Both of my girls went through a massive Toy Story faze after the release of the third film. We did have the first and second films on DVD but when I took them to the cinema to see Toy Story 3, their love of it just seemed to increase and we were soon writing lists to santa for all things Toy Story.
Before we knew it, our house was literally inundated with Toy Story stuff, and a few items seem to bring endless amounts of fun for them. They loved the Lotso Hugging Bear (mainly because he smells of strawberries), and they loved Mr Potato Head (who doesn't), but their favourite, and still an item that gets used today, is the Jessie Cowgirl dressing up outfit.
I say it still gets used today, and I mean this quite literally. I told my youngest to get dressed ths morning and she came down wearing said dressing up costume which has prompted me to write the review!
The Disney Store is a regular stop in our house and when we saw the Jessie dressing up outfit we had to buy it. It wasn't cheap at £25 but it has given the girls so much fun and they have worn it to endless children's parties.
With the dressing up outfit you get a red cowgirl hat with a red plaited pony tail which is detachable. The silky top has lovely detailing on it and the trousers with the elasticated waist are ideal for growing children and means you will get longer use out of it. The top is fastened by Velcro pieces around the back, much like usual dressing up outfits.
The one thing I will mention about the outfit is the hat. Although it is very authentic with the red long plait, it is quite heavy, especially for little ones and my two girls when wearing it, often found that it tipped back under the weight, so would often result in them detaching the plait (which is secured with Velcro) once they had arrived at parties and other children had seen them in it. The foam hat is red and sparkly and the girls particular loved this part of the outfit despite the weight issue.
They do look very authentic dressed as Jessie, but there isn't any kind of accessory you can add to it that heightens the dressing up experience. For example, we have just bought the Merida outfit and were able to buy the bow and arrow to go with it, but as Jessie only really has her horse Bullseye as an accessory (and he is obviously way too big) there isn't really anything you can add to it. The gold cowboy boots are I suppose an extra that you can buy, but apart from improve the look of the outfit, they don't heighten the playing experience.
The sizes started at 3-4 and I seem to recall they went up to around 7-8. I'm actually not sure these are available to buy in the Disney Store anymore, after a quick search online didn't bring anything up. This is a shame as Toy Story will no doubt become a timeless film that children will always enjoy and it is nice to have toys for the films they love so much.
The quality is excellent and it has lasted and lasted, despite a lot of use by my two girls. It washes well too.
I bought my daughter the toy story Jessie dressing up costume last year after we had got tickets to go and see Disney on ice, my cousin enlightened me that all the children tend to dress up as their favorite Disney characters so off I went to find a costume that my daughter liked. Im so glad I did as all the children were indeed dressed up. We visited the Disney store and my daughter chose the Jessie costume straight away.
The costume consists of a foam red cow girl hat that had a detachable red pony tail that goes down the back, a satin top with tassles that fastened at the back and a pair of trousers that are elasticated waisted. The costume definitely looked the part so I purchased it for £25.00. My daughter was over the moon and couldn't wait to try the costume on.
The hat proved to be very difficult as the pony tail is rather heavy resulting in the hat tipping backwards all of the time unless you hold it. In the end we had to pull the hair over the front of her shoulder to try and even it out and it did help a bit but it didn't stop it falling off every so often. The rest of the costume was great and she looked fab when she was a dressed up.
We still have the costume now and it still gets worn and washed a lot and I have to admit that the costume still looks excellent and has retained its shape and colour . This is a pefect costume for a little girl who loves toy story and I would definitely recommend.
With all the TS3 hype at the moment, I was really surprised to find how difficult it was to get hold of a Jessie cowgirl costume in child's sizes. The adult version seems to be available absolutely everywhere, but this is no good if you have a moaning 7 year old daughter! I would have expected M and S or Asda to sell them, as they do sell the Buzz and Woody costumes, but alas, no joy here. In the end, there were only 2 stores selling them: Amazon and Disney store, and even then, the biggest size is 7-8.
Unfortunately for me, my daughter is really tall, and most of her clothes are age 9-10. I told her that there was no way the costume would fit her, and I was not going to buy one online and have to send it back, but on a recent trip to the Disney store, I tried the costume next to her, and it seemed quite a generous fit, so we bought it.
The costume itself is absolutely gorgeous and very high quality. It cost £20 from the Disney Store, which is quite pricey, as I remember buying a Belle dress a few years ago for £15. The costume comes in 3 parts: A hat, a top and trousers. I was really glad that this was not an all in one, like some costumes, as I really don't think it would have fit at all.
So let's start with the hat! Any little girl would love the hat in it's own right. It is really prety. It is made from soft foamy plastic and covered with red glitter, which stays on pretty well compared to other glittery hats you can buy. The hat has a white stitch detail around the edge, so looks exactly like the hat in the film. At the back of the hat is a long ginger fake hair plait, which it attatched by velcro so it can be removed easily. I would have expected the plait to be made of wool or yarn, to make it more toy-like, but this does look really good. My daughter has long hair and likes me to plait her hair to the fake hair. This helps keep the hat on, as it is a bit small for her head, and has no elatic to hold it in place. I am considering attatching a piece of elastic or some white shoelaces that she can tie underneath like a proper cowgirl.
Now for the top, which has lovely detail. It just about fits my daughter, but would fit most children just fine. The top is made from shiny white satin material, with yellow satin details and cuffs. The yelow satin pieces are embroidered with red thread and the cuffs have glitter ribbon edging, as does the collar. The front of the top has a line of red sequins and a red tassel fringe along the chest. There are two large pearlised buttons on the front of the top and a fake belt, which is in a mock suede fabric, with a metallic soft buckle. The top fastens at the back with three pieces of velcro which fasten from the middle of the back up to the neck. The top is washable at 40 degrees.
The trousers are made from navy blue polyester, and have an elasticated waist. Furry "cowskin" chaps are sewn into the front of each trouser leg, edged in red satin ribbon, and red tassels go down the side of each leg. The trousers are a good generous size and flare out nicely at the bottom. Unlike the Woody costume, these trousers do not have boots sewn onto the bottom of the trouser legs, although matching boots are available to buy instore. The trousers are surface clean only, because of the furry material at the front, but If I needed to, I would gently handwash them in a mild detergent.
My daughter vitually lives in her Jessie outfit, dancing around the house pretending to be a cowgirl. This costume has certainly had more wear that the princess dresses she had a few years ago, so I would not hesitate to recommend this product with a full 5 stars, although I do wish they went up to an age 9 size.
