A fantastic fish tank ornament from Pets At Home.

I love pets and in particular I absolutely love helping my husband with the decorations in our fish tank. When we first starting keeping fish we had a smaller fish tank and because of this we were limited to small ornaments and plants just to avoid overcrowding the tank. One ornament that we used for around a year, on and off, was this column ruins ornament. We bought our ornament back in 2011 from Pets At Home for around £6.00 on a buy 3 for the price of 2 offer. We have stocked up on numerous ornaments over the past 18 months or so and recently I have been cleaning through our collection of ornaments and selling some on a local Facebook selling site to make way for a larger sunken ship that I have my eye on. We picked this particular ornament because we have something of a ruin look going on at one point in our tank. We have also have a Spongebob theme running through it at one time and now we just have lots of large plants and bigger ornaments that we love without having a specific theme at any one time. This ornament is made from polyresin, as are many of the ornaments that we have used, and stands at approximately 8cm high, 8cm wide and 4cm deep. This made it an ideal smaller ornament for our first ever tank and we have used this for several months on and off in our newer, much larger tank also. Polyresin allows ornaments to be very durable, as this one was for all the time that we used it, and it stops the ornaments being damaging to fish or polluting the water. This was very lightweight, at under 100 grams but it stood down at the bottom of the tank without falling over or moving at all unless knocked by myself or my husband. This ruins ornament is in a T shape and there are six complete columns. The columns are spaced evenly apart enough and allowed my smaller fish to swim between them with ease if they chose too. Generally my fish preferred to just sleep right next to this in one of the corners perhaps to give them a little bit of shelter. Obviously I really liked the look of this ornament when I picked it and we picked up 6 different ornaments, if I remember correctly, in one trip because there were lots of different themed ornaments that we really liked. The colours of this are rustic looking with beige, grey and other dull colours mixed in together. This makes the columns have a distressed looking and is really fitting with there being particularly damaged columns too. There are some damaged looking edges (that are not sharp at all) and there are even some cracks around the ruins to make them look more distressed and generally older than they would without them. Overall I really enjoyed this ornament. I have just recently sold it making £4.00 back on it and after a good scrub it was almost as good as new. Obviously it is a little difficult to tell if much damage has occurred to this in the time that I was using it because I just gave it a scrub under warm running water and any green that had built up on it was scrubbed off easily enough with just a bit of elbow grease! The detail that was applied to this ornament was fantastic and this was one ornament I was reluctant to part with, however we had so many ornaments I had to cut back on some of the smaller ones to allow more room for the larger ones and also to cut back on how many things I was storing for the fish tank! While using this ornament I was really pleased with the quality of this and how well it added to my rustic theme - when I was doing this. Because this ornament is nice and small, by yet detailed, it looked great in my fish tank and I would definitely recommend it. This ornament gets 5/5 stars from me and it is worthy of every single one!

Very nice detail on this ornament and practical.

I bought this for my daughter's fish tank after looking at the other larger ornaments for fish tanks. This one has worked out the best because it is very open and doesn't allow the fish to hide behind it. My daughter only has two fish and previously she had a ruined cube with plastic plant life on it and the fish were always swimming in and around it to give them some natural cover. Instead this one allows the fish to be seen when they come out in the open. We have another ornament that allows them a bit of privacy. It is made very well and the detail on these Corinthian columns is really very good considering it is a tank ornament. It also positions very well in the water and doesn't fall over or move if the water moves. It has to be bedded into the gravel a bit but then you have to do this with most ornaments. Just remember to clean it at the same time as the fish tank as they too get covered in fish poo and will just dirty up the water if you don't give it a light scrub.

        It will enhance your tank

I bought the Column Ruins Aquarium ornament when I bought my new fish tank, I had already bough a small urn and another star fish ornament to disguise an air pump (previously reviewed) but wanted something a little larger as more of a focal point than the urn was, however I wanted something that would be in keeping with the appearance of the urn ornament I had bought. I spotted the Column Ruins ornament and it was perfect for what I wanted, and fitted in with the theme of our tank as well as providing an interesting environment for the fish, not sure it exactly went with the star fish but that was bought with a purpose and was something a little bit different to brighten the tank up. The Column Ruins ornament is basically 6 column ruins, 3 position horizontal to the other 3 creating a T shape. The columns have a Roman feel to them, they are mounted on a flat base along with a small stump of a broken column, a large pillar is positioned along the top of all 6 columns. Personally I thought this particular ornament was very detailed compared to some aquarium ornaments, the columns themselves have grooves going down them to give them a more realistic look, and the pillar across the top is decorated with a light blue flower pattern. Whilst this ornament is not huge, meaning it is suitable for slightly smaller aquariums, it does create a nice centre piece/ focal point for any tank, it measure at height 8.5cm, width 8cm and depth 4cm, I personally felt this was an ideal size for our tank along side the other items we had bought. The Column Ruins are made from the non toxic substance Polyresin, an extremely durable and hardwearing plastic type material, however it in no way makes the ornament appear cheap and tacky. The fact that it is made form polyresin means that it is suitable for all aquariums such as marine, tropical and fresh water. So far the columns ornament has show no signs of wear and tear and looks in just as good condition as the day we bought it, this was a slight worry of mine with the item constantly being in water and then being scrubbed when cleaning the tank out, but so far so good, we have had no problems with the ornament showing signs of wear. The column ornament was reasonably priced at £7.00, it was a bit more expensive compared to the other items we bought for the tank, however the plan was to have this as the centre piece so we were prepared to pay slightly more for it, I was also happy to pay a bit extra to ensure it was of a good quality and lasted well. We bought our ornament from our local fish and garden centre, how ever you can also buy the exact same item from various other fish stores as well as online. From what I have seen most places charge around about the same sort of price as what we paid. Overall I have been extremely happy with our column ruins ornament, it has provided a stimulating environment for our fish, the gaps between the columns gives them something to swim through and investigate, and so far they seem to love it. The ornament has been very hard wearing and of excellent quality, it really does bring all of the smaller items in the tank together creating an impressive display. I would definitely recommend this ornament for any tank.

A great looking fish tank ornament that the fish love darting in and out of.

We have a fairly large tropical fish tank set into one of our walls, and it's got an array of tank accessories and whatnots in it. Some of the ornaments have been chosen by the kids, so there are plenty of pirate themes objects in there, but one of my choices was the Blue Ribbon Column Ruins fish tank ornament. These can bought from Pets at Home stores for around £7, but I chose mine from a pile of tank ornaments my friend was giving away after her fish died (she wasn't very good at fish keeping), so our columns were free. I find history interesting, so I couldn't resist adding a bit of historical charm to the fish tank with these columns, designed to look like Roman or Greek ruins. The columns are made from polyresin, which means they are very tough, and completely safe for your fish. The base of the ornament is T-shaped and the columns rise around 8cm up from the base. As the widest point the whole ornament is about 8cm wide, so for a fish tank it's actually a decent size. Considering it was free I can't complain at all, as I do really like this ornament. The fish like it because there are lots of gaps for them to swim through and they enjoy darting between the columns, and I like it because of the detail that's gone into the columns, they look really authentic (as far as fish tank ornaments go) and they are very visually appealing to me. Everytime we clean the tank, we give the columns and the other ornaments a good scrub with a hard bristled brush, and although there are some areas at the top of the columns that are harder to clean, in general, cleaning of this ornament is easy and algae comes off easily with a quick scrub. This is probably my favourite ornament in the tank - all I have to do now is wait for the kids to grow up and leave home so I can replace some of their gaudier ornaments with more classical piece like this! Well recommended.

A wonderful piece that is the decorative focal point of my aquarium

I am not very much of a people person, I love animals and my pets are hugely important to me. I prefer the little cute fluffy pets, but my other half is a keen fish-keeper, and used to breed them as well. Since we moved in together he's introduced me to keeping fish as pets and I now have my very own fish tank! I have a Pets at Home store within only a 10 minute walk of my house, so this is usually my first choice for pet products. I chose to decorate my tank in a way that would be interesting to look at as well as fun for my fish to live in. This Column Ruins ornament can be bought from the Pets at Home stores, or online at www.petsathome.com at the price of £7.00. Pets at Home say: "Add a Roman touch to your aquarium with the Column Ruins Aquarium Ornament. Authentic detailing makes this ornament an excellent addition to your fish tank, and provides a stimulating environment for your fish. Made from a durable polyresin, this ornament is suitable for freshwater, tropical and marine aquariums." The aquarium set up I have is a simple hexagonal column tank, which has been set up to create the correct environment for keeping tropical fish. I have limited it to keeping a small number of fish, so they can get the most out of their space within the tank and I currently have a Siamese fighting fish and four little bandit corydoras (my Angel fish have moved into our main tank to allow more space). The base of my tank is covered in a layer of Pets at Home Aquarium Sand (also reviewed here: http://members.dooyoo.co.uk/pets-accessories/ pets-at-home-sand-mix-aquarium-gravel/1489672/) with a sprinkling of gravel over the top for variety. This provided a nice level and sturdy area for me to position any decorative items. The Column Ruins ornament is quite large and takes up a good deal of space within the aquarium. The measurements given on the packaging are H 8.5 x W 8 x D 4cm. The spacing between the columns allows the smaller fish to pass through the gaps if they fancy, and the 'T' shaped base ensures that there is plenty of room to manouevre around the edge of the ornament as well. The ornament is made from a polyresin material and is suitably hardwearing for use in a tropical tank. It has a beautiful and authentic looking aged effect applied to the detailing on the columns and it looks very much like stone even though it's only a resin model. The fine decorative detailing is very impressive, with fake cracks running around the curve of the columns, and chiseled edging around the top. It has the look of similar to ancient Greek or Roman architecture, and gives my tank that magical Atlantis feeling! It is fairly light weight considering the size, and weighs in at just 45g. It has still stayed securely in position within the tank and gives that extra bit of interest for the fish to interact with. It is important that fish have areas where they can go to hide away when they want to, and this provides good cover. My corydoras also love skimming along the top of it and resting on the columns. The quality and attention to detail here is remarkable and it is a stunning ornament that is the main feature in my fish tank (other than the fish of course!). It draws your attention and captures the eye, and with fake sea weeds planted around the edges of it, it still stands out as an imposing structure. This gives my aquarium just the look that I wanted and I was exceptionally pleased to find such a gorgeous and classic looking decoration for just £7.00. For it's scale and level of detail this is a great price, and I am very happy with how it looks in my tank. I would definitely recommend this decoration as it looks wonderful and is a simple way to build up a feature and create a scene within your fish tank. I think this looks lovely with my tropical fish, but it would also suit freshwater or marine tank set-ups as well. A great find that I am really happy with.
