“ Cheesecake. „
I wasn't fond of cheesecakes until I tried Frü lemon cheesecake. I don't know too much about the brand but I know that it is of premium quality, delicious and not very cheap. Actually we received this cheesecake as a present. We had a beef stew party and the stew I cooked was so delicious that nobody could eat any desert so the lemon cheesecake survived the party and we had it for dinner. The cheesecakes come in a yellowish cardboard box. Inside the box there are two transparent glass pots. They are covered with silver foil and it is easy to open it. The cheesecake in the pot is fresh and delicious. Despite being a lemon cheesecake it is not completely sour. The cheesecake has a delicious buttery biscuit crumbs base. The second layer is tart lemon curd ant it is topped with the creamy cheesecake with real lemon zest. The tastes of the layers fit each other very well and the whole cheesecake is extremely delicious and you feel that you could eat some more. The pot contains only 90 g cheesecake. The two pots cost 3 pounds in Sainsbury's so it is quite expensive. The ingredients are: Lemon Cheesecake (61%): Cream Cheese (24%), Whipping Cream, Sugar, Pasteurised Whole Egg, Lemon Juice (3%), Cornflour, Water, Lemon Zest (0.4%), Preservatives (Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate), Biscuit Base (22%): Biscuit Crumb (Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oil, Sugar, Wholemeal Flour, Raising Agents (Sodium Bicarbonate, Ammonium Bicarbonate, Tartaric Acid, Disodium Diphosphate, Malic Acid), Invert Sugar Syrup, Salt, Dried Whey Powder, Dried Malt Extract), Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Butter (0.5%), Lemon Curd (17%): Sugar, Pasteurised Whole Egg, Butter, Vegetable Oil, Lemon Juice (2%), Pasteurised Egg Yolk, Modified Maize Starch, Water, Preservatives (Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate). One pot of this lovely cheesecake contains 318 kcal energy. It is less then a chocolate bar anyway. What I liked in this cheesecake apart from the delicious cheesecake is the glass pot. You can simply recycle it if you want to but you can use it to prepare jelly or pudding in them. We have now 4 of them so I think I will keep them and use them to make delicious deserts for the family. They are very handy. This cheesecake definitely tastes better than the shop's own brand cheesecake but I think it is too expensive. It is worth preparing it at home. Cheesecakes are not very challenging so despite its wonderful lemon taste I will not stick to it.
I love these deserts. They cost £2.98 for two but they are so worth it. They are part of the same company that make the gu puddings, which are also really nice. I don't think they are too healthy but I don't really look at things like that, I wouldn't recommend eating loads of them but once in a while a bit of indulgence can't hurt. The great thing about these deserts is that they come in little glass ramekins, which you can easily wash out and keep, so the £2.98 is actually a really good price. The taste of these cheesecakes is amazing, they are so fresh and zingy, they really have a lemony kick to them. They are definitely a wake up for the taste buds. They are also quite light, so you don't feel like you have eaten something really fatty after wards. The biscuit base was a tad soggy, I like mine a bit crunchier, but I think that is just down to personal tastes, but it still tasted very buttery and delicious. A great indulgent treat.
Whilst in Tesco earlier today stocking up on milk and essentials to see us into the New Year I made the fatal mistake of checking out the deserts in the chiller cabinets. Having previously purchased and reviewed the chocolate desserts from GU my eye was immediately drawn to a different product from what must be their sister range - FRU Fruity Puds - Zesty Lemon Cheesecakes. Cheesecake is a weakness of mine I must confess and having adored the chocolate puddings before I wasted no time in adding a box of 2 of these mini puddings into my basket and having just devoured one I wanted to share my thoughts on these cheesecakes. As you can see in the picture above and similar to the GU packaging these do come in an attractive rectangular box that looks of premium quality. The design is simplistic with an illustration of the cheesecakes contained within and the box is white in colour. The information on the box advises that the contents are "2 Zesty Lemon Cheesecakes Made with lots of juicy lemons served in glass ramekins" and that each pot contains 90 grams. Taking the contents out of the box they are indeed served in individual, glass ramekins which look of good quality, you can see the biscuit base of the cheesecake, a decent thickness of the actual cheese and a sprinkling of brown sugar on top and I have to say first impressions were impressive. To my eye it looked a quality, premium desert that would not look out of place being served in a restaurant or for sale as an individual desert in an upper end bakery/patisserie. Taking a spoon to the desert and you notice that the consistency is thick but not sticky, my spoon glided through the cheese into the waiting biscuit base and that gave way with minimal effort. Taking my first taste I noticed the sweetness of the sugar contrasting with the fruity zesty lemon cheese and the richness of the flaky biscuit base. It was delicious and tasted completely fresh with no artificial aftertaste or unpleasant flavours. My only concern about these gorgeous little pots of goodness is the calorie and fat content, at 318 calories and 22.5 grams of fat of which 12.4 grams are saturates these are definitely on the hefty side and I can't in all good conscience say that I would buy these on a regular basis. Although absolutely delicious with the added bonus of being able to reuse the ramekins again I am in two minds about these overall and because of this can't give them a five star rating, for taste they would certainly get 5 out of 5 but the nutritional content does let them down, so from me a fair rating evens itself out at 3/5 Dooyoo stars. To summarise: Recommended for taste, but not for the calories these were on special offer in Tesco today at £2.00 for a box of 2, the normal price is £2.99 when not on offer which is on the steep side when compared with other deserts but paying a premium price does in this case give you a premium desert. Try them if you're not watching your weight or are unconcerned about the content, you won't regret it if you are fond of cheesecake.
Today to celebrate a pleasing weigh-in at Weight Watchers I decided to buy myself a nice treat from Sainsbury's, convincing myself in a completely unconvincing way that a Frü cheesecake would be healthier than a chocolate pudding. Of course, the lemon is used in conjunction with so much cream, sugar and butter that I could have had the chocolate pudding for roughly the same calories - but, boy, am I glad I opted for the Sicilian Lemon Cheesecake desserts. The first thing I liked about these cheesecakes is that they are sold in individual glass ramekins which can be reused and look absolutely lovely, I can envisage plenty of summery desserts being created in the i_am_joy kitchen and served in these attractive Frü dishes. The cheesecakes, however, are even better than the dishes! It was absolutely delicious; wonderfully lemony with a zesty yet sweet flavour which complimented the buttery biscuit base to perfection. The texture of the lemon cheesecake is moist yet nicely firm, worth a mention as compared to some very sloppy cheesecakes I bought from Tesco this seems positively luxurious. I hadn't realised when I bought them that the cheesecake actually has three layers which are the biscuit base, typical cheesecake layer and then a layer of what can only be described as a tangy lemon curd. Each layer compliments the other perfectly; the lemon layer is very zesty and just the right side of 'too sour' in my opinion, while the cheesecake is more subtly lemon flavoured which serves to intensify the citrus flavour. The base is a delight, it's a soft biscuit base which has also soaked up the flavour of lemon to finish off this dessert beautifully. The whole cheesecake is completely lemon flavoured and for a lemon lover like me, this is perfect! The dessert is sweet, but not sugary in the slightest and most of the sweetness is covered over by the tanginess of the lemon anyway which is absolutely the overwhelming flavour in these wonderful little puddings. I particularly like the fact that the cheesecake has been finished off with a sprinkling of crumbled biscuit which makes a lovely contrast in the textures of the otherwise very soft and creamy dessert. Now, going back to my first paragraph I can tell you that nutritionally this dessert is probably as high as if I'd chosen a chocolate one. Each small cheesecake (and they are small!) contains 352 calories and 25.2g of fat - it's completely worth it though for the taste sensation it provides!
Cheesecakes are sometimes sickly sweet and that might rule them out as a dessert choice for many people. I enjoy a cheesecake if the base is firm and the topping is slightly tart, it seems to detract from that cloying sweetness. `Fru` make outstanding desserts and they haven't let their public down with this individual Lemon cheescake. Two 90g cheesecakes check in at £2.99, so by no means a budget pudding, the only theory I have to work to if I buy these is that old adage `You get what you pay for`. The two puddings come in a well designed cardboard box, no mistaking their makers as the name `Fru` has pride of place on the box alongside a picture of the lemon dessert. Each pudding is extremely well presented in a clear glass ramekin. As you look to the side of the ramekin you can clearly see the fine grained biscuit base and the lush lemon cheese sitting on the top in a deep layer. On top of the `Fru` cheesecake nothing exotic seems to be happening, but if you have a spare lemon then take your zesting tool and run it along the waxy lemon skin and put a little heap of zest on the top, it makes the already classic look even classier. The cream cheese already contains a host of citric ingredients and it has a good `bite`. Think Fresh tart Lemon curd and then you will have the `Fru` Lemon cheesecake taste summed up well. The `Fru` cheesecake needs to be served chilled, a dish that can be served to any Vegetarian but they do warn that it might contain traces of nuts and also contains gluten wheat, eggs and milk. The ramekins will come in useful for many things afterwards, so just wash them out and put them in your cupboard. Each pot contains 352 calories and the cheesecake is high in fats and sugars. `Fru` have now produced some Summer fruit puddings that contain less than 100 calories each. They describe their puds as `adult` puddings and have created Berry and Vanilla cheesecakes and Wild Blueberry cheesecakes too. Their range includes a `Flirty Berry pot` and a newly introduced Strawberry and Raspberry trifle. A mouthwatering moist mini lemon cake and a mini carrot cake are a popular part of their range. The larger frozen family cheesecakes are ideal for most occasions, they represent good value for money. Some of the supermarket own brands can be bought from as little as £1 and have six servings. A sensible option for a family pudding. `Fru` on the other-hand could step in for that special occasion, an anniversary or a birthday dinner. If you were economical with the truth you could even pass it off as home made!
It is nice to traet yourself occasionally and at £3 for two relatively small servings these cheesecakes are definately a bit of a treat not least because they taste heavenly. Each cheesecake comes in a small glass jar which afterwards I have used as candle holders as it seems a total waste to throw them into the recycling bin straight away You can really taste the Sicilian lemons in thsi product as that is the dominant taste that you get throughout, the zingy bite of the lemons is wonderfully complemented by the lovely smooth cream cheese that has a very rich taste and a wonderful texture with slight traces of lemon curd in it as well. The biscuit base of the cheesecake is very substantial and nice and firm with a slight moistness due to the lemon juice. Apart from the price the only other negative is the fact that it is rather fattening at 353 calories per serving and it is alo quite rich and filling so as a treat it is great but the guilt afterwards is something you just have to live with.
Having come back to my Dads house I am now having to live under his rules, sadly one of which is that when he goes shopping he always has to bring back a creamy dessert of some kind for sunday lunch (this is why we all need to diet in this house!). As today I had the pleasure of being his taxi service me and my rattling micra and himself headed to our local tesco. Luckily given he was escorted I got him passed the cream cake section and on to the yoghurts - I almost got him to buy those, but instead he spotted these, on the top shelf. They come in a distinctive white box, from the side is a very tempting picture of the cheesecake and lemons, this fills around 1/3 of the space the other 2/3 are taken up with the name of the puddings, Frü Fruity Puds, and then a short description of the contents, 2 zesty lemon cheesecakes, made with lots of juicy lemons, served in glass ramekins. The top of the box simply is half and half the picture from the side enlarged and Frü Fruity Puds at the side. All sounds very nice and looks good so we decided to buy them - after all lemon cheesecake is rather summery. Getting home as is also usual the stresses of a weekend shopping trip has taken its toll on the older member of the family, and he needs a sit down, nice cuppa and something sweet to make him feel better, so lets give up on the nice dessert idea (again this is usual for him). Out come the cheesecakes. Once out of the packaging they still look very inviting in their glass dishes, the layers of biscuit, lemon curd and creamy cheesey bit look mouthwateringly good from the side, from the top you see a further sprinkling of crushed biscuit. They have over the top a domed plastic lid to protect them, and help retain their freshness. Removing the lid you get a lovely smell of lemons. And if you didn't have a watery mouth before you do now (as well as a lively dog to contend with - bleedin' animal loves fruit). Putting your spoon in to the top reveals that the cheescake has a nice firm texture and isn't too moist as some can be. The smell is getting stronger and zestier, the taste is perfectly balanced between zesty lemon and the creamy cheese topping. The only let down was the buttery biscuit base as this was slightly too moist for my liking, I prefer my cheesecakes to have a slightly crunch to the base (but I may have been spoiled by my mums homemade cheesecakes). Splitting the layers so as to taste them individually the cheesy layer is very creamy almost too much so, and the lemony layer is very zesty and has no artifical taste to it at least not to my mind and is straddling the line between sweet and tart perfectly. But still it tastes much better with a good mix of all the layers. Sadly all too soon it is gone, though an aftertaste of lemon remains for some time (even after drinking a cup of tea I can still detect the lemon in my mouth). Each pud is around 100g, and wouldn't look out of place served at a restaurant given that it is prepacked in a glass ramekin and even bought at a supermarket is very much at restaurant prices as the box of two will cost you almost £3 (it's £2.79), which is alot for a small dessert in anyones book, but I suppose the cost of the ramekins must be an influencing factor in this. How much would a set of ramekins cost anyway? They are also totally unsuitable for anyone planning a healthy diet as they contain 352 kcal per dessert and 25.2g fat! They also contain wheat, soya and traces of nuts as well as the fairly obvious milk. If you can manage not to eat them straight away they must be stored in a fridge, and can be kept around 2 weeks (ours had a date of 8/5/07) but tasting this good I can't see that anyone will have them sitting around so long. Frü also sell other fruity desserts but I have only ever seen the Lemon cheesecakes in Tesco's (both the Ashford branch and Horwich where we were today) or Sainsbury's so if you want to try the others it might be worth paying a visit to their website to see if they have a list of stockists for the full range. This is also the company who produce the Gü range of chocolate puddings (he also bought a box of the Chocolate Soufflé's to try at a later date). Though I have just discovered 8 of the Frü/Gü ramekins in my Dad's cupboard so he may not be as new to them as he claimed. He now says they sent samples to the office when the company became one of their clients - maybe I need to go to see him at work more if they get this kind of samples!
I spotted Frü Fruity Puds for the first time in Tesco the other day. They had boxes on a special offer at 2 for £4. Fancying something tasty and summery, I decided to take advantage of the offer and give the puds a try. WHAT ARE THEY? Frü Fruity Puds are cheesecakes, made with delicious sicilian lemons. If you like lemons, you will like definitely like these. In a box, you get two individual cheesecake puddings, each served in its own glass ramekin and plastic lid for added freshness. PACKAGING Visually, the packaging is very appealing. As the picture shows, half of the box is taken up with an enticing image showing one of the cheesecakes and lots of lovely lemons in the background. The other half is equally striking but in a different way. The 'Frü' name appears in bold black script and is set against a pure white background, which really makes it stand out. In case you haven't guessed, Frü Fruity Puds are made by the same people who make the delicious Gü chocolate puddings. There is a definite poshness about the packaging, but not in an off-putting kind of way. On the back of the box, you'll find a nice tongue-in-cheek description of the puds. They are described as 'easy peasy lemon cheesy' and 'zingy little beauties' which taste 'multo frü-tissimo' - 'very fruity' to you and me! The people who make Frü puds seem to like this play on words, and you'll find other examples of words where a 'u' has been replaced by a German umlauted 'ü'. Could it be that the 'ü' is meant to resemble a smiling face or is it done just to make the 'u' look posher? Whatever the reason, it is strangely eye-catching but it is a good way of advertising the brand. ONTO THE PUD... On removing the cheesecake from the box, you will notice that it is constructed by a series of different layers. As you would expect, the bottom layer is a crumbly biscuit base. Then comes a nice layer of lemon curd and a generous portion of creamy cheesecake, which is finished off with a sprinkling of crushed biscuit pieces over the top. Sitting in the glass ramekin, the cheesecake looks very impressive and almost too good to touch... But then it's not there to be admired - it's there to be eaten, so let's get on with it! THE EATING EXPERIENCE Delving my spoon into the cheesecake reveals a firm, creamy-looking cheesecake, with a pleasantly moist texture. It doesn't smell very lemony but has an unmistakable lemon flavour, with a lovely citrusy tang which comes through in the aftertaste. The cheesecake is not as bitter as I expected it to be, but this is probably because the creamy cream cheese quells the tangy lemon flavour. Next comes the lemon curd layer. I don't normally like lemon curd, but this one is very tasty and has just the right level of sweetness. Overall, it complements the layer of cheesecake very well indeed and, in my opinion, there is just the right amount. Too much would have overpowered the creaminess of the cheesecake, spoiling the whole taste experience. Finally, there is the biscuit base. For me, this is probably the most disappointing part of the pudding. Although it has a nice, buttery flavour, it is not as crunchy as I would have liked it and, if anything, is too moist. Because they are made from glass, it is important to handle the ramekins with extreme care. Remember...you can re-use the ramekins if you want. WHAT I THINK... Overall, I enjoyed eating these lemon cheesecake puddings and recommend them as a summery treat. However, I cannot help but think that they are somewhat overpriced, costing £2.79 per box. As I said at the outset, I bought two boxes (containing 4 puds) for £4 and even this was a little pricy. But £2.79 for just one box. You must be joking! I would not normally be prepared to pay this - although I expect that the cost of ramekins is the main reason for the high overall price. If you pay a high price, then expect high quality.Don't moan about the price. Buy the cheap crap if you want to, butagain don't moan about the taste of these cheap and nasty cheesecakes. The Frü Sicilian Lemon Cheesecake, is an expensive cheesecake,so expect quality.people who buy these then complain about the price, do so just to moan. You don't have to buy them.Buy something else cheaper.You only buy these type of expensive products on special occasions, not every week.
A few days ago I reviewed the GU Chocolate and Vanilla Cheesecake and as some of the content of that review is relevant here it has been repeated after all it is my review on which I own the copyright so I can use it how I like. Currently in Tesco there is an offer on to buy two for £4 which is a saving of £1 on the normal purchase price and alongside the choc and vanilla cheesecake I also bought the Sicilian Lemon Cheesecakes. Packaging Normally Im not too bothered about the packaging as long as it protects the product after all it will end up in either the recycle bin or the dustbin but with this product it does need a mention. In each box you get two cheesecakes and each one is contained in a small glass jar with a plastic lid. From an aesthetic viewpoint this is a nice touch and indeed means you could probably get away with serving them at a diner party straight from the box but I cannot help but feel that this presentation over function does add to the cost of the product. Cost is my only real criticism of this product hence the mention. Taste Texture and Presentation My God this product tastes good; I would gladly sell one of the ankle biters for a years supply and liposuction to extract all the fat I would consume. It is supposed to be made with Sicilian lemons however wherever they are from they certainly give the cheesecake a lovely zingy taste and you can really taste the combination of lemons alongside the cream cheese. From a presentation viewpoint this is pretty basic looking with a single layer of cheesecake sitting on top of a biscuit base. The top of the cheesecake has a light sprinkling of biscuit as well however this is just for effect and adds nothing to the taste of the product. The previous product I reviewed I moaned about the fact that the biscuit base was too thin and tasteless however this is not the case with the lemon cheesecake which has a slightly more substantial biscuit base which is slightly moist from the lemon juice in the product and this also gives it a lovely fresh flavour. The cheesecake itself is absolutely delicious, it has a creamy yet slightly crumbly texture and the combination of the sharp lemon flavour and the smooth rich taste of the cream cheese just makes this one of life indulgencies that should not be missed. To give it an extra lemon taste there are very thin strands of lemon curd within the layer of cheesecake. At first I thought I would be tempted to eat both at once however once I started eating the cheesecake I realised this would not be the case as it was very rich in taste and certainly as a dessert after my evening meal there was no desire to eat a second once I had finished. One explanation for why these are small yet filling can be found in the fact that each pot has a rather large 26 grams of fat in them and 353 calories but then what did you expect this is all about indulgence not weight watchers and it is less fattening that the chocolate and vanilla cheesecake. The product is suitable for vegetarians and may contain traces of nuts and definitely does contain wheat, milk, eggs and soya for those with any intolerance. My only reason for not giving this product five stars is the cost which for the amount you get is on the expensive side but it does pretty work out cheaper than buying cheesecake in a restaurant and it tastes a whole lot better than most other supermarket lemon cheesecakes. The packaging means that you could probably get away with serving them at a dinner party and they go equally well with an afternoon cup of coffee. If you do buy this product make sure you recycle the pots however in my case they were immediately appropriated by my daughter to use to grow crystals in.
