My eldest son has been asking me for quite some time to buy him a batman costume to play dress up in. There was a suit at his school when he was in the foundation unit that he dressed up in every day, so when he moved up into year one, one of the things he has missed most is this costume, so I decided to get him his own version.
There are many different costumes to choose from. There are black ones, blue ones, grey ones. I decided to go for this version by Rubies as we have bought a couple of other costumes by this company, so I knew that it should be well made and designed for robust play.
This suit is available in 3 size options - age 3-5, 5-7, 0r 8-10. I was a little unsure what size to get for my son as he is only just 6, but he is a very tall child for his age, so he has recently outgrown some of his Ben 10 costumes in age 5-7. However, 8-10 seemed as though it would be too big, so I did in the end go for 5-7 as reviews on amazon suggested others had found this suit a big fit. I agree fully with this opinion.
This was a good choice as this is the perfect length for his frame, which is around 126cm.
It is a little long but not enough to trip him up. The bagginess seems to sit in the suit, and the boots are fabric which sits over his feet. However, the all in one jumpsuit has a chest plate for the muscular frame of batman, and this is quite a hard piece which is too big for his frame and it seems to be pushed up while he is playing so it is sat under his chin rather than on his chest, and he finds it a bit uncomfortable to wear at the moment for long periods, particularly if he is sat or crouched down. It is less of a problem when he is stood up.
The cape is a thin piece of fabric which fastens with velcro around his neck. I am not fond of things being tied around my children's necks while they are playing, but if this caught on something it would come undone straight away. There is then a head piece which covers the hair, forehead and eyes, and fastens with velcro under the chin. These items are both a good fit for his size. The last piece to the costume is a yellow utility belt that fastens by tying at the back of the costume. My son is not that impressed by this bit, as he can't tie it on himself independently, and also, it is a bit pointless. If it had bits on the utility belt that you were storing there till you needed them, then it might seem more useful to him.
This costume does look brilliant, and is well made, but it is huge even on big children. My youngest son is as big as most of the 5-6 year olds in his brothers class, and is about 120cm, but when he tried this on he had around 2 foot of extra material flapping round his legs and causing him the risk of falling over. He is disappointed I won't let him wear this.
I also have to mark it down a little for not being that comfy to wear, but it is still a lot of fun for boys to dress as a superhero and my son still loves having his own batman dress up.
Like most dress up costumes, this shouldn't be washed in a machine, only sponge washed. I do risk handwashing some dressing up items, but with this I don't think I would dare too as it would spoil the padded chest plate and the fake muscles in the arms which seem to be stuffed like toys are. I think if the sizing information was better with this costume and we got the size right for the child, I would rate this more highly, but I would still give it a very respectable 4 stars.
I bought mine from amazon, paying £14.71 for it in age 5-7. This is a fair price for the quality of the costume. The company were very prompt to despatch this item, and it was well packaged. I do recommend the costume, but only if you buy it in an appropriate size for the recipient.
