WHAT IS IT?
A witches costume for Halloween for children between the ages of 4 and 6. When you buy it you'll get a dress and a hat, you do not get any accessories but all of the supermarkets sell things like witches brooms at the moment and Halloween accessories are very cheap to buy this year.
This costume has got a very good design with fitted body and flared layered skirt. The colours are good, because of it being a Halloween costume the main colour is black but colour is added through the green and red mesh of the skirt and part of the bodice has the same green and red colour scheme. The costume does up at the back with a long strip of velcro but the velcro is not very strong so it quite often comes undone when my daughter is playing, she wore it to school last week for a Halloween party and because this was going to be the last year that she wore it I decided to sew the back up while she was wearing it to stop it coming undone and embarrassing her in front of her friends. The costume is made of the same sort of thin material as most Halloween costumes but the black parts on the front of the bodice and the bottoms of the arms are a velvet material and that makes it look like it was more expensive than it was.
WHAT I THINK
I paid £15 for this witches outfit two years ago and my daughter has worn it enough times that it has been worth the money. It's comfortable for her to wear and not at all scratchy even on the seams, the seams have not been stitched very well I don't think and a lot of them are very long and raised up and even though this doesn't affect the look or style of the dress I think they could have done it better. I think the hat has been made well and sticks straight up on my daughters head without flopping down like a lot of witches hats do. It has been reinforced with a cardboard cone inside the hat that has been covered in the same material as the hat but you can still feel it. There are no rips or anything in the dress and even though my daughter has worn it from the age of four and she is now six it still fits her and has just got a bit shorter but it still looks good even though the frills of the skirt are now above her knee.
The skirt is my favourite part of this costume because the layers of black, green and red mesh overlap each other and that gives it a bit of a shimmery affect to turn my daughter into a cute witch instead of a wicked one. It also sticks out and makes the dress a lot more pretty than the witches costume I bought in Wilkinsons last week that just hangs straight down and is very boring compared to this one.
This year my daughter is going to be wearing her witches costume for the last time and I have bought her some striped green and red tights to go underneath it and she still has got last years broom so she used that to complete the outfit. It's a pity the velcro has failed and I have had to sew the back closed because apart from this the dress is still in very good condition and could have been passed along to someone else for next year. I painted part of her face green this year and the face paint has stained the red part of the dress on one of the sleeves, I can't remove it and because of the dress not being suitable for putting in the washing machine I had to do the best I could with soap and water in the sink.
