I was really disappointed with this product. Finding a good Fireman Sam outfit is difficult and I was really pleased when I spotted this for sale. I checked the reviews, which were mainly poor, but with no alternative, I went ahead with the purchase anyway. Bad move. The quality is so poor that the flimsy, shiny plastic jacket lasted less than a week before tearing at the plastic seam. The torch is designed so badly that it turns itself on/off every time it is put in the belt and the head fell of the axe after very little play. The walkie talkie is hollow plastic and does nothing. Most other Fireman Sam toys at least make a sound. The belt is a good idea, but too big for my 3 year old and doesn't stay done up. It has a flimsy plastic clasp with just a hole to fix it together. After endlessly having to do it back up for my son, we had to make a new hole and then fix with a clip. This is an extremely disappointing product and I would not recommend it to anyone.
My son is a big Fireman Sam fan and although he loved this costume I was disappointed.
We paid £14.99 for this but as always it is best to shop around and I wouldn't be surprised if this didn't end up in the sale at some point. If it had been my choice we wouldn't have purchased it but my son had money from his Nanna to choose something as a treat.
The costume is a plastic waistcoat that does up with clips on the front. The clips are very difficult to use for a little child which my son finds very frustrating as he loves being independent. Already under the arms it has torn slightly. The belt that comes with the outfit is easily done up but constantly loosened.
Due to the costume being made of plastic it is very easy to wipe clean so any chocolate spillages are not going to ruin it. The material reminds me of an art apron that I used to wear when I was little at school. The costume is also red when Sam wears blue but this didn't seem to bother my son!
My little boy loved that the costume had accessories just like Sam! It comes with a plastic axe which seems very sturdy. There is a plastic walkie-talkie which is just for pretend, my son is constantly on the walkie-talkie talking to others about the trouble Norman has got himself into! My son loved the little torch that it came with as it is a working torch. It takes two AA batteries which are not supplied. Word of warning though my son managed to get the batteries out luckily he is five and knows not to put them in his mouth. All of the accessories clip onto the belt so that they can be Fireman Sam ready for any emergancy especially if Norman Price is about!
The costume doesn't come with trousers or a helmet which would have been nice. My son would have loved a button on the belt to press for a siren. As I said earler my son who is a true Sam fan loves it but I just feel that not much thought has gone into the design of this costume.
A few years ago my son was mad on anything to do with fireman Sam. One of the toys he owned at that time was the Fireman Sam Utility Belt with Jacket and accessories.
My son was bought this toy as a present for Christmas so I have no idea how much was paid for it but looking online now (Nov 2012) it is priced between £12 and around £20.
The set includes a plastic jacket that is red with yellow detailing on it, a black plastic belt with red plastic buckle and holders, a plastic axe, torch and walkie talkie.
If I remember rightly the jacket simply goes on like a coat and does up at the front with Velcro although I think this has changed to clips now.. The belt has a buckle that fits into holes on the other end. The holders simply slide onto the belt and can be easily removed. Each accessory fits into a holder and can be removed for play.
The torch works and needs 2 x AA batteries; these are not included but are simple enough to fit. The torch cannot be securely closed and simply unscrews so it is very easy for your child to take it apart. My son did this within minutes and managed to lose part of the inside of the torch and we never got it to work again.
The walkie talkie is simply a piece of yellow plastic and apart from looking like a radio it doesn't actually do anything.
The axe is made of two parts; both are plastic, which slot together. Unfortunately the blade part does come off quite a bit and once it has been taken off a few times it is hard to make it stay on. I don't know if my son was just too boisterous for this toy but it was forever in bits.
My son also received the talking fireman Sam helmet as part of his gift which you obviously need to complete the outfit and I notice online that you can buy the complete set for around £30.
My son did play with this toy quite a bit but found it frustrating because the end fell off the axe or the bits wouldn't stay on the belt. The jacket didn't last very long and split up the seam after a few months.
I think the toy would be better if the torch didn't work but the walkie talkie said a few well known firemen Sam phrases. This would probably double the price though.
I think if your child likes fireman Sam then this would be a good toy to own but it isn't the most exciting toy around. I would recommend shopping around to find a bargain because this isn't worth £20.
