“ Brand: Asda / Type: Syrup „
One of my vices in life is pancakes. I adore them and thankfully my bestmate/flatmate makes up amazing ones for us rather often. Of course you can have lots of different toppings and fillings within them and on them and that but I always ALWAYS go with golden syrup and up until recently I always purchased the good stuff! However with recently trying to tighten my belt (well not literally or I guess I wouldn't be buying this at all lol!) I decided to pick up a more economy option when browsing the shelves in Asda. This costing 77p a jar suited me and my purse well and I thought it had to be worth a trial run. However I didn't notice that a slightly smaller 'tin' of Lyles Golden syrup was only 23p more at the time and had I of done I would have bought that as its my personal favourite! The Packaging: The golden syrup comes in a see-through glass jar that has a gold coloured twist on/off lid to the top of it concealing a large hole. Around the jar there is a white and bright green label and on the front of it we are of course told that it is Asda 'Smart Price' Golden Syrup 'Partially inverted refiners syrup' and that it is suitable for Vegetarians and is 680g in weight (and the only size this is avaiable to purchase in to the best of my knowledge). Other infrmation listed towards the back of the jar includes ingredients and storage advice, there is a full nutritional chart shown and contact details for Asda are listed. It is a cheap looking, chunky jar though good to be able to see the syrup though it and of course the information listed is informative as it needs to be! The Golden Syrup Itself: As the name suggests this is a golden colour and it is transparent, it is runny but with a bit of body to it and easy to get out of the jar. Sticky with a sweet, sugary and with a traditional syrupy smell I find this rather runny compared to better quality and named brands. Taste wise this is ok really. To me I have more of a problem with its consitency to be honest than the actual sugary flavour. Yes it tastes like sweet syrup and really is really sweet but in a very natural way. Its smooth too however when this meets warm/hot foods the runny consitency it has to begin with really melts bad like water and doesn't look good and is right messy. To me although it tastes okish it isn't thick enough for me and I feel that this should be a pourable syrup in a bottle or something. I would buy this only again to say cook with...I'm sure it has its uses but this isn't for me and my beloved pancakes sadly!
