I am a firm champion of the great Tesco value products and I refuse to buy into the hype of their "finest" range (lets ignore the fact that I do not fit the criteria necessary to be included into this target market). But I think I may have just found my guilty pleasure and it's only priced at 65pence per tub or if I'm feeling really naughty 5 tubs for £3.00! Now I am generally a no fuss, no frills girl but clearly I have an underlying desire for for the finer things in life and much as it pains me to admit this Tesco have come up trumps with this gem of a yoghurt.
I hate going into too much detail in my reviews about packaging but I feel that at the very least it deserves a mention. It's not like any other bog standard yoghurt in a cheap plastic tub, no this dreamy yoghurt is tucked snuggly into a recyclable sturdy cardboard tub with foil lid (surely the mark of a superior yoghurt?) so already I am taking an interest.
It is clear from the minute you peel back the lid that it is a high quality product and the first taste reassures you that this is something quite special. Made with Channel Island whipping cream and fresh hazelnuts with a creamy, velvety consistency that just melts in the mouth. It's thick but not gloopy or stodgy and it has a rich taste thats dominated by a full hazelnut flavour (fresh flavour not artificial or synthetic tasting) complimented by an acceptable amount of chunky hazelnut pieces. It's branded a yoghurt but it is more of an indulgent dessert not unlike a fool or syllabub.

This is a wonderfully indulgent yoghurt for occassional enjoyment not an everyday yoghurt unless of course you are not phased by the calorific values! It's irresistably yummy but it should come with a government health warning stating "If The Calories Don't Kill You The Guilt Will !"
A wicked yogurt from the Tesco Finest range is one I never thought I'd like and only brought it because they are on offer where you get 6 for £3.00 and that's good because they're 60p each so I thought I'd try some flavours I wouldn't usually buy.
The hazelnut yogurt is gorgeous. It's made of 13% whipping cream and is very thick and rich as you eat it, it has a creamy consistancy that makes it more of a desset than a yogurt to me. It's proper nutty all the way through, the yogurt tastes nutty and there are crunchy pieces of hazelnut mixed in with it. The yogurt is that thick that if you give it a good stir before you start eating then you'll get some nuts in every spoon.
I think the hazelnuts are coated in sugar or something because they taste very sweet and have got a bit of a baked sugar texture. They go sooooo good with the smooth nutty yogurt and the hazelnuts aren't gritty like they are in a nut yogurt I got in M&S ages ago because that put me off nutty yogurts for ages.
The yogurt is delish. You can taste the cream in it, it's smooth and has got a rich nutty flavour that is very sweet but is also very natural tasting and the hazelnut pieces taste of nut as well to complete the flavour. Deep inside the yogurt I think there is a faint golden syrup flavour that is an aftertaste for me but my mum couldn't taste it at all so you'll have to look out for it.
I have eaten a few of the Finest yogurts since the offer started and I think this is the most sickly of all of them and I was surprised at that because it seems dead light when you first start eating it, it soon gets very sweet though and I was feeling bloated by the time I got to the end of the pot. That's weird because this one is very rich but doesn't taste as thick or clogging as some of the other flavours so it's weird this is the only one that was a bit too much for me.
THere's 12.2g fat in a pot of the hazelnut yogurt and 240 calories and that's loads for a yogurt but the cream, butter and sugar are the cause of that and you've got to expect it to be a bit lardier than a boring thin fat free yogurt because it's so thick and creamy.
I do like yoghurt as a snack or pudding but had become rather bored with my budgeted cheap varieties and as I had a smaller online shop than usual , decided to treat myself to 5 various flavours of tesco finest yoghurt - I managed tp peruade myself I was still bagging a bargain as they are currently on offer at 5 for £3, but as they are 0.64p each this is a megre saving of 0.20p!
I do find that on the odd ocassion I indulge in an item from the Tesco finest range I can usually tell that it is higher quality so I was full of anticipation when I went to try this out yesterday.
Some nutritional info
This is not to be eaten as part of a calorie controlled diet! - A whopping 240 calories, 22g of sugar and 12.2g of fat. If you ate 3 pots of this in one day you would have eaten your entire allowance of saturated fat , three quaters of your sugar allowance and nearly half your calorie allowance so it's defiantely a treat to have in moderation!
The main ingrediants as stated on the pot are milk and nuts no real surprises here. The milk is sourced from channel island. At this point it will be obvious that this product is unsuitable for people with nut allergies!
What is it like
I eagerly peeled off the lid to reveal a creamy thick yoghurt with plenty of good sized pieces of hazelnut but no real tempting smell . The first thing I noticed was that this really is incredibly thick and creamy and tastes heavenly - creamy, rich , sweet but not too sweet and very nutty, they certainly haven't scrimped on the nuts and it is a very filling and fullfilling desert - it is not one I would really have as a snack but to finish off a dinner once in a while I can see no harm!
This is definately a luxury pudding and worthy of the "finest" title.
Tesco finest hazelnut yogurt blended with Channel Island cream
The carton is waxed card so quite good on the recycling front. The lid is a thin plastic pull off lid. The lid is plain black with only the words 'West Country Yogurt' and in the middle of the lid in an oval are these words 'Blended with Channel Island Cream'
The front of the carton has a dark, rather sensuous look to it with a picture of fresh hazelnuts' and a hazelnut leaf in the middle of a black background. The words Tesco finest are on the dark background. The bottom is grey with Hazelnut Yogurt and the colour coded contents list. All other information is on the back of the pot which is a white background.
On the carton it states:
'Yogurt and whipping cream blended with pieces of hazelnut. Made with Channel Island cream and crunchy pieces of hazelnut.'
When you first open the pot there is no smell that is distinct but the look is creamy and thick with lots of quite decent sized brown pieces of hazelnut.
On dipping my spoon in, my mouth started to water in preparation for the creamy yogurt taste. The spoon could sit quite upright in the yogurt as it is very thick - must be the Channel island cream. It certainly has a thicker consistency than the low fat versions. I suspect it has a greater number of calories too but hey, I do love creamy yogurt as it tastes so much better.
The bits of hazelnut are fresh tasting and quite big, they crunch as you chew them. They also don't have the slightly bitter taste that some hazelnut yogurts seem to have. There are quite a few pieces in each tub, you get at least two sometimes three biggish pieces in each teaspoonful so it is quite a crunchy mouthful.
The yogurt is very creamy, thick and rich. It is quite sweet and looking at the list of ingredients sugar is first which is a bit worrying. Most yogurts have a tart taste but this one does not. It is more like a cream desert than a yogurt. It is very delicious but possibly not a healthy option. It is the kind of yogurt I treat myself to as a desert rather than a healthy breakfast option. There is a lot of cream - therefore fat, and also a lot of sugar too.
Each pot of 150g contains:
240 calories - 12% of daily allowance
22.7 g of sugar - 25% of daily allowance (now I see where the sweetness comes from)
12.2g fat - 17% of daily allowance
6.7g saturates -34% of daily allowance (oops - not too healthy)
0.2g salt - 4% of daily allowance
The colour guide also tells us what % of your daily allowance each of these constituents provide which I have put beside in the list above.
On the back of the carton Allergy advice : contains milk - Well no great surprise you would have to be very stupid not to realise Channel Island cream was a milk based product.
It also states 'Recipe: Contains hazelnut - may contain traces of nuts - Again surely that is stating the obvious but I guess they have to state this by law.
It is also suitable for vegetarians.

I've now finished the extremely delicious creamy desert and have thoroughly enjoyed it despite the fact that I will have to walk for miles to use up the calorific content! I put my nose in the carton and sniffed and the overwhelming aroma is that of honey or caramelised sugar, a toffee kind of smell. I'm not sure that yogurt has much of a smell - a bit sour milky that is about it - if the yogurt is plain that is. If yogurt is flavoured with fruit then it tends to smell rather of that fruit that is strawberry smell if it strawberry and cherry if it is cherry flavoured. Hazelnut doesn't really have a smell so maybe that is why this doesn't smell of much else except caramelised sugar.
Anyway I am rambling on now. I am not going to list the contents etc on the back - you can read them for yourselves in the photo. In summary I would thoroughly recommend this yogurt as a very delicious creamy desert but it is certainly not one to be recommended as a diet desert or for anyone on a fat reduced diet.
I have tried nutty yoghurt once before and didn't like it but thought I would give this one a go. It is Tesco Finest and this range usually delivers tasty treats. I did not like this at all though. To me, yoghurt should be fruity. The hazelnut taste was quite strong and just didn't go with the creamy yoghurt.
The yoghurt itself is made from Channel Island Cream and it does taste and feel really rich and creamy. It is a good quality yoghurt base.
The hazelnut is still in pieces so you don't just get a nutty flavour but can actually chew the nuts. They stay quite crunchy in the yoghurt - not sure how they manage to pull that one off but they do.
The taste is very nutty and quite sweet.

These are 68 pence for a 150g pot. Pretty expensive but probably worth it for nutty yoghurt lovers. I just don't like nuts in yoghurt but if you do, this will definitely appeal. It's a very good quality product.
When I was in Tesco's at the weekend I decided to treat myself to a pot of hazelnut yoghurt. It is a flavour that I have always really liked but don't often buy these days as that particular flavour never forms part of any of the multi packs that I normally buy.
The one I decided to try this time is the Tesco Finest Hazelnut Yoghurt at 68p for a pot containing 150g.
The pot itself is quite unusual in shape as it is oval rather than the more usual round or square ones. The peel off lid is plastic and shows a picture of hazelnuts (you don't say!) together with the use by date, the flavour of the yoghurt and information telling us that this is a 'West Country yoghurt blended with Channel Island cream' and containing 'sweet and crunchy pieces of hazelnut'.
The front of the cardboard pot has the same picture as the one on the lid and tells us the same information with the addition of the now familiar nutritional values expressed as a percentage of your recommended daily allowance.
On the back there is a list of ingredients together with more nutritional information.
This yoghurt is suitable for vegetarians but obviously NOT for those with a nut allergy! LOL! As with all yoghurts it should be kept refrigerated but must not be frozen. I have never tried freezing a pot of yoghurt but I assume that it would separate when it was defrosted.
I peeled off the lid - and licked it of course - and found that the yoghurt looked very appealing. It was a creamy colour and the pieces of hazelnut were clearly visible.
I took my spoon and in I went for the taste test.
Again the creaminess of the whole thing was immediately apparent. The hazelnut pieces were indeed sweet and crunchy as promised and the whole thing blended together in a most pleasing flavour. It was just sweet enough for me without going over the top and becoming sickly. I found it very enjoyable but nothing as special as I had expected for the price and the fact that it was Tesco's Finest so I probably wouldn't buy this version of hazelnut yoghurt again.
