking for a new evening perfume.
